Decreased prevalence of Orientia tsutsugamushi in trombiculid mites and wild rodents in the Primorye region, Far East Russia.

The isolation of Orientia tsutsugamushi was attempted from 249 rodents and approximately 14,000 trombiculid mites captured in the Primorye region, Far East Russia in 1993 and 1994, where high infection rates were recorded in both rodents and mites in the 1960s. However, no rickettsia was isolated from the samples. Low antibody titers against O. tsutsugamushi were detected in 7.1% of the rodents. These results indicate that the prevalence of O. tsutsugamushi in the Primorye region has decreased considerably in the past 30 years.

[The level of antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus antigens in the blood serum of the inhabitants of southern Siberia and the Far East].

Antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus have been detected in sera from 1538 healthy adult persons living in the south of Siberia and Far East. It has been shown that the virus infectivity varied from 77% in Russians of the Yakutsk ASSR to 100% in Orochi and Russians residing in the territory of the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Province. Antibody levels to the Epstein-Barr virus for inhabitants of the south regions were higher than those for inhabitants of the north regions.

[Importance of the racoon dog in the epidemiology and epizootiology of rabies in the Far East].

Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides Gray) have been shown to take part in the circulation of rabies virus within their natural area in the Far East and thus to be dangerous as a source of infection for humans and domestic animals. The disease has been registered in the areas with high population density of this species, the spread of infection reaching 13 +/- 4.6% in the years of survey. The results of the preliminary determination of the sensitivity of raccoon dogs and the schematic map showing the spread of rabies among the animals of this species are presented.

[Phylogenetic analysis and pathogenicity of tick-borne encephalitis virus from Japan and far-east Russia].

Phylogenetic analysis of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus revealed that Hokkaido strain of TBE virus evolved several hundreds years ago in far-east Russia. TBE virus strains in Irkutsk area were identified as Siberian subtype of TBE virus. BHK-cell adapted mutant of TBE virus showed lower neuro-invasive virulence in mice than parent virus. The mutant carried one amino acid substitution in envelope protein which resulted in increase of positive charge of the protein. The mutant-infected mice showed lower virus titers in bloods and spleens than the parent-infected mice. Infectious c-DNA clone of TBE virus Hokkaido strain was successfully generated and was applied to examine the neurovirulence in mice. One amino acid change in envelope protein and 2 amino acid changes in Ns5 protein showed a synergistic effect on reduced neurovirulence in mice.

[Comparative analysis of virulence of the Siberian and Far-East subtypes of the tick-born encephalitis virus].

The Siberian subtype of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TEV) is different from the Far-East subtype by a moderate virulence observed in Siberian hamsters and by a low infection development rate (100 strains were compared). No differences were found in neuro-invasiveness. Clinical findings and experiments with monkeys denote the ability of the Siberian subtype to provoke severe forms of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The inflammation-and-degenerative changes were localized in the brain cortex, subcortical ganglions, nuclei of medulla oblongata, in the cortex and nuclei of the cerebellum as well as in the anterior horns of the spinal cord. 18 disease cases triggered by the Siberian TEV subtypes in residents of the Western and Eastern Siberia and of Central Russia (Yaroslavl Region), including 7 acute TBE cases (5 lethal outcomes), as well as 11 chronic TBE cases are analyzed. The viral RNA was found in the cortex, medulla oblongata, horn and in the cervical part of the spinal cord of those diseased of acute TBE. Sequences of genotyped strains were presented to Gen Bank, NCBI (AY363846-AY363865).

[Spasskylepis tiunovi sp. n. (Cyclophyllidea, Hymenolepididae)--a new cestode species from shrews of the Far East].

The description of a new cestode species with a serial homonomous strobila, Spasskylepis tiunovisp. n. (Cyclophyllidea, Hymenolepididae, Ditestolepidini) from shrews (Sorex spp.) of the Far East is given. The new spesies differs from the type species of the genus, Spasskylepis ovaluteri (Schaldybin, 1964) in having oligomerous strobila and different size and structure of copulative organs. In contrast to S. ovaluteri, S. tiunovi has less than a half the number of proglottids in its strobila (48-64 versus 118-150). The cirrus of S. tiunovi (0.175-0.195 mm long) is twice as large as that of S. ovaluteri (0.080-0.100 mm long), pleated when invaginated, and armed with spines only in its first third. The copulative section of the vagina in S. tiunovi (as compared with S. ovaluteri) is very long, having loops in the median or aporal part of proglottids, and without a sphincter.

