[Impacts of forest and precipitation on runoff and sediment in Tianshui watershed and GM models].

This paper analyzed the impacts of foret stand volume and precipitation on annual erosion modulus, mean sediment, maximum sediment, mean runoff, maximum runoff, minimum runoff, mean water level, maximum water level and minimum water level in Tianshui watershed, and also analyzed the effect of the variation of forest stand volume on monthly mean runoff, minimum runoff and mean water level. The dynamic models of grey system GM(1, N) were constructed to simulate the changes of these hydrological elements. The dynamic GM models on the impact of stand volumes of different forest types(Chinese fir, masson pine and broad-leaved forests) with different age classes(young, middle-aged, mature and over-mature) and that of precipitation on the hydrological elements were also constructed, and their changes with time were analyzed.

[Serum leptin levels in normal pregnant women and their babies].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate serum leptin levels in normal pregnant women and their babies. METHODS: Immunoradioassay was used to measure the serum levels of leptin in 10 non-pregnant women, 63 pregnant women (31 in the firs, 10 in the second, and 22 in the third trimester), 27 women at delivery, 18 women in the first week after delivery and in 18 newborns' cord serum. Serum leptin levels were correlated with body weight, body mass index (BMI), fasting insulin levels and lipids. RESULTS: Serum insulin, cholesterol, triglyceride were increased since the second trimester during pregnancy. One week after delivery serum insulin but not cholesterol and triglicetride level was decreased to the levels of non-pregnancy. Serum leptin levels were (7.98 +/- 4.42) micrograms/L in non-pregnant women and (7.03 +/- 3.42) micrograms/L in the first trimester. Then the levels were increased to (13.97 +/- 8.03) micrograms/L in second trimester and (14.86 +/- 6.25) micrograms/L in the third trimester, (19.89 +/- 9.66) micrograms/L at the delivery time and returned to (10.86 +/- 9.18) micrograms/L in the first week after delivery, respectively. Cord serum leptin levels of newborns were (8.93 +/- 6.95) micrograms/L. Serum leptin levels in pregnant women were positively correlated with their body weight, BMI, fasting serum insulin and glycerol levels. Cord serum leptin levels was positively correlated with newborn birth weights as well as their insulin levels. CONCLUSIONS: (1) Serum leptin levels increase in the second and third trimester, and may contribute to the inhibition of increased food intake, body weight and body fat. (2) Newborn serum leptin may come from themselves, and the levels were lower than those in their mothers. (3) Birth weight, possibly adiposity, as well as serum insulin positively regulates serum leptin levels in neonates as in adults.

[Fixation of the vagina and neovagina with the sacrospinal ligament].

In order to fix the prolapse of vaginal vault after vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy we use the technique of transvaginal sacrospinous colpopexy. The authors used this technique for the firs time when they have made neovagina at male transsexual. The technique is as follows: after making the tunnel between the bladder and recrum, under the control of the left hand fingers the vagina, or neovagina is fixed to sacrospinous ligament. No complications or recidive followed the operation ever. The authors point out that the skillfull surgeon should know very well the anatomy of both male or female pelvis in order to perform this operation.

Rash orientation in pityriasis rosea: a qualitative study.

Rash orientation in pityriasis rosea (PR) has been described as Christmas-tree pattern, inverted Christmas-tree pattern, fir tree pattern, parallel to the ribs or along skin cleavage lines. We retrieved clinical photographs of 11 patients diagnosed as having PR over a two-year period for qualitative study of rash orientation. We found that Langer's cleavage lines are the most appropriate description. All three components of these lines on the trunk, i.e. V-shaped pattern on upper chest and upper back, circumferential pattern around the shoulders and hips, and transverse pattern on the lower anterior trunk and lower back, are demonstrated by most patients. We believe with the present state of knowledge, the mechanism for PR following Langer's lines is best considered unknown. We advocate abandoning other descriptions which might cause confusion to students and trainee physicians.

[Differences in the mechanisms of low-temperature and high-temperature processes in the formation of 3,4-benzopyrene during wood pyrolysis].

