[Comparison of high-pass resolution perimetry and differential light sensitivity perimetry in glaucoma patients].

High-pass resolution perimetry (HRP) enables one to estimate the number of functioning retinal ganglion-cells. We investigated the correlation between HRP and Humphrey Field Analyzer 630 in 35 eyes of 23 primary open-angle glaucoma and 75 eyes of 46 normal-tension glaucoma patients. In a total of 110 eyes, both functional channels and global deviation of HRP were significantly correlated with MD (r = 0.74, p < 0.01: r = -0.71, p < 0.01, respectively). Local deviation of HRP was also significantly correlated with corrected pattern standard deviation (r = 0.77, p < 0.01). These correlations tended to be higher in eyes with more advanced field changes than in those with fewer changes. These results indicate that HRP may be useful for evaluation of glaucomatous visual field abnormalities. The observed discrepancies between the two different methods in early stage glaucoma may be attributable to differences in physiological factors tested in these methods.

Frequency doubling technology perimetry and standard automated perimetry in migraine.

The literature suggests that visual field defects may be more common in people who experience migraine. The Humphrey frequency doubling (FDT) visual field instrument selectively examines the magnocellular visual pathway, but has not previously been used to investigate visual function in migraine. In a masked controlled study we compared Humphrey FDT and Humphrey Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm fields of 25 migraine sufferers with 25 age- and gender-matched controls. Although both mean deviation and pattern standard deviation were a little worse in the migraine group, these differences did not reach statistical significance. There were no inter-eye visual field differences in the migraine group compared with controls. Comparing the mean of all the contrast thresholds in each hemisphere, there were no more inter-hemifield visual field differences in the migraine group compared with controls. There was no significant difference between the migraine and control groups in intra-ocular pressures. The visual field parameters were not correlated with the interval since the last migraine headache, the severity of migraine headache, the duration of migraine headache or the number of migraine headaches per annum. In our data, there was no evidence of visual field deficits, a magnocellular deficit, or indications of glaucomatous pathology.

Agreement between frequency doubling perimetry and static perimetry in eyes with high tension glaucoma and normal tension glaucoma.

AIMS: To investigate the agreement in results between frequency doubling technology (FDT) and the conventional automated static perimeter in eyes with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and high tension glaucoma (HTG). METHODS: 72 eyes of 36 patients, who had two or more experiences with the Humphrey field analyser (HFA) program C30-2, were examined with the screening C-20-1 program of FDT. The result of FDT at each of the 17 stimulus points was graded as one of four categories. 58 out of 76 test points of HFA were assigned to one of the 17 clusters corresponding to FDT test points. Each cluster was represented as the lowest (scotoma of HFA) or the highest (threshold of HFA) probability symbol of total deviation (TD) of the HFA test points included in the cluster. The agreement between scotoma/threshold of HFA and FDT results was evaluated for NTG and HTG. RESULTS: In a total of 65 eyes, the Spearman coefficients between the FDT and HFA (threshold/scotoma of HFA) were 0.599 and 0.515 (p<0.0001), respectively. In the HFA mean deviation matched 20 HTG eyes and 20 NTG eyes, the number of points with abnormal FDT results were 102 and 62 in eyes with HTG and NTG, respectively. The eyes with HTG had more abnormal FDT results than NTG eyes (p=0.0014, Mann-Whitney U test). The kappa coefficient between FDT and threshold of HFA in eyes with HTG and NTG was 0.288 and 0.520, respectively, and the agreement between FDT and scotoma of HFA was 0.480 and 0.439, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The best agreement of the results of FDT and HFA was observed in eyes with NTG using threshold of HFA. The eyes with HTG showed lower agreement with more abnormal points in FDT results, which suggests enough sensitivity of FDT in eyes with NTG, and higher sensitivity of FDT in eyes with HTG.

A comparison of cupola-free perimetry with conventional perimetry: preliminary results.

In the comparison of ten normal and two pathological visual fields, excellent agreement was found between examinations made with Octopus perimeters (types 201 and 500) and a prototype version of a new cupola-free perimeter (CFPP). The examination of a single glaucomatous visual field, however, exhibited an elevated mean defect value with the prototype instrument in comparison with Octopus 201 examinations of the same visual field. Although this difference may be easily explained by long-term fluctuation effects, further investigations based on a broader empirical basis will be required. Based on the results of this preliminary work the following remarks can be made with respect to the cupola-free perimeter: provided that the zero point of the dB scale is chosen appropriately, ie, with a stimulus luminance of about 4,000 asb used as the 0 dB level, the same differential light sensitivity (DLS) values for normal visual fields can be obtained with the CFPP as with all Octopus models (201, 500, 2000). Within the limits of measurement error, the same decrease of DLS was found with the CFPP as obtained using the other perimeters for test locations (of the G1 program), ranging from the center out to an eccentricity of 30 degrees. Thus it appears that the normal values as used in the other Octopus perimeters can also be utilized in this cupola-free instrument within this range.
