11B solid-state NMR investigation of the rhamnogalacturonan II-borate complex in plant cell walls.

The boron in plant cell walls, which is water-insoluble and in the solid state, is solubilized by pectinase digestion to give a dimeric rhamnogalacturonan II-borate (dRG-II-B) complex. To clarify the nondestructive structure of boron present in plant cell walls (as represented by sugar beet fiber), we performed 192- and 96-MHz 11B solid state NMR measurements. The use of a high field magnet frequency of 192-MHz enabled us to observe 11B isotropic chemical shifts at -9.7 and -9.6 ppm for dRG-II-B and sugar beet fiber in the solid state, respectively, demonstrating that the boron in isolated dRG-II-B and in plant cell walls is present as a borate-diol ester (1:2). The observation of the magnetic field dependence of the chemical shift and lineshape for the borate-diol ester (1:2) by quadrupolar interaction suggested that the borate complex had a distorted tetrahedral boron structure.

Arrest of rat embryonic development by the inhibition of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. I. Intrauterine administration of L-serine-borate complex.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the activity of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP, E.C. 2.3.2.2) in rat endometrium (day 5 of pregnancy). Since gamma-GTP is an enzyme involved in the translocation of amino acids from fluids toward tissues, these substrates are necessary for anabolic processes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The presence of statistically higher activity of gamma-GTP in rat (Sprague-Dawley) implantation sites (1.06 nmol/mg protein/min) than in nondecidualized (0.87 nmol/mg protein/min) tissues was demonstrated. The intrauterine administration of L-serine-borate complex (5 mM) during day 5 of pregnancy arrested 91.6% of rat embryonic development (day 18). This inhibitory effect was not present when borate or L-serine was administered separately. The L-serine-borate complex also inhibited (by 88%) the gamma-GTP in vitro. CONCLUSION: The inhibition of gamma-GTP by L-serine-borate complex might be considered as a new approach to the arrest of biological processes in differentiation or development.

Regio- and stereoselective palladium-pincer complex catalyzed allylation of sulfonylimines with trifluoro(allyl)borates and allylstannanes: a combined experimental and theoretical study.

Regio- and stereoselective palladium-pincer complex catalyzed allylation of sulfonylimines has been performed by using substituted trifluoro(allyl)borates and trimethylallylstannanes. The reactions provide the corresponding branched allylic products with excellent regioselectivity. The stereoselectivity of these processes is very high when trifluoro(cinnamyl)borate and trimethyl cinnamyl stannane are employed as allylic precursors; however, the reaction with trifluoro(crotyl)borate results in poor stereoselectivity. The major diastereomer formed in these reactions was the syn isomer, while the (previously reported) reactions with aldehyde electrophiles afforded the anti products, indicating that the mechanism of the stereoselection is dependent on the applied electrophile. Therefore, we have studied the mechanistic aspects of the allylation reactions by experimental studies and DFT modeling. The experimental mechanistic studies have clearly shown that potassium trifluoro(allyl)borate undergoes transmetallation with palladium-pincer complex 1 a affording an eta(1)-allylpalladium-pincer complex (1 e). The mechanism of the transfer of the allyl moiety from palladium to the sulfonylimine substrate was studied by DFT calculations at the B3PW91/LANL2DZ+P level of theory. These calculations have shown that the electrophilic substitution of sulfonylimines proceeds in a one-step process with a relatively low activation energy. The topology of the potential energy surface in the vicinity of the transition-state structure proved to be rather complicated as nine different geometries with similar energies were located as first order saddle points. Our studies have also shown that the high stereoselectivity with cinnamyl metal reagents stems from steric interactions in the TS structure of the allylation reaction. In addition, these studies have revealed that the mechanism of the stereoselection in the allylation of aldehydes and sulfonylimines is fundamentally different.

Synthesis, characterization, and theoretical studies of group 4 amido hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate complexes.

