Antenatal ultrasonic evaluation of acardiac monsters.

Acardiac monster represents a rare but serious complication of monozygotic twin pregnancy. Antenatal recognition is important because of accompanying obstetrical problems, including polyhydramnios, dystocia, and uterine rupture. While pathologic findings are varied, characteristic sonographic findings allow accurate prenatal diagnosis. Acardia must be distinguished from sacrococcygeal teratoma, omphalocele and macerated fetus.

The monster in the woods. Responding to the East Bay fire.

One agency decided to fight fire with earthquake when it applied its hard-won knowledge of disaster relief to community efforts during and following the East Bay fire. By drawing on its experience with the earthquake of 1989, Vesper Hospice of the East Bay and Vesper Home Health Agency were able to tame the "monster in the woods."

Constructing monsters: correctional discourse and nursing practice.

This article presents the results of a nursing research that aimed at describing the practice of nursing in an extreme environment where social control and psychiatric nursing care are inextricably enmeshed with one another. The study results indicate that the Correctional Psychiatric Centre (CPC) is a site where two antagonistic discourses (that of the hospital and that of the prison) are contending for the human resources in place. Given that the asylum and the prison are as such two distinct institutions, the correctional psychiatric centre constitutes an ideological space that results from the fusion of both the psychiatric and penal apparatuses. However, characteristics commonly attributed to prisoners, such as 'lying', 'dangerous', 'monstrous' and 'manipulative' are superimposed on the nurses' common theoretical representation that a patient is a person to whom care is provided. Monstrosity was a term regularly employed to describe particular types of inmates. The literature on monsters in quite informative in order to understand the impact of such a representation of forensic psychiatric nursing practice.

[Study on the relationship between congenital toxoplasmosis and monsters of cleft lip and palate accompanied by multiple malformation]

Toxoplasomsis is a zoonotic disease resulted from toxoplasma infection,This paper reports ten monsters that suffered from congenital cleft lip and palate accompanied antigens(RCEP,COA test) were positive.Toxoplasma antibodies (IHA,IFA,RIPEGA test) in mothers' serum were also positive.Microscopic examination revealed toxoplasma trophozoites and pseudocysts in the tissue of cleft lip and palate as well as viscera. In addition,We used SPA method to reveal toxoplasma in the tissue. We indicate that toxoplasma infection of pregnant women is one of the cause of monsters. It is the important biological factor and closely related to eugenics.Stomatologists must pay attention to this etiology.

[The history of the speckled monster].

It demolished 3 empires, killed princess and peasants indifferently, blinded its victims and scarred them for life, changed the outcome of military conflicts and eventually induced the discovery of the vaccination technique. Although conquered in the late seventies of the 20th century, the spirit of "the speckled monster"--smallpox as it was called due to its coetaneous manifestation and high death rate, still roam the earth as a bioterrorist threat. From China to Turkey, from England to the U.S.A., smallpox plague history traverses nations and physicians. This paper discusses the history of the disease and brings forward some of the less famous characters who contributed to the eradication of smallpox.

The use of avian double monsters in studies on induction of the nervous system.

Ninety-eight duck double monsters (siamese twins) were studied between 48 and 72 h of incubation in whole-mount or serial-sectioned preparations. Each case was classified into one of four categories depending on the orientations of the two embryonic axes. In all classes, defects in primary neural induction of various parts of the embryonic nervous system were observed which depended to a large extent on the distance separating the anterior tips of the two notochords or on the relative positions of the notochords. Our observations suggest that: when the same inducing field of one embryo overlaps to a critical extent with that of the twin, the two inducers act as one; induction of forebrain and optic vesicles is purely prechordal; the notochord exerts an inhibition on induction of forebrain by prechordal mesoderm; and the presence of rhombencephalic structures depends on both prechordal and chordamesodermal interactions.

Gila monster and mexican beaded lizard venoms enhance guanylate cyclase activity.

Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) and Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum) venoms enhanced rat liver, lung, heart, kidney, cerebellar and ileal guanylate cyclase [E.C.4.6.1.2] activity two- to threefold at their 1 microgram/ml concentrations. Dose response relationships revealed that the ED50 for stimulation of guanylate cyclase was 10 ng/ml while a concentration of 1 microgram/ml was necessary for the maximal activation with both venoms. Varying the concentration of the guanylate cyclase co-factor maganese had no effect on these lizard venoms' enhancement of guanylate cyclase activity. Since bee venom and the alpha-toxins of poisonous snakes krait and cobra also enhance the soluble form of guanylate cyclase, it appears that at the cellular level the mechanism of action of venoms and animal toxins may include a common process that involves enhancement of guanylate cyclase activity.

Amino acid sequences of helospectins, new members of the glucagon superfamily, found in Gila monster venom.

