PURPOSE: To determine incidence and distribution of conjunctival epithelial involvement by eyelid sebaceous carcinoma and to make recommendations regarding its management. METHODS: The medical records were reviewed retrospectively on patients with histopathologically confirmed sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelids managed at the Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital. Those tumors with involvement of the conjunctival epithelium were identified and selected for further study. The incidence and distribution of epithelial involvement was determined, based on histopathology of resected tumors and map biopsies. The incidence of metastasis and tumor-related mortality was determined. Based on these findings and personal surgical experience, recommendations are made regarding management of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma with involvement of the conjunctival epithelium. RESULTS: Of 60 patients with sebaceous carcinoma, epithelial involvement of the conjunctiva was identified in 28 (47%). Of the 28 cases, the neoplasm affected the following sites: superior tarsal and fornical conjunctiva in 28 (100%), inferior tarsal conjunctiva in 19 (68%), inferior fornical conjunctiva in 18 (64%), superior bulbar conjunctiva in 19 (68%), and inferior bulbar conjunctiva in 16 (57%). The caruncle was involved in 15 (54%) and the cornea in 11 (39%). Metastasis occurred in 3 of the 28 cases (11%). Map biopsies, combined with cryotherapy, topical chemotherapy, local surgical resection, and orbital exenteration, were used to achieve local control. CONCLUSIONS: Eyelid sebaceous carcinoma was found to exhibit epithelial involvement of the conjunctiva in 47% of cases, predominantly in the superior tarsal and fornical conjunctiva and less often in the inferior tarsal conjunctiva, caruncle, and cornea. Treatment of this condition is challenging, and map biopsy, cryotherapy, topical chemotherapy, and newer surgical methods are being used more often by our group.
"Over the last 150 years various approaches to the construction of maps showing the distribution of population in Ireland have been explored. This article reviews these approaches, and is particularly intended to illustrate how the compilers of Irish population maps have confronted that central issue facing all cartographers, namely the selection of an appropriate level of generalisation."

The author analyzes information available from recent British censuses for census enumeration districts (EDs). "A study of Newcastle upon Tyne EDs shows that ED boundaries do not, in fact, mark the boundaries of distinct areas. The presumption against the use of ED boundaries for cartographic representation is reinforced."

Genentech, Roche and Chugai are developing pertuzumab, a next-generation trastuzumab-like molecule (an anti-HER/neu monoclonal antibody), for the potential treatment of cancer. Pertuzumab is currently undergoing phase II clinical trials.
FlyBase (http://flybase.bio.indiana.edu/) provides an integrated view of the fundamental genomic and genetic data on the major genetic model Drosophila melanogaster and related species. Following on the success of the Drosophila genome project, FlyBase has primary responsibility for the continual reannotation of the D.melanogaster genome. The ultimate goal of the reannotation effort is to decorate the euchromatic sequence of the genome with as much biological information as is available from the community and from the major genome project centers. The current cycle of reannotation focuses on establishing a comprehensive data set of gene models (i.e. transcription units and CDSs). There are many points of entry to the genome within FlyBase, most notably through maps, gene ontologies, structured phenotypic and gene expression data, and anatomy.

"Public-Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) are the smallest geographic units for which many U.S. Census variables are reported. In particular, 1990 microdata records for households and individuals can be aggregated only by PUMA, metropolitan area, state, and region. The Census Bureau distributes maps of these PUMAs only on paper, however, and only for individual states. This note describes the construction of a national, digital base map of the PUMAs used in the 1990 U.S. Census microdata files (5% sample)."