In 4 series of experiments a dependence between 3,4-benzpyrene (BP) output and the temperature of fir sawdust pyrolysis under isothermic conditions has been investigated. The experimental series differed in the duration of wood pulp particles stay in the reaction zone (tau). Also EPR spectra of pyrolysis products have been recorded. The experimental series did not differ in an output of ether extract from pyrolysis products, while BP output temperature curves in their shape were found to be largely dependent on tau: with an increased tau these curves definitely showed the maximum in the range of 300-350 degrees C and the BP output raised in the range of this maximum and also at the temperature of 600 degrees C. In the temperature range over 350 degrees C the character of dependence of the EPR signal value on temperature would correlate well with the temperature-dependent BP output, in the range of lower temperatures the EPR signal was not detected. The data obtained are considered as an evidence of two processes of BP formation in wood pyrolysis-a high-temperature process (temperature over 500 degrees C) and low-temperature one (300-350 degrees C). The high-temperature process seems to have the free-radical mechanism of BP formation, whereas in low temperatures it is evidently the result of a ion type reaction.

[Study on the distribution of erythrocyte population during blood preservation: correlation of the distribution after donating blood].

The aimes of paper attempts to answer following questions: 1. does distribution curve of the blood, that has been preserved for different time intervals, indicated the yeald of conservation, and 2. is there any difference in type of the RBC size distribution between donors who underwent multiple withdrawals and those undergoing single withdrowal. Our results confirms the already known choice in favor of ACD or CPD with Adenin added, this time the choice being supported by the RBC size distribution. Physiological reaction in donors organizm as estimated from RBC size distribution curves suggested that subjects undergoing blood withrowlas for the firs time react in a different fashion that those who are adapted.

[Pelvic inflammatory disease-- microbial findings].

During the period 1997-2001 in the Microbiological laboratory of University Hospital "Maichin don" 20 women with clinical diagnoses of obs. kysta ovarii, 3 with obs. grav. extrauterina, 9 with pyosalpinx, 37 with TOA, 14 women with pelveoperitonitis were examined. The microbial findings of examined aspirates from CD and materials taken by means of surgical intervention have been presented. The importance of the evaluation of direct microscopical preparation (dmp) from the materials examined fir any existing inflammatory process has been clearly defined. In 14 of the cases (19.1%) in the presence of lot of Leuc in dmp the examined purulent collections didn't show evidence of growth of microorganisms. In the age group 16-25 in 4 of the examined 29 women with acute PID there has been found a positive culture of N. gonorrhoeae. The highest percentage as the cause of TOA and pelveoperitonitis has been attributed to association of microorganisms with anaerobic species having the leading part.

[IgG subclasses intrathecal synthesis patterns in eosinophilic meningoencephalitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis].

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing interest to know the characteristics of meningoencephalitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis because of it is an emergent disease. OBJECTIVE: To describe the intrathecal synthesis pattern of IgG subclasses in pediatric patients suffering from eosinophilic meningoencephalitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten pediatric patients with the disease were studied. During the firs diagnostic lumbar puncture an eosinophilic pleocitosis was found. Simultaneously a serum sample was taken. Eight days later, a second lumbar and venous puncture was performed. To every serum and cerebrospinal fluid sample IgA, IgM, IgG, albumin and the four subclasses of IgG were quantified by immunodiffusion and a differential cell count. RESULTS: During the first diagnostic lumbar puncture, all the cases had blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction with absence of immunoglobulins intrathecal synthesis with a mean of 450 106cells/L and 48% of eosinophils average. In the second lumbar punction there was a 40% patients with dysfunction of the blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier and with a synthesis pattern IgA+IgM+IgG in the 50% o patients and with IgA+IgG in four patients. The synthesis pattern of IgG subclasses was IgG1+IgG2 in six patients, IgG1+IgG2+IgG3 in one patient, IgG1+IgG2+IgG4 in one more patient and two patients without intrathecal synthesis. CONCLUSION: The intrathecal synthesis pattern of IgG subclasses can contribute to eosinophilic meningoencephalitis diagnosis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

[Ecological restoration of Castanopsis carlesii forest in Wupin, Fujian].

Analyses on the effects of the different scales of human disturbance on restoration of Castanopsis carelesii forest in Wupin, Fujian indicated that with increasing degrees of the scales of human disturbance (A class, regeneration by selected cutting; B class, natural regeneration; C class, natural regeneration promoted by artificial tending; D class, Chinese fir forest), the important value of Castanopsis carlesii and the similar index between the communities decreased, and the assembling and abundance degrees of species increased under disturbance of B or C class, and decreased under D class. It could be concluded that the disturbance of A class was light, that of B class was medium and could be restored rapidly, disturbance of C class was also medium but would be restored in a longer period, and that of D class was difficult to be restored due to the intense disturbance.