The amino acid sequences of two closely related peptides from Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) venom are reported. Helospectin I is a 38-residue peptide, His-Ser-Asp-Ala-Thr-Phe-Thr-Ala-Glu-Tyr-Ser-Lys-Leu-Leu-Ala-Lys-Leu-Ala- Leu-Gln - Lys-Tyr-Leu-Glu-Ser-Ile-Leu-Gly-Ser-Ser-Thr-Ser-Pro-Arg-Pro-Pro-Ser-Ser, and helospectin II is a 37-residue peptide identical to helospectin I except that it lacks serine 38. Helospectins are pancreatic secretagogues with structures and bioactivities similar to vasoactive intestinal peptide and other members of the glucagon superfamily. The relative significance of helospectin-I and helospectin-II is presently unknown. Comparison of the 28 residues of vasoactive intestinal peptide with residues 1-28 of helospectin shows that identical amino acids occur in 15 positions. Since members of the glucagon superfamily have similar structures but different biological actions, it is possible that helospectin is more closely related to a mammalian peptide awaiting discovery.

[A case of double monster--duplicitas anterior with diprosopia].

Report on a delivery of a double monster, duplicitas anterior with diprosopia. The course of delivery is compared with literature. The exclusion of malformations in early pregnancy is possible and necessary. Perinatal mortality can be reduced by abortion in time. The psychic burden of women concerned needs a special regard.

Sympodial monsters: two autopsy cases of sympus dipus.

Two autopsy cases of sympodial monsters, sympus dipus, were studied. They are of interest not only because they show the characteristic malformations of the limbs and the viscera below the diaphragm, but because one case also shows Potter's face and an atrial septal defect of the heart. In addition, histologic determinations of sex were performed in both cases.

[Omphalosite monster (acardius acephalus). Apropos of a case].

The omphalosite monster is acardiac (deprived of heart) and his survival is only possible through intrauterine life because of the umbilical vascular connections with his healthy monochorionic twin brother who takes in charge the circulation of both. We report one typical case of the acephalic variety in which all structures derived from the fetal cephalic fold were absent. Its only eventual clinical interest is limited to the prenatal radiological diagnosis and the neonatal onset of congestive heart failure in the healthy twin, a fact which must be known in order to establish an early treatment. On this occasion, we briefly review the current knowledge about this very rare form of monstrosity.

[How does the small human monster attain its real nature?].

Is the new-born babe beautiful, is it ugly? When it comes to life, it is, in a way, a monster. It will be the nurse's task to reshape its tender flesh gently, as a potter could do with clay, and to carry it to its real nature and beauty, which are socio-cultural.

Carla's panic attacks: insight and transformation. What comes out of the 'cracks'--monsters or nascent thoughts?

The author gives an account of the analysis of a young woman suffering from severe panic attacks. He describes the initial problems of the setting and how they are progressively overcome, the emergence of highly structured psychotic nuclei and the gradual approach to the patient's splits. Whereas the panic attacks were originally attributed to the shattering of the symbiotic link, the author shows how they increasingly prove to be bound up with the activation of uncontainable emotions of hate, jealousy and anger, by which the patient feels flooded and overwhelmed, and which are evacuated in the panic attacks until it becomes possible to metabolise them, transform them and make them thinkable, at first in the here and now of the sessions and later through the discovery of the infantile roots both of their virulence and of the deficiency of the parental capacity for containment. These primitive emotions often appear in the form of 'characters' that represent split-off parts of the patient. The author shows how a significant dream about monsters emerging from cracks actually ushers in the ability to think. The paper concludes with a description of the theoretical model underlying the clinical work, which is based on Bion's idea of the transformation of protoemotions into thoughts and on Baranger & Baranger's concept of the field.

Cyclopian monster with anophthalmos.

A cyclopian monster with anophthalmos is a rare occurrence. Such a case is presented along with a case of a cyclops with synophthalmos. The many abnormalities result from an anomalous development of structures derived from the prosencephalon.

Hox genes, homeosis and the evolution of segment identity: no need for hopeless monsters.

Significant changes have occurred in the developmental role of Hox genes, even within groups of arthropods that already have complex body plans and many different segment types. This is hard to reconcile with the 'selector gene' model for Hox gene function. Selector genes act as stable binary switches that direct lineages of cells to adopt alternative developmental fates. This model suggests that the regulation of selector genes can only evolve through mutations that alter the identity of whole developmental compartments -in the case of Hox genes, whole segments. Once segments have evolved distinct morphology and function, such mutations will result in dramatic homeotic transformations that are unlikely to be tolerated by natural selection. Thus we would expect the developmental role of these "master control genes" to become frozen as body plans become more complex. I argue for a revised model for the role and regulation of the Hox genes. This provides alternative mechanisms for evolutionary change, that may lead to incremental changes in segment morphology. The summation of such changes over long periods of time would result in differences in Hox gene function between taxa comparable to the effects of gross homeotic mutations, without the need to invoke the selective advantage of hopeful monsters.
