Differential social perception and attribution of intergroup violence: testing the lower limits of sterotyping of blacks.

In a modified 4 X 4 factorial design with race (black-white) of the harm-doer and race (black-white) of the victim as the major factors, the phenomenon of differential social perception of intergroup violence was established. While subjects, observing a videotape of purported ongoing ineraction occuring in another room, labeled an act (ambiguous shove) as more violent when it was performed by a black than when the same act was perpetrated by a white. That is, the concept of violence was more accessible when viewing a black than when viewing a white committing the same act. Causal attributions were also found to be divergent. Situation attributions were preferred when the harm-doer was white, and person (dispositional) attributions were preferred in the black-protagonist conditions. The results are discussed in terms of perceptual threshold, sterotypy, and attributional biases.

The dark side of self- and social perception: black uniforms and aggression in professional sports.

Black is viewed as the color of evil and death in virtually all cultures. With this association in mind, we were interested in whether a cue as subtle as the color of a person's clothing might have a significant impact on his or her behavior. To test this possibility, we examined whether professional football and ice hockey teams that wear black uniforms are more aggressive than those that wear nonblack uniforms. An analysis of the penalty records of the National Football League and the National Hockey League indicate that teams with black uniforms in both sports ranked near the top of their leagues in penalties throughout the period of study. On those occasions when a team switched from nonblack to black uniforms, the switch was accompanied by an immediate increase in penalties. The results of two laboratory experiments indicate that this finding can be attributed to both social perception and self-perception processes--that is, to the biased judgments of referees and to the increased aggressiveness of the players themselves. Our discussion focuses on the theoretical implications of these data for an understanding of the variable, or "situated," nature of the self.

Social perceptions of the effects of Down syndrome facial surgery: a school-based study of ratings by normal adolescents.

This study examines how 277 normal adolescents from five Israeli schools perceive the Down syndrome face before and after plastic surgery. A seven-point Likert scale was used to rate slides of normal and Down syndrome faces on four dimensions. Down syndrome patients were seen as less attractive, intelligent, good-hearted, and socially appealing than normal individuals. The slides were in nonapparent order and contained preoperative and 1-year postoperative views of eight plastic surgical patients. Paired t tests were used to examine operative changes, and all four dimensions showed overall postoperative improvement (p less than 0.001), but case-to-case variation was considerable. A linear relationship was found between change in appearance ratings and change in intelligence ratings. Findings suggest that when improvements in facial appearance are realized, peer normal social perceptions of the Down syndrome child may be enhanced. The relationship between school placement, intellectual level, and surgical decision making is discussed.

Multiple audience problem: a strategic communication perspective on social perception.

Examined how communicators send mixed messages containing an explicit surface content and a covert hidden content. In Study 1, Ss wrote constrained essays presenting either an introverted or extraverted personality. Although authors reported manipulating essay credibility and readers reported relying on credibility to make their judgments, readers succumbed to correspondence bias. In Studies 2 and 3, Ss again prepared either constrained essays (Study 2) or constrained videotapes (Study 3) and included in them a hidden message that would be understood by only their friends but not by strangers. Observers then read these essays or watched these videotapes. Friends detected and decoded the hidden messages, whereas strangers did not. We discuss these findings in terms of social perception and strategic communication.

Social perception deficits after traumatic brain injury: interaction between emotion recognition, mentalizing ability, and social communication.

Thirty-four adults with severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and 34 matched control participants were asked to interpret videotaped conversational exchanges. Study participants were asked to judge the speakers' emotions, the speakers' beliefs (first-order theory of mind), what the speakers intended their conversational partners to believe (second-order theory of mind), and what they meant by remarks that were sincere or literally untrue (i.e., a lie or sarcastic retort). The TBI group had marked difficulty judging most facets of social information. They could recognize speaker beliefs only when this information was explicitly provided. In general, emotion recognition and first-order theory of mind judgments were not related to the ability to understand social (conversational) inference, whereas second-order theory of mind judgments were related to that ability.

Developmental deficits in social perception in autism: the role of the amygdala and fusiform face area.

Autism is a severe developmental disorder marked by a triad of deficits, including impairments in reciprocal social interaction, delays in early language and communication, and the presence of restrictive, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. In this review, it is argued that the search for the neurobiological bases of the autism spectrum disorders should focus on the social deficits, as they alone are specific to autism and they are likely to be most informative with respect to modeling the pathophysiology of the disorder. Many recent studies have documented the difficulties persons with an autism spectrum disorder have accurately perceiving facial identity and facial expressions. This behavioral literature on face perception abnormalities in autism is reviewed and integrated with the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) literature in this area, and a heuristic model of the pathophysiology of autism is presented. This model posits an early developmental failure in autism involving the amygdala, with a cascading influence on the development of cortical areas that mediate social perception in the visual domain, specifically the fusiform "face area" of the ventral temporal lobe. Moreover, there are now some provocative data to suggest that visual perceptual areas of the ventral temporal pathway are also involved in important ways in representations of the semantic attributes of people, social knowledge and social cognition. Social perception and social cognition are postulated as normally linked during development such that growth in social perceptual skills during childhood provides important scaffolding for social skill development. It is argued that the development of face perception and social cognitive skills are supported by the amygdala-fusiform system, and that deficits in this network are instrumental in causing autism.

