Agrarian change and labour migration in the Sierra of Ecuador.

"Among the effects produced in the Sierra of Ecuador by the programme of land reforms launched in 1964 was a reduction in the incomes from small-scale farming. At the same time, the growth of productive employment in urban areas was insufficient to provide round-the-year work to the fast growing army of jobseekers. Analysis of the agrarian structure and migration patterns before and after 1964 suggests that it was primarily this combination of circumstances that produced a pronounced shift towards short-term rather than permanent migration, thereby providing industry and services with the labour they needed while avoiding the disadvantages of severe urban overpopulation."

Entry of metastatic malignant cells into the circulation from a subcutaneously growing myelogenous tumor.

The initial stage of metastasis formation, i.e., the entry of metastatic cells from a malignant subcutaneously growing myelogenous tumor into the circulation, was observed by means of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in Long-Evans rats. The transmural passage of malignant cells occurred through the walls of intact venules within the tumor. The malignant cell penetrated the endothelial cell body by making a temporary migration pore. The migration pore closed after the malignant cell entered the vascular lumen. The endothelial vascular lining remained continuous. The entry of malignant cells into the circulation was not the result of the general invasive and destructive properties of malignant tumor cells, but the consequence of a specific action of the tumor cells on the abluminal plasma membrane of the endothelium.

[A case of bloody sputum due to the migration of a temporary cardiac pacing lead into the bronchus].

A 60-year-old man with bloody sputum was admitted to our institute. Prior to the present admission, he had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery (GABG) at our institute 20 month earlier. The fiber optic bronchoscopy findings showed the cause of bleeding to be due to the migration of a post surgical temporary myocardial pacing lead which had been cut off at skin level after a CABG. Under general anesthesia we thus removed this migrated lead using both a fiber optic bronchoscope and forceps. The wire lead was easily removed and the patient has since suffered no more instances of bloody sputum.

Buckling of the tethering catheter causes migration of a temporary caval filter to the right atrium.

AIM: To report problems in the tethering catheter shaft of the Tempofilter, temporary caval filter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two cases are reported where the tethering catheter shaft of the Tempofilter buckled within the jugular vein. RESULTS: Buckling of the tethering shaft caused cephalic migration of the filter into the right atrium. Both filters were uneventfully removed without adverse sequelae. CONCLUSION: These cases demonstrate another mechanism of tethering shaft shortening which results in unexpected migration of the filter. This device is potentially dangerous because of the liability of the tethering cather to buckle at or near the insertion site with cephalic migration of the filter. Improvements in the tethering catheter mechanism need to be made before further patient usage.

A temporary equilibrium model for international migration.

"This paper is concerned with the existence of temporary equilibria of migration with an overlapping generation structure and analyzes some of its properties. In the first part of the paper sufficient conditions for the existence of a temporary equilibrium of migration (in a given period) are given. In the second part some interesting properties of migration equilibria are analyzed. In particular the effects of differing degrees of information of the individuals on migration equilibria are investigated. Furthermore, it is shown that incomplete information alone suffices to induce migration flows even between countries that can be regarded as 'identical' from an economic point of view."

Asymmetric information and the brain drain.

"Within an asymmetric information framework, we investigate the effects of subsidies for return [to developing countries] when the size of the foreign student population is endogenous. Given the stability condition and the assumption that the education system is effective in the home country, we show that subsidies for return always act to improve the average ability of returning Ph.D.s but the impact upon the number of emigrants is ambiguous."

People movements between Australia and Asian-Pacific nations: trends, issues and prospects.

"This article examines the growth and diversification of...permanent, long and short-term movements of people from Asia and the Pacific and the growth in immigrant and local-born Australians departing Australia to live and work in Asia. The occasional controversies surrounding the growth of Asian arrivals and Australia's current push to integrate with the booming Asian economies are examined. The article concludes with a general discussion of the economic, social, cultural, and international consequences of the two-way movements of people between Australia and its Asian and Pacific neighbors."

[Immigration to Venezuela].

Immigration to Venezuela is examined using census data with the focus on the period 1971-1981. A brief overview of trends since the beginning of the twentieth century is first presented. The analysis indicates that "immigration to Venezuela is clearly of a short-term nature. Flows follow job opportunities and adjust to the labour market and to the financial capacity of the exchange market. The large increase of migratory movements to Venezuela in the 1970's is characterized by a diversification of their places of origin and by a greater instability. To a large extent, the migrants are illegal, especially those coming from Colombia and the Caribbean islands. Because of the crisis of the early 1980's, which is now worsened by the down trend of both oil prices and the U.S. dollar, Venezuela has become less attractive to immigrants, particularly from neighbouring countries." The authors observe that migrants in Venezuela are not well integrated and may depart, disrupting the labor supply in certain technical and specialized occupations (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

Adaptation of migrants or survival of the fittest? A Brazilian case.

The author attempts "to interpret the evolution of socioeconomic characteristics among internal migrants in Brazil with increasing duration of residence in destination areas." The relationship between the observed improvement in the socioeconomic conditions of migrants with increasing length of residence and return migration of the poorer, less successful migrants is examined

Policy aspects of development and individual mobility: migration and circulation from Ecuador's rural Sierra.

"Individual out-migration and out-circulation from Ecuador's rural Sierra during the period 1974-1982 are jointly examined to identify differences in each process. Personal attributes operate similarly, but place characteristics associated with development do not. Particular attention is given to land reform policies and related occurrences as forces of regional change, which in turn affect population movements. Also highlighted is the importance of place knowledge, particularly in drawing substantively informed conclusions from statistical analyses of data with broad geographic coverage."
