Photodissociation of N-Arylmethylanilines: A Laser Flash Photolysis, Fluorescence, and Product Analysis Study(1).

Increased phenylation in the molecular series PhCH(2)NHPh (1), Ph(2)CHNHPh (2), and Ph(3)CNHPh(3) has two important consequences on the photophysical/photochemical behavior: (i) decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields (cyclohexane), Phi(f) = 0.115, 0.063, 0.001 (lambda(exc) = 254 nm) and 0.164, 0.089, 0.019 (lambda(exc) = 290 nm), respectively, and (ii) increase in the quantum yield (MeCN) of the photodissociation products PhCH(2)(*), Ph(2)CH(*), and Ph(3)C(*), Phi(radical) = 0.16, 0.25, 0.65 (lambda(exc) = 248 nm) and (not measured), 0.18, 0.29 (lambda(exc) = 308 nm), respectively. As the C-N bond progressively weakens in the series 1, 2, 3 (bond dissociation enthalpy: 52, 48, 39 kcal/mol, respectively), the C-N fission channel becomes obviously more favorable and competes effectively with fluorescence. The involved intermediates PhCH(2)(*), Ph(2)CH(*), Ph(3)C(*), and PhNH(*) were identified using laser flash photolysis (248 and 308 nm). Product analysis (lamp irradiation) gives as main products aniline and (i) 1,1-diphenylethane and o- and p-benzylaniline for 1, (ii) 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane for 2, (iii) Ph(3)CH and 9-Ph-fluorene for 3; all these compounds are formed from the above radicals through coupling or H-abstraction reactions.

New synthetic approaches to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their carcinogenic oxidized metabolites: derivatives of benzo[s]picene, benzo[rst]pentaphene, and dibenzo[b,def]chrysene.

A new synthetic approach to polycyclic aromatic compounds is described that entails in the key steps double Suzuki coupling of PAH bisboronic acid derivatives with o-bromoaryl aldehydes to furnish aryl dialdehydes that are converted to larger polycyclic aromatic ring systems by either (a) conversion to diolefins by Wittig reaction followed by photocyclization or (b) reductive cyclization with triflic acid and 1,3-propanediol. This synthetic method provides convenient access to as many as three different polycyclic aromatic ring systems from a single Suzuki coupled intermediate. It was utilized to synthesize substituted derivatives of benzo[s]picene, benzo[rst]pentaphene, dibenzo[b,def]chrysene, and 13,14-dihydro-benz[g]indeno[2,1-a]fluorene, as well as the putative carcinogenic bisdihydrodiol metabolites of benzo[s]picene, benzo[rst]pentaphene, and dibenzo[b,def]chrysene.

Assembling and orientation of polyfluorenes in solution controlled by a focused near-infrared laser beam.

Ordered fibril- and particle-like assemblies of poly(2,7-(9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene)) can be formed by photon force of a focused near-infrared laser beam during the drying process of its tetrahydrofuran solution on a glass substrate. These formations have been achieved controllably by combining laser irradiation with convection in the cast solution; that is, when viscous drag of the solution in the convection is stronger than the photon force, the fibril-like assemblies can be formed. Molecular orientation in the assemblies differs from that in self-assembled fibril-like structures, and maybe it can be controlled by the polarization direction of the focused laser beam. We have demonstrated that the length and width of the assemblies can be controlled by the irradiation time, the laser power, the concentration of the solution, and the convection rate in the solution. On the other hand, when the viscous drag of the solution in the convection is weak compared to the photon force, particle-like assemblies in which molecular orientation is controlled by polarization direction are formed.

Rod-coil block copolymers incorporating terfluorene segments for stable blue light emission.

Spectroscopic studies on a series of rod-coil block copolymers with terfluorene as the rigid segment demonstrate that the main cause of color instability in fluorene oligomers and polymers is aggregate and/or excimer formation and not the presence alone of keto defects (fluorenone formation) along the molecular chain. Keto defects, when present, contribute to the appearance of the undesirable "green" emission band but are not the leading cause of color instability. Thus, the synthesis of materials where aggregation and/or interchain, intersegment interactions are inhibited is the key approach for the production of stable polymeric light-emitting devices (PLED's). The potential of this method is verified by the synthesis of photooxidative stable fluorene/styrene diblock copolymer blue emitters.

