BioSYNTHESIS: access to a knowledge network of health sciences databases.

Users of the IAIMS Knowledge Network at the Georgetown University Medical Center have access to multiple in-house and external databases from a single point of entry through BioSYNTHESIS. The IAIMS project has developed a rich environment of biomedical information resources that represent a medical decision support system for campus physicians and students. The BioSYNTHESIS system is an information navigator that provides transparent access to a Knowledge Network of over a dozen databases. These multiple health sciences databases consist of bibliographic, informational, diagnostic, and research systems which reside on diverse computers such as DEC VAXs, SUN 490, AT&T 3B2s, Macintoshes, IBM PC/PS2s and the AT&T ISN and SYTEK network systems. Ethernet and TCP/IP protocols are used in the network architecture. BioSYNTHESIS also provides network links to the other campus libraries and to external institutions. As additional knowledge resources and technological advances have become available. BioSYNTHESIS has evolved from a two phase to a three phase program. Major components of the system including recent achievements and future plans are described.

Online bibliographic information: integration into an emerging IAIMS environment.

The Medical Library at Yale University has developed an online free-text database containing Current Contents citations. The database was designed to be integrated into an emerging campus-wide information environment. To this end Current Contents at Yale was designed with a user interface familiar to the Yale community, an alerting service based on electronic mail, and search expansion using the National Library of Medicine's Meta-1 metathesaurus.

Plants of restricted use indicated by three cultures in Brazil (Caboclo-river dweller, Indian and Quilombola).

A detailed record of plants cited during ethnopharmacological surveys, suspected of being toxic or of triggering adverse reactions, may be an auxiliary means to pharmacovigilance of phytomedicines, in that it provides greater knowledge of a "bad side" to plant resources in the Brazilian flora. This study describes 57 plant species of restricted use (abortive, contraceptive, contraindicated for pregnancy, prescribed in lesser doses for children and the elderly, to easy delivery, in addition to poisons to humans and animals) as indicated during ethnopharmacological surveys carried out among three cultures in Brazil (Caboclos-river dwellers, inhabitants of the Amazon forest; the Quilombolas, from the pantanal wetlands; the Krahô Indians, living in the cerrado savannahs). These groups of humans possess notions, to a remarkable extent, of the toxicity, contraindications, and interaction among plants. A bibliographical survey in the Pubmed, Web of Science and Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases has shown that 5 out of the 57 species have some toxic properties described up to the present time, they are: Anacardium occidentale L. (Anacardiaceae), Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul (Moraceae), Senna alata (L.) Roxb. (Fabaceae), Senna occidentalis (L.) Link (Fabaceae), Strychnos pseudoquina A. St.-Hil. (Loganiaceae) and Vernonia brasiliana (L.) Druce (Asteraceae).

[Spanish bibliographic production on AIDS. Bibliometric approach].

BACKGROUND: We analyze Spanish production of the books published in Spain about AIDS and they are put together in the database ISBN. METHODS: For every book there considered various things: author, year of publication, ISBN classification, language, edition, place publicated and publishers were analyzed. RESULTS: There are 275 books analyzed. Which they are classified in the Data Base under 33 different classes. The principal class is general pathology, clinic medicine and therapeutics with 113 books. The places in which more books where published was Barcelona (39.63%) and Madrid (30.54%). The publishing house were the ones which published more books (44.26%). The 81.81% of the books were written originally by some of the languages of our country, with at 18.18% which were transduced by other languages. The ones that were transduced were principally english (54%) and french (34%). CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm the tendency observed in other studies and indicate the increase of Spanish publications on AIDS, this is observe after the years.

[Title, abstract and keywords: essential issues in medical bibliographic research].

UNLABELLED: Medical information, conveyed either by books, journal articles, conference and congress papers or posters, represents the product, the result of the medical research. Note that the informational cycle can be shown schematically as Bibliographic information --> Medical research --> Research results --> Bibliographic information. The result of the scientific research (articles, posters, etc.) re-enters the informational cycle, as bibliographic information for a new medical research. The bibliographic research is still a time, and effort consuming activity, despite the explosive growth of information technology. It requires specific medical, information technology and bibliographic knowledge. AIM: The present work aims to emphasize the importance of title, keywords and abstract terms selection, to article writing and publication in medical journals, and the proper choice of meta-information in web pages. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The bibliographic research was made using two databases with English language information about articles from international medical journals: MEDLINE (PUBMED) and PROQUEST MEDICAL LIBRARY. The results were compared with GOOGLE and YAHOO search. These searching engines are common now in all types of Internet users (including researchers, librarians, etc.). CONCLUSIONS: It is essential for the researchers to know the article registration mechanism in a database and the modalities of bibliographic investigation of online databases, so that the title, keyword and abstract terms are selected properly. The use of words not related to the subject, in title, keywords or abstract, results in ambiguities. The writing and the translation of scientific words must also be accurate, mainly when article authors are non-native English speakers: e.g., chimiotherapy (sic)--20 articles in Medline, 270 articles in Google; morphopathology (sic)-- 78 articles in Medline, and 294 in Google; morphopatology (sic)--2 articles in Medline, and 12 articles in Google.

Database "SIGMA Pro" information system and bibliographical management of active substances of plant protection products and biocides.

In order to satisfy its obligations as stipulated in European legislative, in 1998, the Management of Surface Waters in the Walloon Region modified its monitoring of plant protection products in surface waters in co-operation with the Regional Phyto Committee (LLN). Notably, this monitoring network takes into account the agricultural specifics of the main watersheds in Wallonia. It has led to the publication of a specific decree (A.G.W. of June 29th, 2000), which, among others, specifies the list of dangerous relevant substances in Walloon Region as well as their investigation methods (quality, monitoring network, action programmes). Together with the implementation of Directive 76/464/EEC concerning the pollution caused by some dangerous substances in aquatic environment, the Management of Surface Waters is also finalizing a database connected with plant production products. It contains technical data on active ingredients and relevant metabolites (nomenclature, toxicology, physico-chemical properties, ...), bibliographical information referring to these (synthesis of documents, table with results, ...) and some Internet connections. It has been elaborated so as to help Walloon public authorities make their decision.
