[Clinical experience with assisted reproductive technology along the development of micro fertilization].

In 1993 we had the first success of micro fertilization in our clinic. The method by partial opening of oocyte zona pellucida initially used achieved a fertilization rate per egg of only 26.7%. Although transfer of sperm under the zona raised the fertilization rate to 39.2%, the new method involved problems such as polyspermy, which represented approximately 30% of the total fertilization rate. In addition, use of this method was limited to patients meeting several conditions. In 1994, we had a successful case of pregnancy after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The ICSI method resulted in a fertilization rate of about 70%, and has solved the problem of polyspermy. Fertilization of eggs has become possible using immotile sperm, and the technique of microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) and testicular sperm extraction (TESE) has been established. Clinical data have confirmed that a fertilization rate by frozen sperms is not lower than that by fresh sperms. Sperm can be stored frozen after MESA or TESE and therefore are surely available when needed, allowing to avoid spoiling retrieved eggs. No difference in fertilization rate was found between conditions needing micro fertilization or sperm recovery methods. No difference in pregnancy rate was shown between treatment cycles. Recent reports show improved pregnancy rates using techniques such as transferring a frozen embryo after endometrical adjustment. Further development in assisted reproductive technology is anticipated.

[Effect of different fertilizer combinations on water supply-demand status of winter wheat].

The soil water status during various growing stages of winter wheat and the effect of different fertilizer combinations on its yield and water use efficiency (WUE) were studied in a semihumid and slanting drought area by using the design of D-optimum saturation. According to water balance law, soil water supply was obviously different with different fertilizer combinations, reaching a peak when N and P fertilizers were combined applied with organic fertilizer, accounting for 27% of total water consumption. N fertilizer added alone took up 100% of total water consumption from rainfall. Water deficiency was most severe when N fertilizer was applied alone, but was the smallest when P fertilizer was applied with organic fertilizer. The combination of N, P and organic fertilizer could significantly improve winter wheat yield and its WUE.

[Effect of returning corn straw into soil on soil fertility].

Three-year field micro-plot experiment was conducted to study the effect of applying corn root stubble, corn straw, and the ordure of cattle fed with corn straw to improve soil fertility in northern Liaoning province. The results showed that chemical fertilizers could significantly increase the corn production, while organic fertilizers mainly improved the soil physical and chemical properties so as to increase soil fertility. In comparison with no fertilizer treatment, combination of chemical fertilizers and organic materials could increase soil organic matter by 3.06%-27.78%. The increments of soil organic matter by using different organic materials were in order of 100% corn straw > 50% corn straw > mixture of cattle ordure and soil > cattle ordure > 33% corn straw > corn root stubble. For maintaining and increasing soil organic matter, corn straw was better than mixture of cattle ordure and soil, and secondly better than cattle ordure if they contained the same carbon content. In addition, comparing with applying chemical fertilizers only, combination of chemical fertilizers and organic materials increased soil labile oxidization organic matter by 10.91%-20.67%, increased extractable humic acid by 1.43%-14.28%, raised slack/stable ratio of bonded humus by 0.07-0.19, and raised HA/FA ratio by 0.07-0.24. Meanwhile, this combination improved the soil nutrient status of N, P, and K, and the status of soil moisture and porosity, which demonstrated the increase of activity of soil organic matter and the improvement of soil fertility. So directly adding straw into soil without removing after harvest in autumn should be actively recommended, and the amount of corn straw added into soil should be 30 to 50 percent of the total production of corn straw.

[Effect of municipal sludge and chemical fertilizers on phthalic acid esters (PAEs) contents in Ipomoea aquatica grown on paddy soils].

GC/MS determinations on six phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in Ipomoea aquatic grown on potted paddy soil fertilized with municipal sludge and chemical fertilizers showed that the total contents of PAEs (sigma PAEs) in Ipomoea aquatic aboveground parts ranged from 2.129 mg.kg-1 to 7.111 mg.kg-1, decreasing in order of Guangzhou sludge + fertilizers (7.111 mg.kg-1) > Guangzhou sludge (4.767 mg.kg-1) > Foshan sludge (3.569 mg.kg-1) > Foshan sludge + fertilizers (3.305 mg.kg-1) > fertilizers (2.638 mg.kg-1) > control (2.129 mg.kg-1), indicating that compared with control, fertilization increased sigma PAEs in Ipomoea aquatica to a different extent. Only certain compounds of PAEs in different treatments of Ipomoea aquatica were dominant, e.g., butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP) in control, chemical fertilizers, Foshan sludge, and Guangzhou sludge accounted for 40% to 80% of sigma PAEs, di-n-butyl phthalate(DnBP) in foshan sludge + chemical fertilizers accounted for 56%, while di-n-octyl phthalate(DnOP), di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP) and BBP in Guangzhou sludge + chemical fertilizers accounted for approximately 30%. sigma PAEs and the contents of its most compounds were higher in the plants of Ipomoea aquatica than in its roots to a different extent.

