Subjective symptoms and psychological performance of chlorine-alkali workers.

Subjective symptoms and psychological performances on a computer-administered test battery were studied among a group of 60 chlorine-alkali workers and their matched referents. The exposure time of the group exposed to inorganic mercury vapor had been about 14 years, and the estimated long-term average exposure had been about 25 micrograms/m3 of air. The exposed workers had an actual mercury concentration of 51.9 (SD 25.0, range 15-150) nmol/l in blood and 84.1 (SD 56.6, range 15-260) nmol/l in urine. Neither perceptual motor nor memory nor learning abilities of the mercury-exposed workers showed any disturbances in a comparison with the referents. However, the exposed group reported statistically significantly more memory disturbances than the referents. Strain caused by three-shift work was a possible cofactor for other increased subjective symptoms, namely, for sleep disorders, fatigue, and confusion.

A new alkali-resistant hemoglobin alpha2J Oxford gammaF2 in a Sicilian baby girl with homozygous beta0 thalassemia.

A 10-mo-old baby girl with homozygous beta0 thalassemia and alphaJOxford, presenting the clinical picture of homozygous beta thalassemia is described. Hemoglobin electrophoresis showed three bands: the first two with the mobilities of hemoglobin Hb A2 (1%) and Hb F (69%), respectively, the third migrating a little faster than Hb A (30%). About 30% of her alpha chains were J Oxford which, bound to her gamma chains, produced a new alkali-resistant hemoglobin, alpha2 J Oxford gamma F2, which has not been described previously. Hemoglobin synthesis in vitro showed the absence of beta chain synthesis and an alpha/non-alpha ratio of 2. The patient's father was heterozygous for both the Hb J Oxford and beta0 thalassemia genes, the mother a carrier of beta0 thalassemia; four other relatives were carriers of Hb J Oxford, and one was a carrier of beta thalassemia.

The timing of alkali metasomatism in paleosols.

We have measured the concentrations of rubidium and strontium and 87Sr/86Sr values of whole-rock samples from three paleosols of different ages. The oldest of the three weathering horizons, the 2,760 Ma Mt. Roe #1 paleosol in the Fortescue Group of Western Australia, experienced addition of Rb, and probably Sr, at 2,168 +/- 10 Ma. The intermediate paleosol, developed on the Hekpoort Basalt in South Africa, is estimated to have formed at 2,200 Ma, and yields a Rb-Sr isochron age of 1,925 +/- 32 Ma. The youngest of the three paleosols, developed on the Ongeluk basalt in Griqualand West, South Africa ca. 1,900 Ma, yielded a Rb-Sr age of 1,257 +/- 11 Ma. The Rb-Sr systematics of all three paleosols were reset during post-weathering metasomatism related to local or regional thermal disturbances. The Rb-Sr systematics of the paleosols were not subsequently disturbed. The near-complete removal of the alkali and alkaline earth elements from these paleosols during weathering made them particularly susceptible to resetting of their Rb-Sr systematics. Paleosols of this type are therefore sensitive indicators of the timing of thermal disturbances.

Host immune responses against hog cholera virus in pigs treated with an ionized alkali mineral complex.

To determine the immune responses in pigs to hog cholera virus after treatment with an ionized alkali mineral complex (IAMC), 40 healthy pigs (28-32 days old) from a commercial swine farm were purchased and housed into 4 groups (n=10 each). All pigs were vaccinated intramuscularly (1 ml) with an attenuated live hog cholera virus (HCV, LOM strain) at 28-32 days old and challenged with a virulent hog cholera virus at 8 weeks after vaccination. Each group was treated with PowerFeel sprayed diet as 0.05% (w/w) in a final concentration (T-1, n=10), a diet mixed with SuperFeed as 3% (w/w) in a final concentration (T-2, n=10), or a diluted PowerFeel solution (1:500, v/v) as drinking water (T-3, n=10), respectively. A group (n=10) served as a non-treated control. Proportions of expressing CD2+ and CD8+ cells increased significantly (p<, 0.05) at 8-week post-application. Mean antibody titers of each group against HCV gradually increased to higher levels after vaccination and with challenge of the virulent virus. In conclusion, the IAMC-treated diets can be helpful for the improvement of growth in pigs with proper vaccination program, while the IAMC-treated diets have no effects on the clinical protection against hog cholera.

Media calcification, low erythrocyte magnesium, altered plasma magnesium, and calcium homeostasis following grafting of the thoracic aorta to the infrarenal aorta in the rat--differential preventive effects of long-term oral magnesium supplementation alone and in combination with alkali.

