The effect of endodontic solutions on resorcinol-formalin paste in teeth.

This study determined if any of six endodontic solutions would have a softening effect on resorcinol-formalin paste in extracted teeth, and if there were any differences in the solvent action between these solutions. Forty-nine single-rooted extracted teeth were decoronated 2 mm coronal to the CEJ, and the roots sectioned apically to a standard length of 15 mm. Canals were prepared to a 12 mm WL and a uniform size with a #7 Parapost drill. Teeth were then mounted in a cylinder ring with acrylic. The resorcinol-formalin mixture was placed into the canals and was allowed to set for 60 days in a humidor. The solutions tested were 0.9% sodium chloride, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, chloroform, Endosolv R (Endosolv R), 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Seven samples per solution were tested and seven samples using water served as controls. One drop of the solution was placed over the set mixture in the canal, and the depth of penetration of a 1.5-mm probe was measured at 2, 5, 10, and 20 min using a dial micrometer gauge. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed a difference in penetration between the solutions at 10 min (p = 0.04) and at 20 min (p = 0.0004). At 20 min, Endosolv R, had significantly greater penetration than 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (p = 0.0033) and chloroform (p = 0.0018); however, it was not significantly better than the control (p = 0.0812). Although Endosolv R, had statistically superior probe penetration at 20 min, the softening effect could not be detected clinically at this time.

Azoarcus anaerobius sp. nov., a resorcinol-degrading, strictly anaerobic, denitrifying bacterium.

A strictly anaerobic, nitrate-reducing bacterium, strain LuFRes1, was isolated using resorcinol as sole source of carbon and energy. The strain reduced nitrate to dinitrogen gas and was not able to use oxygen as an alternative electron acceptor. Cells were catalase-negative but superoxide-dismutase-positive. Resorcinol was completely oxidized to CO2. 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed a high similarity with sequences of Azoarcus evansii and Azoarcus tolulyticus. Strain LuFRes1T (= DSM 12081T) is described as a new species of the genus Azoarcus, Azoarcus anaerobius.

Embryotoxic effects of acrolein, methacrylates, guanidines and resorcinol on three day chicken embryos.

Acrolein, four methacrylates, two guanidine compounds and resorcinol were tested for embryotoxicity on three day chicken embryos. The most potent chemical was acrolein, with the ED50 0.05 mumol per egg for the total effect, including deaths and malformations. The substances next in potency were N,N'-di-o-tolyl-guanidine and N,N-diphenylguanidine, with ED50 values 0.17 and 0.20 mumol per egg, respectively. Resorcinol and the methacrylates had ED50 values ranging from 2.4 to 22.0 mumol per egg. Acrolein, diphenylguanidine, tetrahydrofururylmethacrylate and trimethylolpropanetrimethacrylate caused the largest amounts of malformed embryos.

Quantitative structure-activity relationships: the Van't Hoff heats of transfer of resorcinol monoethers from water to n-octanol.

The partition coefficients of resorcinol and some resorcinol monoalkyl-ethers from water to n-octanol have been measured as a function of temperature. These data are used to evaluate delta G, delta H and delta S for the solute transfer process. The data suggest direct calorimetric measurement of these parameters should be performed. Correlation with calorimetrically determined 'biological response' will permit a more detailed and precise commentary upon the quantitative structure-activity relationships for these compounds.

Effect of glucocorticoids on the response of airway smooth muscle to catecholamine and resorcinol beta-agonists.

The influence of hydrocortisone (11 beta, 17 alpha, 21-trihydroxy-pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione) or of methylprednisolone (6 alpha-methyl-11 beta, 17 alpha-21-trihydroxy-1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione) on the response of airway smooth muscle to a variety of beta-adrenergic bronchodilators was evaluated using incubated guinea pig tracheal rings, preconstricted with histamine. The adrenergic agonists chosen for this study included the nonselective beta 1- and beta 2-catecholamine, isoproterenol, the selective beta 2-catecholamine, rimiterol, and the selective beta 2-resorcinols, fenoterol and terbutaline. When the incubated rings were pretreated with 10-50 micrograms/mL of the steroids, there was a significant enhancement in smooth muscle sensitivity and reactivity to rimiterol and isoproterenol. Tracheal response to fenoterol or terbutaline, on the other hand, was not altered by the glucocorticoids. When used alone, neither steroid exerted an inotropic influence on the tracheal smooth muscle. The results of our study indicate that glucocorticoid enhancement of adrenergic bronchodilators is selective for catecholamines, and not for resorcinols.