[Growth and photosynthetic characteristics of field-grown Coffea arabica under different watering and fertilization managements].

Straw mulching and drip irrigation have been widely used for coffee production. In order to know if these techniques are suitable in Yunnan, five-year-old coffee plants were separated into 8 groups to grow in the field under 2 fertilization rates (low and high) and 4 watering regimes: dry straw mulching (M), drip irrigation (I), drip irrigation + straw mulching (MI) and control treatment (CK), and the effects of various watering and fertilization treatments on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Coffea arabica with the density of 4500 individuals per hectare were measured. The results showed that during one year's growth period, the coffee plants had two growth peaks, one was in May when the rainy season just begun, and the another was in August to September, the middle of rainy season. Higher fertilization promoted the relative height and length growth rates of the branches, but watering treatments hadn't significant effects on them. In dry season, watering significantly promoted the Pn, gs, Tr and WUE, while water status had no significant influence on the internal fluorescence features of PSII. In wet season, high-fertilized plants had a higher leaf nitrogen content and Pn than low-fertilized plants, and Pn was positively correlated with leaf nitrogen content. In both seasons, higher fertilization increased the WUE regardless of the watering treatments. At the same time, the high-fertilization treatment significantly alleviated diurnal photoinhibition, companying with a higher energy utilization through photochemistry and a higher energy dissipation through xanthophyll cycle, which appears that high-fertilized coffee plants have the mechanism to acclimate to strong light environment. All the results indicated that wet season is the optimum time for the photosynthesis and growth of C. arabica, and C. arabica needs a high fertilization investment and fine watering managements during its whole growth period. Among the three man-made watering treatments, MI was the best, M and I had the nearly same effects but the former was more practical than the latter.

[Fertilizing capability of breeding boars by evaluation of the early pregnancy factor in test sows].

The fertilizing ability of breeding boars was evaluated on the basis of an early pregnancy factor (EPF) determined in the blood serum of test sows by the method of rosette inhibition. The fertilizing ability was tested in ten boars on an insemination farm: the fertilizing potency of 41 ejaculates was evaluated from the percent conception of 105 test sows. The percent conception of test sows was evaluated from the EPF positive findings in the blood serum of these sows in the average range of 8.02 +/- 1.70 days (the range of 2 to 11 days) after insemination and from the recorded deliveries. The evaluation of the fertilizing of boars on the basis of EPF in test sows revealed in most cases the higher fertilization rate than could be found on the basis of the recorded deliveries of test sows. There was an exception to this trend: one breeding boar with a paradoxical finding of the somewhat higher percentage of deliveries recorder in test sows, in comparison with the fertilization ability according to the results of EPF. Identical results of the two criteria of fertilizing ability were recorder in another boar with a small number of tested ejaculates and test sows. The average fertilization of the whole set of the breeding boars, expressed by the average percent conception of all test sows, reached 86.67% on the basis of the EPF positive findings in 2 to 11 days after insemination, and 67.31% on the basis of recorded deliveries. These differences in fertilization are likely to be related to the share of dams and can be ascribed to embryonic mortality.

Control of fertility and fecundity of sheep by means of hormonal manipulation.

