Integrated Fenton's reagent-coagulation/flocculation process for the treatment of cork processing wastewaters.

In the present work two methods were tested for the treatment of cork processing wastewaters. In a first phase, a coagulation/flocculation method was applied using FeCl3 as flocculating agent and Ca(OH)2 as base-precipitant. One cycle of the treatment (1000 ppm of FeCl3) reduced chemical oxygen demand (COD), total polyphenols and aromatic compounds of the effluent by 45, 71 and 58%, respectively. Two cycles of treatment (2x 1000 ppm of FeCl3) increase these reductions until values of 67, 92 and 85%, respectively. In a second phase, an integrated Fenton-coagulation/flocculation process was applied (this second method only requires the addition of H2O2). One cycle of the integrated process (1000 ppm of FeCl3 and 0.5 mol/l of H2O2) reduced the COD, total polyphenols and aromatic compounds of the effluent by 74, 99 and 98%, respectively, which supposes a considerable improvement compared with the first method.

Fenton oxidation of cork cooking wastewater--overall kinetic analysis.

In the present work, the possibility of using chemical oxidation through Fenton's reagent for the pre-treatment of cork cooking wastewaters was exploited. Aiming both the selection of the best operating conditions (pH, Fe2+:H2O2 ratio and initial H2O2 concentration) and the evaluation of the overall reaction kinetics, trials were performed in a batch reactor. Operating at pH = 3.2, H2O2 concentration = 10.6 g/L and Fe2+:H2O2 ratio = 1:5 (by weight), about 66.4% of total organic carbon (TOC), 87.3% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 70.2% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) were removed and an increase of the BOD5/COD ratio from 0.27 to 0.63 was achieved. In the temperature range 20-50 degrees C, the best performance was obtained at 30 degrees C. The kinetic study was undertaken at different initial TOC concentrations and temperatures. Overall kinetics can be described by a second-order followed by a zero-order rate equation and the apparent kinetic constants at 30 degrees C are k = 2.3 x 10(-4) L/mg min and k0 = 26.0 mg/L min, respectively. The experiments performed at different temperatures confirmed the global kinetic model and allowed to calculate the global activation energy for the second-order reaction (70.7 kJ/mol).

Purification of cork processing wastewaters by ozone, by activated sludge, and by their two sequential applications.

Wastewaters generated in the cork processing industry were treated in continuous reactors by means of single treatments separately-a chemical ozonation and an activated sludge system-and then by both sequential processes-ozonation followed by aerobic degradation, and aerobic degradation followed by ozonation. The removals obtained in the ozonation alone were 12-54%, 65-81%, and 55-89% for the COD, total phenolics, and absorbance at 254 nm, respectively, while the consumed ozone yield ranged from 40% to 61%, and the biodegradability (BOD(5)/COD) varied from an initial 0.60 to final values between 0.68 and 0.93. The optimum hydraulic retention time and ozone partial pressure were 3 h and 3 kPa, respectively. The stoichiometric ratio was 0.56 g of organic substrate degraded per g of ozone consumed, while the rate constants obtained for the ozone disappearance and for the organic matter degradation were 4490 L g COD(-1) h(-1) and 1970 L g O(3)(-1)h(-1) respectively. The presence of hydrogen peroxide or UV radiation in addition to ozone increased the values of organic matter removal as well as the stoichiometric ratio and the rate constants. The aerobic treatment by the activated sludge system yielded COD removals between 13% and 37% for hydraulic retention times between 24 and 96 h, and the Contois model gave values of q(max)=0.14 g COD g VSS(-1)h(-1) and K(1)=22.6 g COD g VSS(-1) for the main kinetic parameters. The sequential processes increased the substrate removal efficiencies in comparison with the individual processes. These enhancements were greater in the aerobic degradation-ozonation sequence than in the ozonation-aerobic degradation sequence.

Search for the contamination source of butyltin compounds in wine: agglomerated cork stoppers.

A possible butyltin contamination source in wine was studied in this paper. Agglomerated cork stoppers, which were produced in Portugal, Spain, and Italy, used in wine bottles were examined. The domestic cork products, cork granules, and mucus used for cork products were also analyzed. The levels of mono- and dibutyltin compounds in corks were found in the range from <0.0024 to 3.3 and from <0.0029 to 6.7 microg of Sn/g, respectively. A low level of tributyltin contamination was also found in 2 of 31 tested samples. The presence of butyltin compounds in agglomerated cork stoppers was confirmed by GC-MS. Experimental results indicated that all overseas agglomerated cork stoppers studied contained mono- and/or dibutyltins. Butyltins were not detected in cork granules, mucus, most of the natural cork stoppers, and domestic agglomerated cork products. The concentrations of mono- and dibutyltins increased with the time in a 30-day experiment, showing that butyltin compounds can leach from agglomerated cork to the wine. When the butyltin concentrations in wine samples were compared with their levels in the corresponding agglomerated cork stoppers, a correlation was found. The potential harm of such food contamination was evaluated by the toxic research of butyltin compounds using Daphnia sp. as the experimental model.