Induction of apoptosis on human hepatocarcinoma cell lines by an alkyl resorcinol isolated from Lithraea molleoides.

AIM: To study the mechanism of cytotoxicity of a new active 5-alkyl resorcinol [1, 3-dihydroxy-5- (tridec-4', 7'-dienyl) benzene] isolated from Lithraea molleoides leaves on liver tumor cells. METHODS: Human hepatocarcinoma cell lines (HepG2 and Hep3B) in culture were treated with inhibitory concentrations, 50% of the compound, for 24 h. The induction of apoptosis was detected in treated cells by analysis of DNA fragmentation, DNA content, and acridine orange and propidium iodide staining. RESULTS: After 24 h of 5-alkyl resorcinol treatment, both cell lines showed: (1) the typical morphological alterations of apoptosis; (2) DNA fragmentation, detected by laddering and appearance of a subG0 population by flow cytometry; and (3) condensed and fragmented nuclei by acridine orange-propidium iodide staining. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, this compound exerts its cytotoxic effect in both hepatocellular cell lines through apoptotic cell death. For Hep3B, cells with mutated p53 and Fas, apoptosis would proceed by p53- or Fas-independent pathways.

Pharmacokinetics of resorcinol in the rat.

Pharmacokinetic data on resorcinol were obtained from studies in the rat. The drug, administered subcutaneously in an aqueous solution, rapidly cleared plasma vir urine and did not accumulate in tissues. In the urine, the major metabolite of resorcinol was the glucuronide. Repeated dosing for 30 days with maximum tolerated daily doses of 100 mg/kg did not alter pharmacokinetic parameters, nor did it cause overt toxic signs or adverse reactions. The animals' body weight, blood values, levels of serum T3 and T4' and the gross and microscopic appearance of the thyroid gland and spinal cord remained within normal limits throughout the study.

Resorcinols and catechols: a clinical study of cross-sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: All allergic contact dermatitis caused by Philodendron species is common in the Hawaiian islands, and Toxicodendron species are the most common causes of plant-induced allergic contact dermatitis in North America. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of cross-sensitivity between these plant species. METHODS: Alkylresorcinols (pentadec[en]yl and heptadec[en]ylresorcinols) were isolated and purified from extracts of Hawaiian-grown Philodendron scandens subspecies scandens and Philodendron lacerum. Alkylcatechols (mixtures of pentadec[en]ylcatechols from an extract of Toxicodendron radicans (poison ivy) were obtained from the Division of Biologics Standards (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). Seventeen patients from Hawaii and 8 patients from northern California were skin tested with 5 microL (concentrations, 1 to .001 mg/mL) of each allergen applied to the flexor forearm. The test sites remained open and were graded at 72, 96, and 144 hours. All 8 patients from California were naive to Philodendron species, and 8 patients from Hawaii were naive to Toxicodendron species. RESULTS: No cross-reactivity occurred in patients who were Philodendron sensitive and Toxicodendron naive when tested to the homologous Toxicodendron catechols. Conversely, with one exception, no cross-reactivity occurred in patients who were Toxicodendron sensitive and Philodendron naive when tested to homologous Philodendron naive when tested to homologous Philodendron resorcinols. CONCLUSION: Patients who are sensitive to Philodendron species (or other resorcinol-containing plants) may not necessarily be cross-sensitive to Toxicodendron species and vice versa.

Symptomatic caliceal diverticula treated with extraperitoneal laparoscopic marsupialization fulguration and gelatin resorcinol formaldehyde glue obliteration.