Memory and vigilance training to improve social perception in schizophrenia.

Previous research has suggested that social cue recognition in schizophrenia may be significantly associated with visual vigilance and verbal memory. Therefore, we predicted that subjects who participated in a cognitive rehabilitation program that incorporated vigilance and memory training strategies would show significantly better social cue recognition than subjects participating in vigilance training alone. Forty subjects with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were randomly assigned to either a vigilance-alone or a vigilance-plus-memory training condition. Results showed that subjects in the vigilance-plus-memory condition were able to identify social cues in the videotaped training materials significantly better than subjects in the vigilance-alone condition. This difference was evident in an independent measure of social cue recognition and was present at a 48 h follow-up. Implications for future development of cognitive rehabilitation for schizophrenia were discussed.

Aesthetic surgery: effects of rhinoplasty on the social perception of patients by others.

Based on contemporary social psychological theory and research, the aesthetic appeal of one's physical appearance can have considerable influence on others--on social attraction, attitudes, attributions, and actions, which in turn can affect one's psychosocial experiences and development. From this perspective, the present controlled experiment represents a modified and extended replication of recent research testing the hypothesis that aesthetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty produce improvements in physical attractiveness that foster more favorable personality attributions by others. The hypothesis was largely supported--for male and female perceivers of patients of both sexes and various ages. The implications and limitations of these findings as well as the directions for further fruitful investigation are discussed.

Correlation of low back pain with functional status, general health perception, social participation, subjective happiness, and patient satisfaction.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional and epidemiologic study investigated low back pain. OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation among outcome measures for low back pain, including sciatica, according to a proposed low back pain-related model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Various outcome measures are used in low back pain research: pain, functional status, generic health status, and patient satisfaction. Correlation among these measures has been unclear. METHODS: For this study, 816 subjects (369 men and 447 women; average age, 62 years) who underwent an adult medical examination. The patients were interviewed concerning their personal background, severity of low back pain and sciatica, functional status, general health perception, social participation, subjective happiness, and patient satisfaction. The correlation among these measures was analyzed systematically using path analysis based on a low back pain-related model hypothesizing that low back pain and sciatica worsen functional status and general health perception and then affect social participation, subjective happiness, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: Restriction of functional status was found to be the most closely correlated with severity of low back pain. A decrease in physical health was most closely correlated with restriction of function. Social participation, subjective happiness, and patient satisfaction were closely correlated with physical health status. There was a significant correlation among outcome measures concerning physical health, which was consistent with a low back pain-related model. CONCLUSIONS: The outcome measures concerning physical health in this study were found to be correlated significantly, consistent with the proposed low back pain-related model.

The relative salience of sex, race, age, and glasses in children's social perception.

The relative salience for children of various human facial features was examined in five experiments. The first two experiments were designed to validate the conclusion from previous research (McGraw, Durm, & Patterson, 1983) that the sex of adult faces is more salient than their race or age, and that the presence or absence of glasses is extremely unsalient. Children's spontaneous verbal descriptions confirmed the salience hierarchy of sex, race, age, and glasses. Experiments 3, 4, and 5 were designed to ascertain whether the salience of race, glasses, and age would be stable across potentially relevant subject and task-stimuli differences. There were some salience asymmetries; most notably, black skin was more salient than white skin for both Black and White children. In general, the results of these studies indicate that sex, race, age, and glasses represents a naturally occurring salience hierarchy that is reliably present among children of preschool and early elementary school age.

[Influence of social perceptions and practices on the use of bednets in the malaria control programme in Ivory Coast (West Africa)].

The National Malaria Programme in Ivory Coast has encountered difficulty in winning public acceptance of insecticide-treated bednets. We speculate that resistance to the use of bednets could be rooted in social perceptions, beliefs and practices in the communities. The purpose of this study was to identify sociocultural and environmental factors that could be used to support promotion strategies and acceptance of impregnated bednets in Ivory Coast. Survey findings confirmed that bednets were not in widespread use among the population (25%). The most widely used methods were burning mosquito coils (50%) and indoor spraying (31%). Use of impregnated bednets was low (6%). Most survey respondents (73%) indicated initial appreciation for the effectiveness of bednets in protecting against mosquitoes as a nuisance. However only 9% of respondents thought that impregnated bednets provided protection against malaria although they did not necessarily use them. Design was a determinant factor for the use, and even acceptance, of bednets. The population want rectangular, permanently impregnated bednets large enough to accommodate at least 2 persons. Cost was a major obstacle to wider use by the population. According to our data the best price for the population would be between 2000 and 2500 FCFA as compared to the current price of 3500 FCFA in Ivory Coast.