Titanium and zirconium amido complexes containing a hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) or hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate (Tp*) ligand TpM(NMe(2))(3) (M = Ti, 1; M = Zr, 2) and Tp*M(NMe(2))(3) (M = Ti, 3; M = Zr, 4) were prepared by the reactions of M(NMe(2))(3)Cl (M = Ti, Zr) with sodium hydridotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate and potassium hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, respectively. The structures of 1, 2, and 4.CH(2)Cl(2) were determined by X-ray diffraction and show octahedral coordination geometry around the metal centers. Density functional theory calculations at the B3PW91 level were performed to understand the orientations and the rotational behavior of amido ligands in these metal complexes.

Metal-bis[poly(pyrazolyl)borate] complexes. Electrochemical, magnetic, and spectroscopic properties and coupled electron-transfer and spin-exchange reactions.

Electrochemical, magnetic, and spectroscopic properties are reported for homoleptic divalent (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru) and trivalent (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) metal-bis[poly(pyrazolyl)borate] complexes, [M(pzb)(2)](+/0), where pzb(-) = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp), hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate (Tp), or tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate (pzTp). Ligand field strengths in metal-pzb complexes increase as Tp < Tp < pzTp, which reflects the importance of steric rather than electronic effects on spectroscopic properties. However, metal-centered redox potentials become more negative as pzTp < Tp < Tp, which follows the electron-donating ability of the ligands. Co(III)/Co(II) and Mn(III)/Mn(II) electrode reactions are accompanied by a change in metal atom spin-state; i.e., (S = 0) [Co(pzb)(2)](+) + e(-) <==> (S = 3/2) [Co(pzb)(2)] and (S = 1) [Mn(pzb)(2)](+) + e(-) <==> (S = 5/2) [Mn(pzb)(2)]. Apparent heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constants derived from sweep-rate dependent cyclic voltammetric peak potential separations in 1,2-dichloroethane are small and decrease as pzTp > Tp > Tp for the Co(III)/Co(II) couples. Slow electron transfer is characteristic of coupled electron transfer and spin exchange. [M(Tp)(2)](+/0) redox potentials relative to values for other homoleptic MN(6)(3+/2+) couples change as M varies from Cr to Ni. For early members of the series, [M(Tp)(2)](+/0) potentials nearly equal those of complexes with aliphatic N-donor ligands (e.g., triazacyclononane, sarcophagine). However, [M(Tp)(2)](+/0) potentials approach those of [M(bpy)(3)](3+/2+) for later members of the series. The variation suggests a change in the nature of the metal-pzb interaction upon crossing the first transition row.

Modeling the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones to vinylboranes in competition with boration, cyclization, and oxidation reactions.

Structures and energetics of reactants, reactant complexes, concerted transition structures, and products of the cycloaddition of the prototypical nitrone with vinylborane have been produced and discussed. Structure optimizations have been performed at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/AUG-cc-pVDZ levels of approximation, and single-point calculations on the B3LYP geometries have been carried out at the MP4(SDTQ) level with the same basis sets. Kinetic contributions to standard enthalpies, entropies, and free enthalpies have been computed at the same levels of geometry optimizations. The effects of methyl and chloro substitution on the BH2 group and of methyl substitution on the vinyl moiety has been also explicitly considered. The most striking theoretical features of this cycloaddition are (i) the formation of reactant complexes where the nitrone oxygen is strictly bound up to the boron atom (B...O interactions), (ii) their persistence in the endo/exo transition structures, and (iii) energy profiles suggesting very high reaction rates, regiospecificity (5-borylisoxazolidines) and complete endo-stereoselectivity. The BH2 (BX2) substituent appears to induce a sort of intramolecular catalysis which is also largely selective in favor of the endo reaction path. Possible competitive reaction paths such as cyclization, organoboration, and oxidation have equally been investigated, on the same grounds, both with prototypical reagents and with dimethylvinylborane, dichlorovinylborane, 2-methyl-1-propenylborane, and 2-methyl-1-propenyldichloroborane. The transition structures for these reaction paths are significantly higher in energy than those of the corresponding 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions in the sequence oxidation >> cyclization > boration > cycloaddition, whereas the resulting reaction products show the reversed sequence. Polar solvents appear to increase the competition of boration although maintaining its character of secondary reaction. As expected, the reaction rate of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition is lowered by dimethyl substitution on the vinyl CH2 reacting center (i.e., for the reaction of 2-methyl-1-propenylborane and 2-methyl-1-propenyldichloroborane) whereas the reaction rate of boration is increased, the boration results being significantly competitive even in the gas phase. Experiments for the control of the above predictions are not yet available.