Treatment of cork process wastewater by a successive chemical-physical method.

In cork processing, the operation of boiling the raw cork generates large volumes of wastewater which are more often than not released directly into the environment untreated. Even when the wastewater is treated, this is usually by retention in evaporation ponds. This procedure, however, causes bad odors and may pollute surface water and groundwater. The present study evaluates a physicochemical method involving Fenton oxidation and coagulation/flocculation for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total polyphenols (TP), and aromatic compounds (A) from cork manufacturing process wastewater. The experimental variables studied were the dosages of iron salts (from 0.001 to 0.2 mol/L) and hydrogen peroxide (between 0.06 and 1 mol/L). The integrated Fenton-coagulation/flocculation process reduced the COD of the effluent by from 22% to 85%. The removal of total polyphenols ranged from 4% to 98%, and of aromatic compounds from 2% to 97%. A further two experiments were performed modifying the manner in which the reagents were added, splitting the reagent dose (of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous salt) into two and three fractions. Finally, an economic study was made of the chemical costs deriving from the application of this purification system. The cost of a treatment with an [H2O2](o)/COD(o) ratio of 1.8 g/g (splitting the reagent dose into three fractions) that yields a COD removal of 73% was estimated to be 11.5 euros/m(3) of wastewater.

[The effects of the tangfukang capsules on cytokines of early diabetic nephropathy].

OBJECTIVE: To find out the mechanism of Tangfukang on the diabetic nephropathy(DN). METHOD: A Model of streptorotocin diabetic rats was used. The expressions of the AGEs, ICAM-1, IV-C and FN were observed in renal cortex of diabetic rats with immunohistochemical method. The level of the IL-1 beta in blood serum was measured by radioimmunoassay method and the level of TNF was determined in blood serum by ELISA method. Aminoguanidine was selected as the control medicine which could inhibit the expression of monenzymatic glycosylation end products of protein. All the results were compared to analyze the effect of Tangfukang on monenzymatic glycosylation of protein and cytokine expression in early diabetic nephropathy rats. RESULTS: Both Tangfukang and aminoguanidine significantly decreased the expression of AGEs, but Tangfukang was greatly superior to aminoguanidine in suppressing the expression of cytokine like ICAM-1, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha and the ingredients of extracellular matrix like IV-C, FN. CONCLUSION: It may be the partical mechanism of Tangfukang to suppress the monenzymatic glycosylation of protein and to reduce the expression of cytokine in diabetes. The effect of Tangfukang is superior to that of aminoguanidine.

[Effects on secretory function of rat gonad by Erxian decoction and its disassembled prescriptions].

OBJECTIVE: To explain functions, differences and coordination of three divided combinations of the "Erxian decoction", the famous traditional Chinese formula, on the effective sites of gonad gland at the cell level. METHOD: The effects of Erxian decoction and its main disassembled prescriptions, "Kidney Warming", "Yin Nourishing" and "Chong-ren Adjusting", on the level of testosterone (T) progesterone (P) estradiol (E2), respectively secreted by the primary culture Leydig cell, luteal cell and granulosa cell, were measured by radioimmunoassay. RESULT: (1) Erxian decoction could stimulate the T secretion while its three main disassembled prescriptions would seem no individual promoting effect on the secretion of T. (2) Erxian decoction and the "Kidney Warming" had the stimulating effect on P secretion, and the action of the whole formula being better than that of the "Kidney Warming". (3) Erxian decoction and its main disassembled prescriptions had the stimulating effect on E2 secretion, especially the whole formula. CONCLUSION: Erxian decoction can stimulate the secretion of T of the Leydig cell, P of luteal cell and E2 of granulosa cell. It can be seen that the effect of the whole formula is better than that of its main disassembled prescriptions.

Systemic toxicity following ingestion of the chlorhexidine gluconate solution: a case report.

The purpose of this article is to discuss possible adverse effects and emergency treatments following the ingestion of chlorhexidine (CHX). In this case a dental student (age 25, male) accidentally swallowed one shot of 20% CHX solution, which is equal to 100 shots of the standard 0.2% CHX mouthwash. Clinical emergency treatment included: washing the oral cavity with 30 g of toothpaste, drinking 100 ml of 5% (w/v) alginate syrup and ingestion of 5 g of cork. The following adverse effects were experienced: headache, euphoria, giddiness, blurred vision (duration = 12 h), stomachache, gastric lavage with demulcents (duration = 24 h) and complete loss of taste sensation (duration = 8 h), which recurred during the next 48 h. No change in plasma aminotransferase level was seen. We used basic chemical information about the incompatibilities of CHX for clinical management of unintentional ingestion. It is known that CHX is a cation, and, therefore, first aid in case of intoxication with CHX involves using anionic materials.