[Parovarian cysts--not always benign].

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determinate the frequency, clinical aspects and management of epithelial parovarian neoplasms among patients hospitalised in our department. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This work has a retrospective character. The research material composed of patients treated in our clinic in the years 1992-2001 because of adnexal mass. In clinical analysis of 13 cases with epithelial parovarian neoplasms we took account of age, symptoms, ultrasound investigations, CA 125 levels, family history, operative treatment, histopathological examinations and follow up. RESULTS: Among 1110 patients operated for of adnexal mass 19.21% constituted parovarian cysts, and 2.6% (13 cases) of them were epithelial neoplasms (11 benign cystadenomas and 2 borderline malignancy neoplasms in FIGO I). The mean age of patient was 42.1. The clinical presentation was lower abdominal pain. CA 125 had the normal range in all patients. In ultrasound investigation parovarian cysts was suspected only in 2 cases when both normal ovaries were apparent. All patients were operated and extension of surgical procedures depended firs of all on age. Two patients with borderline tumors were operated in 1998 and have lived ever since without signs of disease. CONCLUSION: Parovarian cysts are not always benign and broad ligament region may be the point of issue for neoplasms of different histopathological types.

[Structural characteristics of Abies fabri forests at the upper reach of Yangtze River].

The structural characteristics of Abies fabri forest under different succession stages in Gongga Mountains at the upper reach of Yangtze River were studied. The results showed that in the mature Abies fabri forest, there existed abundant seeds and a few saplings of Abies fabri younger than 20 years, but only Abies fabri was the dominant regeneration species. In the poplar-fir mixed forest, the height growth of poplar and birch was very fast during first 30 years, and poplar and birch dominated rapidly over the canopy. Abies fabri had a lower growth rate and a strong shade-tolerance in its first growth stage, and could replace other tree species gradually. The cycle of mud-rock flow occurrence was above 100 years in the Gongga montane areas from elevation of 2800 to 3200 m. After mud-rock flow, poplar and birch often occurred and dominated, and there were only a small number of Abies fabri saplings in slash. Under natural condition, to recover Abies fabri forest would demand a long time, but this process could be controlled and improved by human activities.

[Synthesis, characterization and blood compatibility studies of biomedical aliphatic polyurethanes].

The one-step method was adopted in this study to synthesize aliphatic polyurethane with 4,4-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate(HMDI), 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and poly (tetrahydrofuran) (PTMG). The tests conducted on this material were: FIR spectrum, mechanical properties test, water contact angles test, hemolysis test and platelet adhesion test. Results showed that this material has a good tensile strength up to 30 Mpa, similar to aromaphatic polyurethane. But its tensile elongation, tensile permanent change, hydrophility are better than those of aromaphatic polyurethane. The hemolysis test and platelet adhesion test showed that it has good blood compatibility.

[Ecosystem productivity process model for landscape based on remote sensing and surface data].

In this paper, the a ecosystem productivity process model for landscape (EPPML) reflecting carbon and water cycles of system was described and discussed. In EPPML, leaf area index (LAI) that greatly influenced vegetation productivity was received from remote sensing images, the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of net primary productivity (NPP) and evapotranspiration were simulated. Geographical information system (GIS) was used to process, analyze, and display spatial data. Thus, the studies on physiological ecology could be extended, and converted from small scale to larger scale. Using EPPML, the vegetation productivity in Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve in 1995 was simulated. EPPML could well and truly simulate the NPP of main vegetations in the natural reserve. NPP was estimated to be 0.680 kg Cm.-2.yr.-1, mostly ranging from 0.105 to 1.241 kg C.m-2.yr.-1, accounting for 82.1%. The highest NPP (1.084 kg C.m-2.yr-1) appeared in mixed broad-leaved and Korean pine forests. The total NPP was estimated to be 1.332 x 10(6) t C.yr-1. The highest total NPP appeared in mixed broad-leaved and Korean pine forests and spruce-fir forest, which were 0.540 x 10(6) t C.yr.-1 and 0.428 x 10(6) t C.yr.-1, respectively. The seasonal variation of NPP appeared obvious single peak with peak value in July (6.13 g C.m-2.d-1). The most NPP accumulated in the summer, which was 0.465 kg C.m-2, secondly in the spring, and least in the winter.