Molecular addition compounds. 18. Borane adducts with hydroxydialkyl sulfide borates for hydroboration. New, essentially odorless, water-soluble sulfide borane acceptors for hydroboration.

Hydroxydialkyl sulfides of general formula RS(CH2CH2)nH (R = Et, t-Bu, i-Am; n = 1-3) and thiodiethanol monomethyl ether (9) have been synthesized and used as borane carriers. The compounds 3 and 6 (R = Et, n = 2, 3), 7 (R = t-Bu, n = 3), and 9 are completely miscible with water and exhibit only very mild odor. The sulfides were transformed into the corresponding borates by treatment either with boric acid or with diborane. The borates complex 3 mol of borane per 1 mol of borate to give highly reactive, stable, liquid adducts, hydroborating 1-octene in 15 min at room temperature. The adducts derived from water soluble sulfides 3 and 9, selected for the hydroboration of more hindered olefins, reacted readily with (-)-beta-pinene, 1-methylcyclohexene, and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene. The carrier borates liberated from the adducts during hydroboration are readily hydrolyzed to give 3 and 9, which can be washed off with water from trialkylboranes or oxidation products. Consequently, hydroxydialkyl sulfides 3 and 9 are the first completely water-soluble sulfide borane carriers that can be washed off in the workup of hydroboration products. The adducts derived from 3 and 9 are new, highly promising reagents suitable for large scale hydroborations and reductions.

Tris(pyrazolyl)borate carbosilane dendrimers and metallodendrimers.

A modified tris(pyrazolylborate) ligand has been prepared in two steps. First, reaction of triisopropylborate with allylmagnesium bromide and further treatment with benzoyl chloride gave CH(2) = CHCH(2)B(O(i)Pr), which was then reacted with potassium pyrazolate and pyrazole to give the compound K[CH(2) = CHCH(2)Bpz(3)]. The new allyl-containing scorpionate anion of acts as a bi- or tri-dentate ligand, as shown by the mononuclear complexes [CH(2) = CHCH(2)Bpz(3)M(LL)] (M = Rh, LL = nbd, ; LL = tfb, ; LL = (CO)(PPh(3)), ; M = Ir, LL = cod, ), obtained from reactions of the chlorido-bridged dinuclear complexes [{M(mu-Cl)(LL)}(2)] with 2. Furthermore, the borate represents a key material to achieve the attachment of tris(pyrazolyl)borate groups to the peripheries of carbosilane dendrimers. Thus, the platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions of compound with the dendritic cores Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)H](4) (G(0)-(SiH)(4)), (G(1)-(SiH)(8)), and (G(2)-(SiH)(16)) gave the corresponding borate-containing dendrimers Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)](4) (G(0)-B(4)), Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)}(2)](4) (G(1)-B(8)), and Si[(CH(2))(3)SiMe{(CH(2))(3)SiMe[(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)B(O(i)Pr)(2)](2)}(2)](4) (G(2)-B(16)) selectively in the anti-Markovnikov direction. Further reactions of G(0)-B(4), G(1)-B(8) and G(2)-B(16) with potassium pyrazolate and pyrazole rendered the corresponding polyanionic dendrimers K(4)[Si{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)Bpz(3)}(4)] (G(0)-(Bpz(3))(4)), G(1)-(Bpz(3))(8), and G(2)-(Bpz(3))(16), respectively, which contain 4, 8, and 16 tris(pyrazolyl)borate groups symmetrically located around the dendritic peripheries. These unusual polyanionic dendrimers are excellent scaffolds to support metal centres, as shown by the reactions of G(0)-(Bpz(3))(4), G(1)-(Bpz(3))(8), and G(2)-(Bpz(3))(16) with [{Rh(mu-Cl)(nbd)}(2)] to give the neutral rhodadendrimers [Si{(CH(2))(3)SiMe(2)(CH(2))(3)Bpz(3)Rh(nbd)}(4)] G(0)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(4), G(1)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(8) and G(2)-(Bpz(3)Rh)(16) as stable solids in excellent yields. Following this protocol, mixed rhodium/iridium metallodendrimers can be prepared.

