Cancer in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia.

Little is known about the impact of cancer and the extent of cancer-related services in Yap. The purpose of this study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, was to document the state of cancer awareness and services in Yap and to prioritize cancer-care needs. Findings suggest that cancer is the leading cause of death in Yap, yet cancer-related awareness, prevention, detection, and treatment services are limited. A number of needs were identified, and an action plan was developed based on five priority areas: 1) establishing a cancer registry; 2) increasing awareness of cancer risk, prevention, and detection; 3) expanding cancer screening and detection programs; 4) expanding cancer-related training opportunities for clinical staff; and 5) purchasing cancer-related equipment & supplies.

Globin genes in Micronesia: origins and affinities of Pacific Island peoples.

DNA polymorphisms and copy-number variants of alpha-, zeta-, and gamma-globin genes have been studied in seven Micronesian island populations and have been compared with those in populations from Southeast Asia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. Micronesians are not significantly different from Polynesians at these loci and appear to be intermediate between Southeast Asians and Melanesians. There is evidence of significant Melanesian input into the Micronesian gene pool and of substantial proto-Polynesian contact with Melanesia.

Development of speech-language-hearing services in Guam and Micronesia.

Even after more than two decades of service delivery by members of this profession, the availability of limited federal funds, and the applicability of federal mandates, services within the region continue to be clearly inadequate. To assure that these inadequacies do not continue indefinitely into the future requires that members of this profession respond to the challenges and overcome the existing barriers and obstacles.

Acedapsone in the prevention of leprosy: field trial in three high prevalence villages in Micronesia.

The 1,659 non-leprous people in a Micronesian population experiencing an annual leprosy incidence rate of about 7/1,000 were offered 15 acedapsone (DADDS) injections during 1967--1970 for leprosy prevention purposes. Subsequent annual surveillance showed an initial cessation of new cases during the 3-year DADDS campaign, followed by a resumption of cases thereafter at a yearly level of about 2/1,000 with a longer pause and slower rise among those who received the full regimen. A secondary wave of cases that has occurred since 1973 among children born after 1968 shows that post-campaign transmission occurred, probably principally from relapsing multibacillary cases with onset before the campaign. Recommendations are made for a balanced, long-term control program with DADDS preventive treatment limited to contacts of multibacillary cases.