Diversity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Russian Far East.

Thirty strains of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato have been isolated from Ixodes persulcatus ticks and from skin lesions of Lyme disease patients in the Russian Far East from 1997 to 2003. We amplified full-length outer surface protein A (ospA) gene of all strains. BLAST search and following phylogenetic analysis showed that strains form four well-defined groups. Four strains belong to Borrelia afzelii species. Other strains distributed into tree major groups, identified as Borrelia garinii. Indeed, based on the ospA gene comparison, phylogenetic relationship of these groups among each other does not differ from relationship among other previously defined groups inside B. burgdorferi sensu lato genogroup, such as B. afzelii or Borrelia bissettii. Further investigations of genetic and serologic properties of the strains belonging to those groups are required in order to clarify their taxonomic status.

[Dynamics of allozyme heterozygosity in Siberian dwarf pine Pinus pumila (Pall.) Regel populations of the Russian Far East: comparison of embryos and maternal plants].

Siberian dwarf pine, or Japanese stone pine, Pinus pumila (Pall.) Regel is widespread in eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East; the species is bird-dispersed and has a unique spreading or shrub living form. A mixed mating system (predominant outcrossing with self-pollination and matings of close relatives) leads to the formation of partly inbred progenies in P. pumila, as in the majority of other conifers. The question arises as to whether inbred individuals persist in the reproductive part of a population, which can have negative genetic consequences. The ADH, FDH, FEST, GDH, GOT, IDH, LAP, MNR, MDH, PEPCA, 6-PGD, PGI, PGM, SKDH, and SOD isozyme systems were analyzed to study the dynamics of heterozygosity in four P. pumila natural populations from the Pacific region, optimal for the species. Samples were collected in northern Koryakia, southern Kamchatka (two samples), and the Kunashir Island (Kurils). Wright's fixation index was used to estimate the level of inbreeding in embryos from dormant seeds resulting from free pollination and in maternal plants. A substantial level of inbreeding (F(IS) = 0.124-0.342) was observed in the embryo samples but not in three out of the four adult samples. The inbreeding level at the reproductive age was high only in the sample from Koryakia, which was explained by a relatively young age of plants in the population frequently affected by fires. A general increase in heterozygosity, characteristic of other conifers as well, was attributed to elimination of inbred progenies and by balancing selection for heterozygotes, which is a key factor maintaining allozyme polymorphism in populations.

Alterations within the quinolone resistance-determining regions of GyrA and ParC of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in the Far East and the United States.

The genetic mutations within the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of gyrA and parC of 234 Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated in the Far East and the United States, which exhibited either clinically significant ciprofloxacin resistance (CipR) or intermediate ciprofloxacin resistance (CipI) were characterized. A number of GyrA/ParC amino acid alteration patterns were identified, the most prevalent alteration pattern among CipR isolates being GyrA-91,95/ParC-Asp-86- > Asn (91,95/Asp-86- > Asn). Isolates containing 91,95/Asp-86- > Asn belonged to a number of A/S classes, penicillin/tetracycline resistance phenotypes, and plasmid profiles. These results strongly suggest that the continuing emergence of ciprofloxacin-resistant gonococci is not due to the spread of a single or a few strains but to numerous factors such as 'spread of existing strains, importation of new strains and, possibly, de novo development of ciprofloxacin resistance in previously susceptible strains.

Medical affairs in the Far East after V-J day. A personal view.

The invasion of Singapore and Malaya was delayed because of the reduction in the period of service in the Far East. The atom bombs were then dropped and plans for all services including medical ones had to be altered, their main aim becoming the treatment and repatriation of surviving prisoners of war. The ending of the war did not occur abruptly on V-J day; many Japanese troops had to be convinced that the war was over. Meantime the treatment of diseases in British and other service men continued; reference is made to some experiences in Rangoon. The morale of personnel who now were anxious to return to their homes was low and efforts were made to raise their spirits. In India it was accepted that the days of British rule were over.

Ophthalmology services in the Magadan region of the Soviet Far East with special reference to diseases of the retina.