Structural chemistry of new lithium bis(oxalato)borate solvates.

Recently lithium bis(oxalato)borate, LiB(C2O4)2, has been proposed as an alternative lithium salt for the electrolyte in rechargeable batteries that do not contain explosive perchlorate, reactive fluoride or toxic arsenic. This lithium salt crystallizes in the form of solvates from such solvents as water, acetonitrile, acetone, dimethoxyethane, 1,3-dioxolane and ethylene carbonate. Their crystal structures were determined in order to explore the crystal chemistry of this lithium salt. It was found that most of the solvents consist of a lithium bis(oxalato)borate dimer in which the ligand acts as both a chelating and a bridging agent. Lithium has octahedral coordination that typically includes one or, less commonly, two solvent molecules. An exception to this rule is the ethylene carbonate solvate where the lithium is tetrahedrally surrounded exclusively by the solvent and bis(oxalato)borate plays the role of counter-ion only. The ethylene carbonate solvates were also studied for LiPF6 and LiAsF6 salts and they have similar structures to the bis(oxalato)borate tetrahedral complexes.

Borate and glycerol inhibition of the aggregation of guinea pig platelets by bovine factor VIII and ristocetin.

To demonstrate the importance of the carbohydrate portions of bovine factor VIII and ristocetin for the induction of platelet aggregation, guinea pig platelets were treated with either borate or glycerol before and after addition of ristocetin or bovine factor VIII. Both borate and glycerol were capable of inhibiting the aggregation of blood platelets induced by adding bovine factor VIII or ristocetin to platelet-rich plasma. Furthermore, aggregates formed after treatment with either agent could be dispersed by high concentrations of either borate or glycerol. These effects did not appear to be solely the result of high ionic strength or of irreversible damage to the platelets. The results obtained support the hypothesis that the binding of the carbohydrate groups of factor VIII plays an important role in the induction of platelet aggregation and in the maintenance of aggregates formed in response to the treatment of platelet-rich plasma with bovine factor VIII or ristocetin.

Analysis of glycopeptide antibiotics using micellar electrokinetic chromatography and borate complexation.

Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was investigated as a technique for the separation and analysis of the following related glycopeptide antibiotics: alpha-avoparcin, beta-avoparcin, ristocetin A, ristocetin B and vancomycin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles were employed as the pseudostationary phase in conjunction with borate or CHES buffers at pH 9.2. A complete separation of the glycopeptides was achieved only when two separation mechanisms were employed simultaneously: (i) differential partitioning of the glycopeptides into SDS micelles; and (ii) differential complexation of the glycopeptides with the borate anion from the borate buffer. Quantitatively, linearity was confirmed for each antibiotic from 0.5 to 40 ppm, with correlation coefficients (r(2)) ranging from 0.9996 (vancomycin and beta-avoparcin) to 0.9986 (alpha-avoparcin). Detection limits ranging from 0.01 ppm (vancomycin) to 0.2 ppm (avoparcin) were achieved, and the mean recovery of avoparcin at the 10 ppm level was 99.2%.