Highly fluorescent N,N-dimethylaminophenylethynylarenes: synthesis, photophysical properties, and electrochemiluminescence.

A new family of aryl-pi-donor-aryl molecules has been synthesized and studied with respect to their photophysical properties and electrogenerated chemiluminscence (ECL) for the first time. Anthracene, phenanthrene, naphthalene, biphenyl, and fluorene were coupled with N,N-dimethylanilino moiety via a C-C triple bond (1-7). Introduction of such a strong electron-donating moiety as N,N-dimethylanilino group through a triple bond imparts new properties to the resultant molecules that are not commonly observed for the parent arenes. All molecules show absorption in the near-visible region and emission totally in the visible region with high fluorescence quantum yields. Bright solid-state photoluminescence has also been noticed for all the compounds in the visible region. 9-Anthryl- and 1-naphthyl- derivatives exhibited blue-shifted electrochemiluminescence (ECL) relative to their photoluminescence because of aggregation. 9-Phenanthryl- and 2-naphthyl- derivatives did not show ECL. 2-Biphenyl derivative showed monomeric ECL while 4-biphenyl counterpart exhibited excimer ECL. No ECL was observed for 2-fluorenyl derivative. The observed electronic properties are discussed with regard to the structure of the molecules. The characteristics of the molecules chosen in the present study open up new prospects and promises for novel tunable organic materials, on the basis of simple extension of conjugation to promote intramolecular communication, for ECL, OLED, and other optoelectronic applications.

Zinc(II)-induced color-tunable fluorescence emission in the pi-conjugated polymers composed of the bipyridine unit: a way to get white-light emission.

A series of fluorene and bipyridine (bpy) copolymers were synthesized, and their optical properties were investigated in the presence of zinc(II). By adjusting the bpy content in the polymer backbone, the emitting color of the polymer solution could be tuned from initial blue to green to white and violet when it interacted with zinc(II) ions. The counteranions of zinc(II) ions were also found to influence the optical properties of copolymers greatly.

Strong effects of molecular structure on electron transport in carbon/molecule/copper electronic junctions.

Carbon/molecule/copper molecular electronic junctions were fabricated by metal deposition of copper onto films of various thicknesses of fluorene (FL), biphenyl (BP), and nitrobiphenyl (NBP) covalently bonded to flat, graphitic carbon. A "crossed-wire" junction configuration provided high device yield and good junction reproducibility. Current/voltage characteristics were investigated for 69 junctions with various molecular structures and thicknesses and at several temperatures. The current/voltage curves for all cases studied were nearly symmetric, scan rate independent, repeatable at least thousands of cycles and exhibited negligible hysteresis. Junction conductance was strongly dependent on the dihedral angle between phenyl rings and on the nature of the molecule/copper "contact". Junctions made with NBP showed a decrease in conductivity of a factor of 1300 when the molecular layer thickness increased from 1.6 to 4.5 nm. The slope of ln(i) vs layer thickness for both BP and NBP was weakly dependent on applied voltage and ranged from 0.16 to 0.24 A(-1). These attenuation factors are similar to those observed for similar molecular layers on modified electrodes used to study electrochemical kinetics. All junctions studied showed weak temperature dependence in the range of approximately 325 to 214 K, implying activation barriers in the range of 0.06 to 0.15 eV. The carbon/molecule/copper junction structure provides a robust, reproducible platform for investigations of the dependence of electron transport in molecular junctions on both molecular structure and temperature. Furthermore, the results indicate that junction conductance is a strong function of molecular structure, rather than some artifact resulting from junction fabrication.

Green emission from end-group-enhanced aggregation in polydioctylfluorene.