Calcifications in arterial media are clinically well documented, but the role played by magnesium in pathophysiology and therapy is uncertain. To clarify this, an animal model in which the juxtacardial aorta was grafted to the infrarenal aorta, and the subsequent calcifications in the media of the graft and their response to oral supplementation with three magnesium-containing and alkalinizing preparations was investigated. Groups of highly inbred rats were formed as follows: sham-operation (Sham, n = 12), aorta transplantation (ATx, n = 12), ATx + magnesium citrate (MgC, n = 12), ATx + MgC + potassium citrate (MgCPC, n = 12), ATx + MgC + MgCPC (MgCPCSB, n = 12). At 84 (+/-2) days after ATx with or without treatment the following observations were made: (1) weight gain and general status were normal; (2) ATx rats developed massive media calcification, mineral accumulation in the graft, decreased erythrocyte magnesium and plasma parathyroid hormone, and increased plasma ionized magnesium and calcium, and uric acid; (3) Mg-treated rats developed variable degrees of metabolic alkalosis, but only MgCPCSB supplementation prevented calcifications. Additional findings after ATx alone were: imbalance in endothelin and nitric oxide production, the mineral deposited in media was poorly crystallized calcium phosphate, calcium exchange between plasma and graft, and bone resorption were unchanged. The superior anti-calcification effect of MgCPCSB was characterized by complete restoration of normal extracellular mineral homeostasis and uric acid, but sub-optimal normalization of erythrocyte magnesium. It was concluded that in the rat: (1) ATx causes loss of cellular magnesium, excess of extracellular magnesium and calcium in the presence of apparently unchanged bone resorption, and increased uricemia; (2) ATx facilitates enhanced influx of calcium into vascular tissue, leading to calcium phosphate deposition in the media; (3) ATx-induced calcification is prevented by dietary supplementation with a combination of magnesium, alkali citrate and bases. Although the described circulatory model of media calcification in the rat requires further investigation, the data allow ascribing a fundamental role to magnesium and acid-base metabolism.

[Chronic occupational mercury exposure in renal damage in workers in the chlorine-alkali electrolysis industry].

The authors investigated renal damage in 46 chlorine-alkaly plant workers (mean age was 38.8 +/- 5.7 years) under conditions of continued occupational exposure to metallic mercury vapour. The mercury unexposed control group consisted of 32 workers who works in the plant area. Significantly low of serum globulin level was found in exposed evaluated group compared with control subjects (P < 0.001). The serum globulin level was in correlation with urine mercury level (P < 0.001). Analyses of urine chemistry indicated that exposed workers had cell death produces in sediment urine as the most common signs (P < 0.001). The proteinuria was found in 4 out 32 and high level of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase in 8 out 32 exposed workers to high mercury level workers. Additionally, disuria and ejaculatory pain as symptoms occurred without evidence of urological disease. Mercury induced nephropathy usually associated with proteinuria, but is not with renal insufficiency.

Immunostimulatory effects of anionic alkali mineral complex solution Barodon in porcine lymphocytes.