The results of four experiments are presented in summary form. The data are considered in relationship to the improvement of the fecundity and fertility of the Australian ewe breeding flock. In the first, three commonly used methods of oestrous synchronization were examined and showed differences that are attributed to the different patterns of hormonal changes associated with the methods demonstrated. The second experiment looked at the use of active immunization against testosterone and concluded that this method can improve fecundity but not fertility. The third experiment, a group of five trials, studied the use of progestagen sponges and PMSG in anoestrous ewes as a means of inducing normal fertility. The extensive data produced in this experiment allowed the relationships between ovulation rate and fertility and between fertility and prolificacy (fecundity) to be examined. Fertility appeared greatest when the mean flock ovulation rate was about 2.5. At this ovulation rate prolificacy was also improved and a high proportion of twins were produced. We concluded that high fertility and low prolificacy (i.e. of 1.00) are an unlikely combination. In the final experiment the effect of post-mating hormonal supplementation on fertility was examined and a number of earlier reports were confirmed by showing that fertility can be improved with supplementary progesterone between days 10 and 25 post-mating. The effect appears to be modified by hormonal and nutritional factors.

Birth spacing and fertility limitation: a behavioral analysis of a nineteenth century frontier population.

Our analysis of changing birth interval distributions over the course of a fertility transition from natural to controlled fertility has examined three closely related propositions. First, within both natural fertility populations (identified at the aggregate level) and cohorts following the onset of fertility limitation, we hypothesized that substantial groups of women with long birth intervals across the individually specified childbearing careers could be identified. That is, even during periods when fertility behavior at the aggregate level is consistent with a natural fertility regime, birth intervals at all parities are inversely related to completed family size. Our tabular analysis enables us to conclude that birth spacing patterns are parity dependent; there is stability in CEB-parity specific mean and birth interval variance over the entire transition. Our evidence does not suggest that the early group of women limiting and spacing births was marked by infecundity. Secondly, the transition appears to be associated with an increasingly larger proportion of women shifting to the same spacing schedules associated with smaller families in earlier cohorts. Thirdly, variations in birth spacing by age of marriage indicate that changes in birth intervals over time are at least indirectly associated with age of marriage, indicating an additional compositional effect. The evidence we have presented on spacing behavior does not negate the argument that parity-dependent stopping behavior was a powerful factor in the fertility transition. Our data also provide evidence of attempts to truncate childbearing. Specifically, the smaller the completed family size, the longer the ultimate birth interval; and ultimate birth intervals increase across cohorts controlling CEB and parity. But spacing appears to represent an additional strategy of fertility limitation. Thus, it may be necessary to distinguish spacing and stopping behavior if one wishes to clarify behavioral patterns within a population (Edlefsen, 1981; Friedlander et al., 1980; Rodriguez and Hobcraft, 1980). Because fertility transition theories imply increased attempts to limit family sizes, it is important to examine differential behavior within subgroups achieving different family sizes. It is this level of analysis which we have attempted to achieve in utilizing parity-specific birth intervals controlled by children ever born.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Intracellular pH shift leads to microtubule assembly and microtubule-mediated motility during sea urchin fertilization: correlations between elevated intracellular pH and microtubule activity and depressed intracellular pH and microtubule disassembly.

The regulation of the microtubule-mediated motions within eggs during fertilization was investigated in relation to the shift in intracellular pH (pHi) that occurs during the ionic sequence of egg activation in the sea urchins Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata. Microtubule assembly during formation of the sperm aster and mitotic apparatus was detected by anti-tubulin immunofluorescence microscopy, and the microtubule-mediated migrations of the sperm and egg nuclei were studied with time-lapse video differential interference contrast microscopy. Manipulations of intracellular pH were verified by fluorimetric analyses of cytoplasmic fluorescein incorporated as fluorescein diacetate. The ionic sequence of egg activation was manipulated i) to block the pHi shift at fertilization or reduce the pHi of fertilized eggs to unfertilized values, ii) to elevate artificially the pHi of unfertilized eggs to fertilized values, and iii) to elevate artificially or permit the normal pHi shift in fertilized eggs in which the pHi shift at fertilization was previously prevented. Fertilized eggs in which the pHi shift was suppressed did not assemble microtubules or undergo the normal microtubule-mediated motions. In fertilized eggs in which the pHi was reduced to unfertilized levels after the assembly of the sperm aster, no motions were detected. If the intracellular pH was later permitted to rise, normal motile events leading to division and development occurred, delayed by the time during which the pH elevation was blocked. Microtubule-mediated events occurred in eggs in which the intracellular pH was elevated, even in unfertilized eggs in which the pH was artificially increased. These results indicate that the formation and normal functioning of the egg microtubules is initiated, either directly or indirectly, by the shift in intracellular pH that occurs during fertilization.

[The effects of calmodulin and it's antagonist, W-7, on the acrosome reaction and fertilization of human spermatozoa].