PURPOSE: The treatment of symptomatic stone filled caliceal diverticula has evolved from open surgery to less invasive procedures, such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous techniques, retrograde ureteroscopy and laparoscopy, but it remains controversial. We describe a laparoscopic technique for the management of symptomatic caliceal diverticula. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An extraperitoneal laparoscopic procedure was done in 3 women with symptomatic caliceal diverticula. Watertight obliteration of the diverticular cavity was achieved without suturing, using gelatin resorcinol formaldehyde glue. RESULTS: Average operating time was 80 minutes, including ureteral catheterization. All patients became stone-free, there were no complications and average hospital stay was 6.6 days. At 6-month followup the patients remained asymptomatic with no diverticula or stone recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Retroperitoneoscopy allows safe access to caliceal diverticula regardless of location, and permits complete removal of stone and fulguration of the diverticular neck. Gelatin resorcinol formaldehyde glue minimizes the risk of urinoma formation, and provides a simple, quick and safe alternative for nephrotomy closure.

SAXS Study on Gelation Process in Preparation of Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Aerogel.

RF aerogels were prepared by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in a slightly basic aqueous solution and supercritical drying with carbon dioxide. The aerogels were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and density measurements. A small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique was applied to the gelation process of RF hydrogels. The structure formation of the hydrogels during the sol-gel transition was revealed by applying Guinier and power-law equations to the SAXS data. At the initial stage of the synthesis of RF hydrogels, small clusters of ca 2 nm consisting of branched polymeric species formed, showing a mass fractal dimension. Then the clusters aggregated and formed particles of ca 3-6 nm. These particles showed a surface fractal dimension. The hydrogel structure was fixed by gelation and the particles grew to ca 4-7 nm. Finally their surface became smooth by aging. The influence of the amount of resorcinol, basic catalyst, and water used in the polycondensation on the porous structures of the aerogels was explained by the structure formation model proposed. Influence of Gelation Temperature and Catalysts on the Mesoporous Structure of Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Aerogels.

Resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) hydrogels were synthesized by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde using a few kinds of catalysts at a gelation temperature of 238 or 332 K. RF aerogels were prepared by supercritical drying with carbon dioxide. The aerogels were characterized by nitrogen adsorption. The experimental results suggest that the gelation temperature does not greatly influence the porous properties and that sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrogencarbonate can be used as catalysts in the preparation of the aerogels. Bi-, Tri-, and Tetranuclear Metallomacrocycles Constructed by Metal-Directed Reactions Involving Resorcinol or Hydroquinone or by Addition of Octahedral Metal Centers to Tetrahexylcalix[4]resorcinarene: X-ray Crystal Structure of syn,syn-[Mo{HB(3,5-Me(2)C(3)HN(2))(3)}(NO)(1,4-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3).

The reaction between [Mo(NO)(Tp)I(2)] [Tp(-) = hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate] and tetrahexylcalix[4]resorcinarene (resH(8)) affords a mixture of metalated macrocycles from which [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(2)(resH(4))], [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(3)(resH(2))], and [{Mo(NO)(Tp)}(4)(res)] can be isolated. In the solid state the tetrametalated compound can act as a host for CH(2)Cl(2) which forms a weak hydrogen bond to the oxygen of a coordinated nitric oxide: H.O1 2.47 Å, angle C-H.O1 161 degrees. Direct reaction of [Mo(NO)(Tp)I(2)] [Tp(-) = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate] with resorcinol itself offers a route to the related resorcinol-based tetrametallomacrocycle [Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,3-O(2)C(6)H(4))](4). This reaction also produces the cyclic trimer [Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,3-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3) together with some cyclic dimer. A similar reaction involving 1,4-dihydroxybenzene and [M(NO)(Tp)I(2)] (M = Mo, W) also affords cyclic trimers and cyclic tetramers, but in this case, cyclic dimers are not formed. It has been possible to separate the single isomers syn,syn-[Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,4-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3), anti,syn-[M(NO)(Tp)(1,4-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3) (M = Mo, W), anti,syn-[Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,3-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3), and anti,syn,syn-[Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,3-O(2)C(6)H(4))](4). The crystal structure of syn,syn-[Mo(NO)(Tp)(1,4-O(2)C(6)H(4))](3) has been determined: C(63)H(78)B(3)Mo(3)N(21)O(9); monoclinic space group P2(1)/a; a = 16.269(10), b = 35.31(3), c = 16.056(10) Å; beta = 97.59(2) degrees; Z = 4. The coordination geometry at the molybdenum atoms is essentially octahedral. The trimer does not show 3-fold symmetry, the triangle of molybdenum atoms having two long edges, 8.485(3) and 8.703(3) Å, and one short edge of 7.886(3) Å. These distances are paralleled by the corresponding distances between the nitrosyl oxygen atoms, 6.177(12), 6.526(12), and 3.729(12) Å, respectively. The electrochemical properties of the metallomacrocycles reveal differing patterns of redox potentials depending upon the number and geometric arrangement of metal centers in the macrocyclic structure.