The anionic alkali mineral complex solution, Barodon (Barodon-S.F. Corp., Korea), was evaluated for its effectiveness as a nonspecific immunostimulator in pigs. The effects of Barodon were determined by analysis of feed efficiency, growth rate, and phenotype of leukocyte subpopulations using monoclonal antibodies specific to porcine leukocyte differentiation antigens and flow cytometry (FC). The study was focused to investigate the change in proportion of the CD4+CD8+ double positive T lymphocyte subpopulation (dpp) which exists uniquely in pigs. In addition, the mitogen-stimulated lymphoproliferative response, tissue distribution in lymphoid organs and the adjuvant effect of Barodon on hog cholera vaccine efficiency were determined. The study has revealed the average daily gain rates and feed conversion rates were significantly (p<0.05) improved in either group of pigs fed with 0.05% Barodon-spray feed (Tx-1) or pigs fed with 3% Barodon-fermented feed (Tx-2) in comparison with group of pigs fed with feed containing no Barodon (control). The proportion of cells expressing CD4+ antigen in Barodon-treated group increased from 3 weeks posttreatment and was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of control at 8 weeks posttreatment. Particularly, the significantly higher proportion was maintained from 8 weeks through 13 weeks posttreatment in Tx-1 group (p<0.05). The proportion of cells expressing CD8+ antigen was significantly higher at 3 weeks posttreatment in Tx-2 (p<0.01). Proportion of MHC class II-expressing cells was significantly higher in Tx-1 and Tx-2 group at 11 weeks and 8 weeks posttreatment (p<0.05), respectively. In addition, the proportion of Non T/Non B (N) cells was also significantly higher in Tx-2 at 3 weeks posttreatment (p<0.01) and maintained to 13 weeks posttreatment (p<0.1). Between Barodon-treated groups, the proportion of MHC class II-expressing cells was observed to be larger in Tx-2 than Tx-1 from 3 weeks to 8 weeks posttreatment (p<0.05). However, there were no significant difference in the proportions of CD2+ cells, B cells, monocytes and granulocytes between Barodon-treated and control group during the experiment. Dual-color FC analysis, study has revealed an increased proportion of dpp present in lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood (PB) and mesenteric lymph node (MLN) of Barodon-treated group at 8 and 11 weeks posttreatment. The proportion of dpp in PB was 27.5% and 32.1% in Tx-1 and Tx-2, respectively, but only 2.2% in control group at 8 weeks posttreatment. In MLN, the proportion was 45.1% and 52.1% in Tx-1 and Tx-2, respectively, otherwise 16.5% in control group at 8 weeks posttreatment. The mitogen-stimulated activity was significantly higher in Tx-1 than in the control group at 11 weeks posttreatment when cells were stimulated with Con A and PHA, respectively (p<0.01). Also, Con A-, PHA and PWM-stimulated activity was significantly higher in Tx-2 than in the control group at the same time (p<0.05). The tissue distribution of CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+CD8+ dpp in MLN and spleen was significantly larger in Tx-1 and Tx-2 than in the control group (p<0.01). Also, a larger proportion of dpp was observed in Tx-2 than Tx-1 in spleen between Barodon-treated groups (p<0.01). In conclusion, the study has demonstrated that Barodon had an immunostimulatory effect on pigs through proliferation and activation of porcine immune cells, specially CD4+CD8+ dpp lymphocytes.

[The changes in the structure and properties of alkali-soluble humic substances in phosphorus-enriched gray forest soil].

The dynamics of spectral and kinetic properties of alkali-soluble humic substances in the gray forest soil were studied in the course of its incubation with NH4H2PO4 (44.5 mg P per 100 g soil) for seven days, one year, and three years. The results provided evidence for consistent changes in the energy state of electrons in the functional groups of humic molecules extracted from the phosphorus-enriched soil. The structure of these molecules markedly changed by the end of the experiment, which was manifested in the increased number of coupled chromophores (due to the formation of additional C=C bonds) and the accumulation of new strongly polar functional groups (P=O). These changes provided for an increased solubility of soil humus in 0.1 N NaOH, higher saturation of dissolved humic substances with metals, and a different pattern of the distribution of carbon, metals, and phosphorus between the fractions of humic and fulvic acids.

[Fluorescence study on the interaction of alizarin yellow R and bovine serum albumin in alkali solution].

The interaction of alizarin yellow R(AYR) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by fluorescence method in alkali buffer solution. It was shown that AYR had a powerful ability to quench the BSA fluorescence at excitation and emission wavelengths of lambda(ex) = 393 nm and lambda(em) = 641 nm in the medium solution of pH 11.00, and there were five binding sites of AYR to BSA; The combination reaction of AYR with BSA was a static quenching process, and from the effects of temperature on the fluorescence quenching rate of AYR-BSA and the Stern-Volmer quenching constant (K(SV)) and the Lineweaver-Burk quenching constant (K(LB)), the binding constant was calculated to be K = 1.6 x 10(4) L x mol(-1); as the enthalpy change deltaH(theta) < 0 and entropy change deltaS(theta) < 0, and AYR has an ability to quench the BSA-CBBG fluorescence, it can be deduced that the Van der Walls force and hydrogen bond are the main binding forces between AYR and BSA.

[Fluorimetric determination of trace ruthenium in anode slime of alkali chloride factory with 1,10-phenanthroline].

The complex reaction of ruthenium with 1,10-phenanthroline was studied. In the medium of pH 5 HAc-NaAc buffer and NH2OH * HCl solution, ruthenium reacts with 1,10-phenanthroline to form a 1 : 3 complex by heating in a boiling water bath for 5 min. The fluorescence peak excitation wavelength is 448 nm, and the emission peak wavelength is 586 nm. The linear relation between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of Ru(II) was found to be 0-10 microg x 25 mL(-1). The ruthenium in the sample was separated by distill. The method has been used to the determination of ruthenium in anode slime of alkali chloride factory with satisfactory results.