The acrosome reaction of mammalian spermatozoa has been shown to be dependent upon an influx of Ca2+ following capacitation. Recently it was shown that calmodulin which activates various enzymatic activities in a calcium-dependent manner is contained in the acrosomal portion of sperm obtained from diverse species including human. Therefore calmodulin appears to be the primary target for Ca2+-dependent regulatory process involved in the acrosome reaction. This report examines the effects of calmodulin and it's antagonist, W-7, on the acrosome reaction in human spermatozoa and the fertilization with zona free hamster eggs. The results are as follows: 1) In the experiment on fertilization in mBWW medium with 30nM of calmodulin, there was no significant difference between the calmodulin and the control. (2) In fertilization in mBWW medium with 2.5 to 25 microM of W-7, there were no significant changes in the fertilization rate, but there was a significant decrease in the fertilization rate when the concentration of W-7 was elevated up to 50 microM. (3) When fertilization in mBWW was performed using spermatozoa pretreated with W-7, the fertilization rates were more markedly and promptly elevated with insemination times than the control. (4) When the eggs and spermatozoa were pretreated with W-7 before insemination and then placed in mBWW medium, the fertilization rate was markedly decreased. (5) Triple stain method and transmission electron microscopy showed that a large proportion of spermatozoa had undergone the acrosome reaction in mBWW medium containing W-7 with normal manner. From the results given above, it appears that calmodulin plays an important role in the acrosome reaction and fertilization in human spermatozoa.

In vitro fertilizing ability of testicular, epididymal, and ejaculated rabbit spermatozoa.

The fertilizing ability of testicular, epididymal, and ejaculated rabbit spermatozoa was evaluated in vitro following in vitro capacitation by high ionic strength treatment. Fewer than 11% of inseminated ova were apparently fertilized (i.e., in pronuclear, two-, and four-cell stages as determined by light microscopy) when testicular sperm treated with caffeine, caput epididymal, or corpus epididymal sperm samples were tested. A greater fertilizing ability, reflected by the percentage of ova fertilized and more normal progression of embryonic development, was exhibited by cauda epididymal sperm. Of 93 ova, 68 (73.1%) were fertilized by cauda sperm, whereas ejaculated sperm from the same 10 bucks fertilized 34 (36.6%) of 93 ova (P is less than 0.005). Ultrastructural examination of selected ova apparently fertilized by sperm from levels of the male reproductive tract proximal to the cauda epididymidis revealed abnormal activation. Authentic fertilization occurred when ova were inseminated with cauda epididymal and ejaculated sperm. An unusual and infrequent form of activation involving failure of cortical granule breakdown in ova penetrated by cauda epididymal and ejaculated sperm was seen. A comparison of fertilizing ability of sperm from first, second, and third ejaculates revealed a significant decrease with the third ejaculate (P is less than 0.01).

The effect of calcium ion channel blockers on sperm fertilization potential.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of calcium ion (Ca2+) channel blockers on male fertility potential. DESIGN: A case comparison of the surface expression of mannose-ligand receptors on motile spermatozoa from 10 known fertile males and from 10 normospermic men taking Ca2+ channel blockers who were seeking infertility treatment. Examination of the effects of in vitro exposure of sperm from fertile donors (n = 14) to antihypertensive medications. SETTING: Patients from a successful university hospital-based IVF-assisted reproductive technology program and from a male urology private practice. INTERVENTIONS: Prescription of alternate hypotensive medications for four male patients; cholesterol loading and unloading in vitro of fertile donor sperm. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Motile sperm were tested for their ability to bind fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled, mannosylated bovine serum albumin as an index of the surface expression of mannose-ligand receptors associated with fertility potential. Acrosome status was simultaneously evaluated by fluorescence microscopy with rhodamine-labeled Pisum sativum lectin. Sperm were assayed before and after an 18-hour or 3-day incubation under capacitating conditions in vitro. RESULTS: Motile spermatozoa of normospermic men taking calcium antagonists for hypertension control do not express head-directed mannose-ligand receptors at high frequency, nor do they undergo spontaneous acrosome loss. Unexpectedly, mannose-ligand receptor translocation from the subplasmalemmal space over the acrosome to the sperm surface and aggregation over the equatorial-postacrosomal regions occurred in acrosome-intact sperm. This differs from fertile controls in whom receptor translocation to the equatorial-postacrosomal segment is coupled with the acrosome reaction (AR). Discontinuation of calcium antagonists results in complete recovery of parameters associated with sperm fertilizing potential: time-dependent increases in the percentages of spermatozoa exhibiting surface mannose-ligand binding and spontaneous ARs in vitro. The effects of in vivo administration of calcium antagonists is mimicked in control fertile donor sperm by inclusion of a Ca2+ channel blocker in the media employed during capacitating incubations. CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic administrations of calcium antagonists for hypertension control cause reversible male infertility associated with an IVF failure. A mechanism of inhibition of sperm fertilizing potential through insertion of lipophilic calcium ion antagonists into the lipid bilayer of the sperm plasma membrane is consistent with our in vitro studies.