Green emission in polyfluorenes (PFs) has been attributed to aggregation or excimer emission, but recently it was reassigned as an on-chain fluorenone defect. We show here that, in dialkyl-substituted PFs that is hydrogen-free at the 9'-position of the fluorene, blue emission with very weak green emission is observed from end-capped polydioctylfluorene (PFO) for both photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra, while the low-energy green emission at 507 nm is very pronounced only in uncapped PFO (PFOun). The facts that there is no detectable infrared absorption at around 1721 cm(-1) due to >C=O stretching vibration in PFOun and no charge-trapping occurring in the light-emitting device from PFOun are in contrast with those found in the literature-reported copolymers with fluorenone units, which have detectable infrared absorption at 1721 cm(-1) and charge-trapping in devices. We found that this green emission at around 507 nm originates from the end-group-enhanced aggregation by use of UV-vis absorption, photoexcitation spectra, and steady-state photoluminescent and electroluminescent spectra. The end-group-enhanced aggregation is much weaker in other PFs with less-ordered structures.

Charge transport in luminescent polymers studied by in situ fluorescence spectroscopy.

Modulation of the photoluminescence of poly-[2,7-(fluorene)-1,4-(phenylene)] can be attained by reversible electrochemical modification of the conjugated chain (p- or n-doping). Controlled injection of charge quenches the fluorescent emission of the conjugated polymer. The injection of holes completely eliminates the emission, while the electrons only quench up to one-third of the initial fluorescence of the polymer. Analogous quenching effects have been previously reported for solid-state organoelectronic devices. Electrochemical Stern-Volmer plots permit the estimation of the relative mobility of charge carriers in the polymer layer. The mobility of holes is 1 order of magnitude higher that the mobility of electrons, as determined by this method.

Study on the formation of the ketonic defects in the thermal degradation of ladder-type poly(p-phenylenes) by vibrational spectroscopy.

We have investigated the thermal degradation in air by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of a ladder-type copolymer containing fluorene units in the backbone (Me-LPF), to reveal the formation of the ketonic defects. As thermal treatment of Me-LPF film at 200 degrees C in air proceeds, a new group of complex absorption bands due to degradation products arises in the range between 1800 and 1600 cm(-1). The observed overlapping bands were separated and assigned by utilizing the second-derivative IR spectral analysis, which can narrow the peak width to one-third of the originals and thereby eases the analysis. The degraded products were assigned as fluorenone (1718 cm(-1)) and benzophenone (Ar-(C=O)-Ar) (1665 cm(-1)), formed by the oxidation of the backbone, and acylphenone (Ar-(C=O)-R) (1685 cm(-1)) from the side chain. The fluorenone was found to be the major component among the degraded products in the main chain, and the time and temperature dependence indicated that the oxidation is a kind of autocatalytic radical-chain process. The oxidation can reach a very high degree (approximately 30% for 6 h oxidation at 240 degrees C estimated by absorption of the alkyl). Our results suggest the possibility of the oxidation of the 9-bialkylfluorene sites. We propose that the degradation of the alkyl in the side chain can help the radicals to propagate in the chain reaction.

Free electron transfer from xanthenyl- and fluorenylsilanes (Me3 or Ph3) to parent solvent radical cations: effects of molecule dynamics.

Parent radical cations of nonpolar solvents (alkanes and alkyl chlorides) ionize 9-(trimethylsilyl)xanthenes and 9-(trimethylsilyl)fluorenes in a diffusion-controlled electron transfer. The actual electron jump as the deciding part of the process does not require a defined encounter complex, and therefore the reactants are not subjected to any geometry optimization. Considering the molecule dynamics of the donors, bending motions of the silyl group are concerted with fluctuations of the highest occupied molecular orbital electrons. Ionizing such a standing conformer mixture creates metastable (microsecond) as well as dissociative donor radical cations. A mobility restriction of the benzylic silane group in positions vertical to the phenyl plane stabilizes the radical cations and accounts for a declining amount of dissociative radical cations, which undergo C-Si bond fragmentation in the order benzylsilane > xanthenylsilane > fluorenylsilane.

Theoretical study on the optoelectronic properties of electron-withdrawing substituted diethynylfluorenyl gold(I) complexes.