Prevention by medroxyprogesterone of perforation in the alkali-burned rabbit cornea: inhibition of collagenolytic activity.

The incidence of perforation and deep ulceration of the alkali-burned rabbit cornea was substantially reduced by topical or parenteral administration of medroxyprogesterone. The mode of action of the hormone is probably at least in part related to its suppressive effects on production of tissue collagenase, as indicated by the considerable reduction in collagenolytic activity by living explants of the treated corneas.

[Complication caused by abuse of alkalies in the treatment of ulcers].

The authors report the case of a 57 year old man who had taken for several years large quantities of alkaline drugs to relieve pain due to a gastric ulcer. This man presented acute digestive symptoms, and a confusional syndrome explained by various metabolic disturbance and especially hypercalcemia at 145 mg. Stopping the alkalis permitted within a few days the disappearance of the clinical symptoms and the correction of the laboratory disturbances. In the light of this case, the authors study the main clinical cases which have been described either in their acute form or in their chronic form (Burnett's syndrome). They discuss above all the physiopathology of these manifestations and it seems to them that the hypercalcemia is more important than the alkalosis. It remains to be explained why only a small number of subjects are exposed to these metabolic complications. There seems to be an individual hypersensitivity for under normal conditions, excess calcium is not sufficient to induce hypercalcemia.

[Keratocyte activity during wound healing of alkali-burned cornea].

The proliferation and collagen synthesis of keratocytes during corneal wound healing after alkali-burn were investigated using 3H-thymidine or 3H-proline autoradiography. The effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on keratocytes was also examined. On day 1 after burn, the wounded stroma lacked keratocytes, and keratocytes at the periphery of the wound started to proliferate from the endothelial side. On day 7 and day 14, the population of keratocytes returned to normal. Collagen synthesis activity of the keratocytes was observed from day 7 through day 56, with the highest activity on around day 21. After day 14, keratocytes at the site of epithelial reopening or ulceration started to proliferate again. In the early stage of wound healing more keratocytes incorporated H-thymidine in eyes treated with EGF than those treated without EGF, suggesting that EGF may stimulate the proliferation of keratocytes in the early stage of wound healing.

Prostaglandin-like activity in the aqueous humor following alkali burns.

Following application of 20 mul of 2 N sodium hydroxide to the rabbit cornea, the prostaglandin-like activity in the aqueous humor increased from undetectable levels to around 30 ng, per milliliter, a level which was sustained for up to 24 hours. This increase correlated with the previously reported sustained elevation of intraocular pressure following a 20 mul alkali burn. Pretreatment with aspirin or indomethacin virtually abolished the increase in intraocular pressure and elevation of prostaglandin-like activity in the aqueous humor following a 20 mul burn. Marked ocular hypotension following 50 mul and 100 mul sodium hydroxide burns correlated with very low prostaglandin-like activity in the aqueous humor. The low prostaglandin-like activity probably resulted from alkaline hydrolysis of aqueous prostaglandins and massive cellular death in iris and ciliary body tissues.

Treatment of rabbit corneal alkali wounds with human epidermal growth factor.

The influence on human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) on the healing of a standardized corneal alkali wound was studied in the rabbit. The epithelial, stromal, and endothelial healing processes were followed separately for three weeks using quantitative methods. Epithelial and stromal healing was statistically significantly better with h-EGF (0.05 mg/ml) applied topically three times per day. However, hEGF induced considerable neovascularization, and some of the positive influence could be a result of the new vessel formation.

[Further information on the alkali resistance test].

In 90 patients the alkali resistance (AR) according to Burckhardt was measured on the back of the hand and on the thigh. Subjects with healthy skin (n = 30) reacted in a normal way. Those with healed hand eczema (n = 30) had a diminished AR in both areas tested; subjects with atopic eczema (n = 30) presented an even more diminished AR. Thus, in this broadened scope, simultaneous determination of AR on the back of the hand and on the thigh with the AR-test seems to be valuable in the recognition of an eczematous disposition.

Increased duodenal alkali load associated with the interdigestive myoelectric complex.

In six healthy volunteers the interdigestive motor activity and the secretory pattern were recorded in the duodenum by open tip catheters and intraluminal titration, respectively. The duodenal part of the interdigestive myoelectric complex (IDMEC) was regularly associated with a significantly increased alkali load to the duodenum amounting to 2.4 +/- 0.4 mmol per IDMEC. Thus, the intestinal "housekeeper" function of the IDMEC may be brought about by a coupled action of propagated motility and flushing secretion.