Ophthalmology Services were observed during the two week period July 4th through 16th, 1991 in Magadan in the Soviet Far East. The range of diabetic eye disease appears to be similar to that observed in the West. Major requirements for education (both patient and physician, stressing the importance of controlling blood glucose and its relationship to diabetic eye disease) and inexpensive reliable diagnostic and therapeutic equipment were identified. Substantial benefits can be achieved by supplementing the current medical infra-structure. Continued medical education through exchange of information remains a primary objective.

[Dynamics of drug resistance of Vibrio cholerae isolated from surface water reservoirs in Siberia and the Soviet Far East in 1976-1990].

In the study on antibiotic resistance 1383 strains of El Tor Vibrio cholerae isolated from surface water reservoirs in 12 administrative territories of the Siberia and Far East within a period of 15 years were tested. The following antibiotics were used: ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin, polymyxin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, rifampicin and nalidixic acid. The resistance was unstable and its pattern was wave-like according to annual changes in the biological cycle. It was especially evident in regard to ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin and polymyxin. The highest numbers of the strains were resistant to polymyxin, ampicillin and streptomycin (up to 100 per cent in some years). The lowest numbers of the strains were resistant to chloramphenicol (0.4 per cent) and tetracycline (1.9 per cent). No strains resistant to rifampicin and nalidixic acid were isolated. In some cases the antibiotic resistance level depended on the geographical zone where the strain was isolated. A direct quantitative dependence of the resistance level on the MIC was observed: the lower the MIC of the drug was, the lower the number of the strains resistant to it was. Within the 15-year period there was no general tendency to increase the resistance in V. cholerae to the antibiotics used.

[Serological examination of the population of the Far East for the presence of antibodies to human T cell leukemia virus HTLV-1].

Antibodies to HTLV-1 were detected in sera from 1298 healthy adult persons living in the Far East. It is shown that virus infectivity of the Nigidalts was 8%, Nivkhs--2%, Udegeits--2.9%, Oroches--2.4%, Russians--0.9%. However, the incidence of acute leukemia in these regions is low. It is suggested that these regions are not endemic areas for HTLV-1-associated haemoblastoses.

[Transmissible and natural infections in Siberia and the Far East].

The common and specific features in the time course and structure of morbidity as regards tick-borne rickettsiasis, tick-borne encephalitis, and Lyme disease in Siberia and Far East are discussed. The differentiation of nosological areas of tick-borne rickettsiasis and encephalitis is demonstrated and 9 variants of ratios of epidemiological zones of different hazard of infection established. The subject of comparative epidemiology of focal infections is formulated. General conceptual approaches to epidemiologic survey as the basis for optimizing preventive measures are outlined.

World War II: the Army Dental Corps in the Far East.

This final part of the series on The Army Dental Corps during the Second World War continues with the stories of dental personnel who were captured and incarcerated in the prisoner of war camps in the Far East. What is remarkable about all of these stories is the evident spirit to survive and determination to keep life, which was often hellish, as near to normality as was conceivably possible.

[Oxidized lipid content of local food products in the Far East and their potential role in the genesis of stomach cancer].

A relationship between the consumption of fish preserved by various household methods and incidence of chronic gastric diseases and stomach cancer in the aborigines of the Far East is suggested. Laboratory tests showed that such toxic products of lipid oxidation as peroxides and aldehydes accumulate during storage of fish. The data on their carcinogenecity is inconclusive. However, it is suggested that regular intake of toxic products of lpid oxidation may cause chronic gastric disease which in turn may pave the way for cancer development.

[Demographic factors of longevity in Siberia and Far East].

Longevity indexes LI2 and LI3 (subjects aged 90 and more and 100 and more, respectively, among subjects of 60 and older) were compared in all administrative units on the basis of results of 1989 Census of the population and data of the Central Statistical Office. These values reduce from West to East: LI2 in Western Siberia is equal to 8.48/1000, LI3 to 0.45/1000, in Eastern Siberia these values are 7.48 and 0.35/1000, in the Far East 5.20 and 0.31/1000, in Russia on the whole 9.16 and 0.47/1000, respectively. The territories with relatively high LI2 values were the Aghinsk Buryat Autonomous Territory (11.42/1000), Yakutia (10.79/1000), Altai (9.41/1000).