Novel [2 + 2] photocycloaddition-induced rearrangement of bichromophoric naphthalene-tethered resorcinol ethers.

The first examples of sequential photocycloaddition-rearrangement reactions of naphthalene-tethered resorcinol ethers are described. Bichromophoric aromatic compounds with naphthalene and resorcinol ether moieties were irradiated in the presence/absence of a small amount of acid to give the corresponding cycloaddition-rearrangement products. From the determination of quantum yields, steady-state fluorescence spectral studies, and fluorescence lifetime measurements, the mechanism of this novel photoinduced multistep reaction was elucidated to involve the initial intramolecular exciplex formation, followed by the intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition between the two aromatic rings and the subsequent acid-catalyzed skeletal rearrangement of the resulting cyclobutane derivative leading to the final products.

Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels.

In this article, we report a detailed study of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) aerogels prepared under different processing conditions, [resorcinol]/[catalyst] (R/C) ratios in the starting sol-gel solutions, using continuous flow hyperpolarized (129)Xe NMR in combination with solid-state (13)C and two-dimensional wide-line separation (2D-WISE) NMR techniques. The degree of polymerization and the mobility of the cross-linking functional groups in RF aerogels are examined and correlated with the R/C ratios. The origin of different adsorption regions is evaluated using both coadsorption of chloroform and 2D EXSY (129)Xe NMR. A hierarchical set of Xe exchange processes in RF aerogels is found using 2D EXSY (129)Xe NMR. The exchange of Xe gas follows the sequence (from fastest to slowest): mesopores with free gas, gas in meso- and micropores, free gas with micropores, and, finally, among micropore sites. The volume-to-surface-area (V(g)/S) ratios for aerogels are measured for the first time without the use of geometric models. The V(g)/S parameter, which is related both to the geometry and the interconnectivity of the pore space, has been found to correlate strongly with the R/C ratio and exhibits an unusually large span: an increase in the R/C ratio from 50 to 500 results in about a 5-fold rise in V(g)/S.

Effect of Phloroglucinol and Resorcinol on the Clingstone Peach Polyphenol Oxidase-catalyzed Oxidation of 4-Methylcatechol.

Phloroglucinol and resorcinol are not substrates for clingstone peach (Prunus persica) polyphenol oxidase, but they react with 4-methyl-o-quinone, produced either enzymatically or nonenzymatically, to give an intense red or red-brown color with a maximal absorption at about 470 nanometers. Several colored products were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the reaction by two-dimensional thin layer chromatography. Based on thin layer chromatographic and spectral studies of the enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions, polyphenol oxidase does not play a role in the reaction between 4-methyl-o-quinone and phloroglucinol, resorcinol, d-catechin, or orcinol. In such reactions, the function of polyphenol oxidase is the formation of 4-methyl-o-quinone which then reacts nonenzymatically with the above phenols. Activation energies of both enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions were determined.

[Resorcinol-spectrophotometric method for the determination of fructose in mustard leaf's amylose].

A method using seliwanoff reaction is proposed for the determination of fructose in the amylose of mustard leaves. Fructose reacts with resorcinol forming a red compound with a maximum absorption at 473 nm. The calibration curve is linear over the range of 0-83 micrograms.mL-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9998. The content of fructose in the amylose of mustard leaves is found to be 11.41%. Quantitative analysis used for the fructose of syrup include such as volumetric analysis, then layer chromatography, polarimetry, high pressure liquid chromatography and spectrophotometric analysis. According to different color-developing agents, spectrophotometric analysis may be classified as carbazole method, ammonium molybdate way and resorcinol way etc. reported by foreign papers is hard to operate and colored complex is unstable.