Study of protein kinase C antagonists on cortical granule exocytosis and cell-cycle resumption in fertilized mouse eggs.

Although pharmacological agonists of protein kinase C (PKC) stimulate some events of mammalian egg activation, including cortical granule (CG) exocytosis, it is not known if these events are dependent on PKC activation during the normal process of fertilization. In order to examine the potential role of PKC in CG exocytosis, this study investigated whether PKC agonists faithfully mimic CG release and whether PKC antagonists block fertilization-induced CG release in mature mouse eggs. Phorbol ester (TPA, 2.5 ng/ml) treatment resulted in an atypical pattern of CG release in which there was a greater net loss of CGs in the equatorial region of the egg than in the region opposite the spindle. This pattern also was in contrast to that during fertilization, in which CG release occurred randomly throughout the cortex. Fertilization experiments utilized two different PKC inhibitors, bisindolylmaleimide (5 microM) and chelerytherine (0.8 microM), targeted to both the "conserved" substrate and ATP binding domains of PKC. Simultaneous use of both inhibitors at maximal concentrations (compatible with fertilization and above their IC50S) resulted in no detectable inhibition of CG release in treated fertilized eggs compared to controls. In addition no inhibition of anaphase onset was observed in treated fertilized eggs. Activity of the inhibitors was verified by demonstrating that they blocked the induction of CG loss by TPA. Moreover, 1 microM staurosporine, a potent but less specific antagonist of PKC, also did not block CG loss whereas the metaphase-anaphase transition was temporarily inhibited. The results indicate that TPA does not faithfully mimic CG release in fertilized eggs, that a role for PKC in CG release at fertilization remains to be established, and that other calcium-dependent effectors may be involved in CG exocytosis.

Sex-role reversal and the absence of extra-pair fertilization in Wilson's phalaropes.

Extra-pair fertilizations are common in birds, which has led to great interest in how this phenomenon is regulated at a proximate level and how extra-pair fertilizations, and extra-pair fertilization avoidance, shape avian social systems. In Wilson's phalaropes, Phalaropus tricolor, incubation and brood-rearing is performed exclusively by males. Males are able to rear only a single brood of four during a breeding season. This suggests that males have a high level of paternity in clutches and broods under their care and, thus, that extra-pair fertilizations are infrequent. In contrast, female social dominance, lack of territoriality and frequent interactions among breeding adults suggest that both males and females have the opportunity to engage in extra-pair copulations. Using DNA fingerprint band-sharing between putative parents and offspring, we found no evidence of extra-pair fertilizations among 51 offspring from 17 families of phalaropes. Copulation disruption by non-copulatory adults, ability of females to reject copulation attempts and potential fitness benefits to females by avoiding extra-pair fertilizations were sufficient to explain the absence of extra-pair fertilizations in Wilson's phalaropes. We propose that sex-role reversal affects the relative costs and benefits to females of seeking extra-pair fertilizations. At the time of clutch completion, females have invested particularly heavily in their clutches due to intense competition among females to gain and keep a mate during the pre-laying and laying periods. After clutch completion, nest success requires significant male parental care. Benefits to females in gaining extra-pair fertilizations may be offset by the risk of losing male parental care. Viability and fertility of human hepatic hydatid cysts.