[Simulation of temporal-spatial variation characteristics of surface runoff in Changbai Mountain based on process model for landscape scale].

The seasonal dynamics and spatial distribution characteristics of surface runoff in Changbai Mountain simulated by the process model (EPPML), and the relationships between surface runoff and environmental conditions were analyzed. The results showed that the seasonal variation of surface runoff in Changbai Mountain presented obvious three-peak pattern, i.e., the lowest values in June and September, peak values in August (2.58 mm.d-1), similar to that of soil water content. Total trend of surface runoff for different vegetations in the growing season was in order of grass and shrub > coniferous forest > broad-leaved forest > mixed broad-leaved and Korean pine forest, highly correlated to LAI. Annual surface runoff in 1995 was estimated to be 0.203 m.yr.-1, mostly ranging from 0.0 to 0.246.m.yr.-1, accounting for 69.3%. The trend of spatially increasing annual surface runoff along with increasing altitude was obvious. The maximum annual surface runoff appeared in alpine grass (0.619 m.yr.-1), minimum in mixed broad-leaved and Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) forest (0.081 m.yr.-1), others being alpine tundra, Betula ermanii forest, meadow, shrub, mixed spruce (Picea asperata) and fir (Abies nephrolepis) forest, Changbai larch (Larix olgensis) forest and broad-leaved forest. Vegetation and environmental conditions controlled the main trend of the spatial distribution of annual surface runoff in Changbai Mountain. There was very strong negative exponential correlativity between annual surface runoff and LAI (R2 = 0.857). The more LAI, the more literfall, the more precipitation intercepted by litter, thus, the less surface runoff. Annual surface runoff was highly negatively correlated with air temperature and total solar radiation (R2 being 0.965 and 0.836 respectively), however, it was highly positively correlated with precipitation, relative humidity and wind speed (R2 being more than 0.950). And annual surface runoff was also strongly correlated to soil characteristics.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the foot: MR findings.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the MRI findings in the various forms of pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of the foot. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven hundred and fifty-three MR studies of the foot performed at our institute between June 1994 and April 2000 were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of PVNS. Spin echo (SE) T1W, Gradient echo (GE) T2*W, and fat suppression (Short Time Inversion Recovery: STIR) images were acquired with a 0.5 T superconductive unit (Vectra, GE Medical System, Milwaukee, WI, USA) provided with a dedicated transmitter/receiver coil. The site and type of lesions, the signal intensity patterns, and the presence of associated changes were evaluated. RESULTS: On the basis of the MR images and the above parameters, six patients (3 men, 3 women, age range: 35-48 years) with PVNS were selected. Three out of six PVNS were nodular, whereas the remaining three were diffuse. Of the three nodular forms, one was found in the sub-talar joint and the remaining two antero-medially to the talus. Instead, all of the diffuse lesions were located on the metatarsus. Perilesional oedema was seen in all cases, although more obvious in the nodular forms, whereas bone involvement (osteochondral erosion) was observed only in the diffuse metatarsal PVNS. Intra-articular bloody effusion was never observed. The MRI findings were confirmed by surgery in all cases. DISCUSSION: The high contrast resolution and multiplanar capabilities of MRI allow the complete evaluation of the structures of the foot affected by PVNS, and of the extent of soft tissue (bursae, synovial or nervous structures), bone and articular involvement. Although not specific, the presence of haemosiderin results in characteristic MR findings, due to the shortening of both T1 and T2 relaxation times. GET2* images are particularly well suited to this PURPOSE: Furthermore, in our experience, FIR images added better depiction of associated swelling. CONCLUSIONS: According to our results, MRI is now the most reliable technique for identifying and classifying PVNS, and allows correct treatment planning and effective monitoring.

[Observation of carbon-bear free radicals using far infrared laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy].

The principle and technical characters of far infrared laser magnetic resonance (FIRLMR) spectrometer built up in China are introduced. A CO2 transversely pumped far infrared laser is adopted. In order to obtain high sensitivity, the sample absorption cell is placed in the FIR laser cavity and separated from laser gain cavity with thin polypropylene film. The spectrometer can be employed to study short lived free radicals. The spectra of many transient free radicals including CCH, CF and CH2 have been detected by the spectrometer. These transients are generated by mixing CH4 with the fluorine atoms produced with microwave discharge.