We report on a quantum-chemical study of the electronic and optical properties of gold(I) complex AuTFT (1) and its electron-withdrawing substitutents, AuTFOT (2) and AuTFCNT (3) [where TFT = diethynylfluorenyl, TFOT = diethynylfluorenone and TFCNT = diethynyl-(9-(dicyanomethylene)fluorene)]. Our theoretical calculations indicate that for all systems the reorganization energies of electron and hole are in the same order of magnitude and similar to those of the well-known electrontransport material Alq3. The substitution of -CO and -C(CN)2 for -CH in AuTFT significantly decreases the bond length alternation and increases the electron affinity, which would effectively lower the energy barrier for electron injection from cathode and thus qualify AuTFOT (2) and AuTFCNT (3) as candidates for the electron transport layer (ETL) in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The lowest lying excited-states of gold(I) diethynylfluorenyl derivatives have been studied by the singles configuration interaction (CIS) method and time-dependent density functional method (TDDFT). It is found that the electron-withdrawing substitutions evidently decrease the energy gap, leading to a remarkable red shift in transition energy and transformation in the direction of charge transfer. Our research is important in the development of new functional materials for the design of LEDs with enhanced performance.

Surface modification of indium tin oxide via electrochemical reduction of aryldiazonium cations.

The facile deposition of para-substituted aryl films onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes by the electrochemical reduction of aryl diazonium salts in acetonitrile is reported. For the deposition conditions used in this report, the aryl film thicknesses are on the order of 1-6 nm, suggesting a multilayer structure. Regardless of the functional group on the aryl diazonium cation, (NO(2), CO(2)H, or fluorene) the electrodeposition behavior onto ITO electrodes is similar to that seen on other electrode materials. XPS and UV-vis data support the introduction of organic functional surface groups to ITO. The blocking behavior of the aryl films on ITO toward the Ru(NH(3))(6)(3+/2+) redox couple is in agreement with electron transfer through conjugated organic layers. The facile preparation of patterned aryl films with regular-spaced 700 nm voids on ITO is also described. Atomic force microscopy and scanning surface potential microscopy on patterned NO(2) aryl films are used to assess the molecular structure and orientation. A 100 mV decrease in the contact potential over NO(2) aryl films relative to bare ITO suggests that the aryl films are loosely structured as deposited with the NO(2) groups oriented at a small angle away from the ITO surface.

Dynamic NMR studies of a potential chiroptical switch based on dithiocarbamate-iminodithiolane interconversion.

[reaction: see text]. Variable temperature NMR spectra of the chiral spiro[(4-N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamato)-(2-N,N-dimethylimino)-1,3-dithiolane-5,9'-xanthene] show complex dynamics including degenerate interconversion of the dithiocarbamate and iminodithiolane groups. The rate of this switching process can be controlled by chemical modification: the analogous spiro[dithiolane-fluorene] derivative shows no interconversion. These novel materials have potential application as molecular switching elements in information storage devices.

Cycloaddition reactions of alkoxy alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes with o-quinodimethanes (oQDMs).

[reaction: see text] The reaction of o-quinodimethanes (oQDMs) with alkoxy alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes is highly dependent on the carbene complex. Thus, for arylalkynyl carbene complexes, the initial [4 + 2]-cycloadduct evolves opening a new entry to the benzo[b]fluorene skeleton, which is present in many natural products. However, for alkenylalkynyl carbene complexes, the reaction takes place through the double bond, instead of the triple bond, in an unprecedented fashion, leading to new functionalized alkynyl carbene complexes.

Synthesis of cationic water-soluble light-harvesting dendrimers.

Four generations of phenylenefluorene (1F)- and phenylenebis(fluorene) (2F)-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were synthesized by coupling activated esters with commercially available PAMAM precursors. Treatment of Boc-terminated pendant groups on the optically active units with 3 M HCl in dioxane yields cationic water-soluble dendrimers. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments with the cationic dendrimers as the donor and double stranded DNA containing a fluorescein label as the acceptor reveal cooperative optical behavior.

pi-Conjugated twin molecules based on truxene: synthesis and optical properties.

[structure: see text] A series of novel extended pi-conjugated twin molecules based on 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-alpha;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) have been prepared via Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki coupling, Sonogashira coupling, and McMurry reactions, respectively. 9,9'-Spirobifluorenylene, ethynylene, and vinylene groups as the bridge are introduced to connect both truxene moieties to understand the effect of the large steric chromophores on the properties of the desired materials. The investigation of optical properties of TM1-3 by UV-vis and photoluminescent spectroscopy demonstrates that the optical properties of the twin molecules are strongly affected by the pi-linkages.