INTRODUCTION: The adequate treatment for hydatidosis requires a knowledge of certain aspects related to the survival of infectious agents, especially protoscoleces. The aim of this study is to evaluate the viability of protoscoleces in human hepatic hydatid cysts in order to determine the prevalence of their fertility and to study the association with variables typical of the host and of the parasite. MATERIALS: A cross-sectional study was done in biological material (the fluid from human hepatic hydatid cysts). The viability criteria used were: ovoid form, invaginated scolices and intact calcareous corpuscles, the presence of vibrating movements, and the absence of "vital" staining. The cysts were grouped as univesicular cysts (UVC), multivesicular cysts (MVC) and abscessed cysts (LAHO). Fertility was defined as living protoscoleces in relation to the total number of protoscoleces. Descriptive statistics were for the calculation of the prevalence of fertility, analytical statistics for the comparison of groups, and a multivariate analysis for the examination of the association between cyst fertility and clinical variables. RESULTS: A total of 163 cysts with a median diameter of 15 cm were studied in this way. Of these lesions, 79 (48.5%) were UVC, 54 (33.1%) MVC, and 30 (18.4%) LAHO. On 99 occasions (60.7%), macroscopic communication was evident in the bile duct, and a prevalence of general fertility of 57.1% (94.4% for MVC, 53.2% for UVC, and 0% for LAHO, with a value of P<0.001). Association with location, type, and diameter of the cyst, and presence of biliary communications was verified by applying a bivariate analysis, and association between fertility and the variables of the type of the cyst and the existence of biliary communications was verified employing a multivariate analysis (P values of 0.004 and <0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of fertility found was low. The main prevalence of fertility was observed in MVCs. Fertility is associated with the type of cyst and the presence of biliary communications.

Effects of media and the presence of bovine oviduct epithelial cells during in vitro fertilization on fertilizability and developmental capacity of bovine oocytes.

The effect of the presence of bovine oviduct epithelial cells (BOEC; Experiment 1) as well as the effects of media (Tyrode fertilization medium: TFM vs synthetic oviduct fluid: SOF), fertilization containers (drops in petri dish vs 96-wells), and the number of oocytes per drop and well (5 vs 10) for in vitro fertilization (Experiment 2) on the fertilizability and in vitro development of bovine oocytes were investigated. Immature oocytes with cumulus cells were cultured in TCM199 supplemented with 10% ECS and 2.5x10(6) granulosa cells for 24 hours at 39 degrees C under 5% CO(2) in air. In vitro fertilization was performed with frozen-thawed, heparin-treated spermatozoa (100 mug/ml, 15 minutes) and with BOEC (Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, in vitro fertilization was performed with two different media (TFM and SOF) and various conditions (culture dish and different number of oocytes). Cleavage, development to the blastocyst stage were evaluated on Day 2 and Day 7 after the start of culture. Effect of the presence of BOEC on fertilizability and developmental capacity (Experiment 1) was not significantly different. In Experiment 2, alterations in media, containers and number of oocytes during in vitro fertilization had no affect. The SOF medium showed results similar to those of TFM (normal fertilization rate: 63.2 vs 64%; cleavage: 69.3 vs 73.9%; development to the blastocyst stage: 14 vs 15%; and mean number of nuclei per blastocyst: 80.5 vs 86.6). The results indicate that the presence of BOEC during in vitro fertilization did not improve fertilizability, and that SOF as well as TFM medium can be utilized as a simple fertilization medium.

Epidemiological study on factors influencing fertility indices in Israeli dairy herds.

The objective of this study was to determine feeding factors connected with differences in the fertility of Israeli Kibbutz dairy herds. In an epidemiological case-control survey, data from 30, low-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 35% in multiparous cows were compared with the data from 30, high-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 48% in multiparous cows. Nutritional factors accounted for 67% of the differences between low-fertility and high-fertility herds in the overall conception rate of multiparous cows, while only 4.8% could be related to the body condition during the dry period. Among the factors which occurred more frequently in the low-fertility than in the high-fertility herds were 1) a higher average protein density and lower energy/protein ratio was fed during lactation and 2) a single feeding group was maintained for all lactating cows. 3) There were phytoestrogens in the silage or alfalfa hay, fed during lactation. 4) Faulty dry period was instituted, which was defined as the presence of at least one of the following three practices: a) the daily feed was above 3 kg of high lactation mix; b) more than 15 Mcal of net energy per day was given during the first part of the dry period; c) more than 30% of the cows were obese during the dry period. Three or more risk factors were found in one high-fertility herd and in 20 low-fertility herds. This finding emphasizes the importance of identifying and removing risk factors as a possible means for improving the reproductive performance of herds.