Separation of disaccharides as their borate complexes by capillary electrophoresis with indirect detection in visible range.

Borate complexation was used to make possible the separation of disaccharides by capillary electrophoresis with indirect detection. A high borate concentration did not affect the indirect detection sensitivity in as negative a way as predicted previously. The concentration sensitivity for sucrose was determined to be 2 mM at the borate concentration of 200 mM in running electrolyte. The newly introduced background [corrected] chromophore, p-nitrophenol, allows the monitoring of the separation process in a visible range at 400 nm. This also enables the indirect detection of UV-absorbing compounds in complex mixtures in which they would be impossible to detect with a UV-absorbing background [corrected] chromophore.

Sequence-specific and nonspecific mobilities of single-stranded oligonucleotides observed by changing the borate buffer concentration.

The suitability of gel electrophoresis to structural analysis of nucleic acids has been examined, using from borate buffer concentrations (in the range from 4.5 to 450 mM. The gel electrophoretic mobility of single-stranded oligonucleotides was shown to be sequence-dependent at higher concentrations than 27 mM of borate buffer and nondependent at lower one (less than 9 mM). As a result, each dodecamer had a sequence-specific critical concentration of Tris-borate-EDTA (TBE) buffer at which each seems to change its structural state. At the lower concentration than the critical one, all the dodecamers turned to the state of a finite mobility and migrated in a sharp band. This finding is discussed and rationalized by the assumption that the difference in conformational dynamics of oligonucleotides, due to the difference in their sequence, is mainly responsible for the observed difference in their mobility.

Chiral resolution of monosaccharides as 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone derivatives by ligand-exchange CE using borate anion as a central ion of the chiral selector.

Six reducing monosaccharides (mannose, galactose, fucose, glucose, xylose, and arabinose) were derivatized with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) and chiral resolution of these racemic PMP-monosaccharides was studied by ligand-exchange CE using borate anion as a central ion of the chiral selector and (S)-3-amino-1,2-propanediol (SAP) as a chiral selector ligand. PMP-mannose, PMP-galactose and PMP-fucose were successfully enantioseparated. Lowering the capillary temperature increased the resolution of PMP-mannose system, but decreased that of PMP-galactose and PMP-fucose systems. Whereas the maximum resolution was obtained at pH 8.9 in the PMP-mannose system, resolution increased gradually with pH in the PMP-galactose and PMP-fucose systems. Expecting the formation of the ternary borate complexes with SAP and PMP-monosaccharide in the CE experiments, the optimized structures of the borate diastereomers were obtained by semiempirical molecular orbital calculations to discuss the structural difference of the diastereomers in connection with the enantioseparation behaviors.

Kinetics and mechanisms of the conversion of silicate (45S5), borate, and borosilicate glasses to hydroxyapatite in dilute phosphate solutions.

Bioactive glasses with controllable conversion rates to hydroxyapatite (HA) may provide a novel class of scaffold materials for bone tissue engineering. The objective of the present work was to comprehensively characterize the conversion of a silicate bioactive glass (45S5), a borate glass, and two intermediate borosilicate glass compositions to HA in a dilute phosphate solution at 37 degrees Celsius. The borate glass and the borosilicate glasses were derived from the 45S5 glass by fully or partially replacing the SiO(2) with B(2)O(3). Higher B(2)O(3) content produced a more rapid conversion of the glass to HA and a lower pH value of the phosphate solution. Whereas the borate glass was fully converted to HA in less than 4 days, the silicate (45S5) and borosilicate compositions were only partially converted even after 70 days, and contained residual SiO(2) in a Na-depleted core. The concentration of Na(+) in the phosphate solution increased with reaction time whereas the PO(4) (3-) concentration decreased, both reaching final limiting values at a rate that increased with the B(2)O(3) content of the glass. However, the Ca(2+) concentration in the solution remained low, below the detection limit of atomic absorption, throughout the reaction. Immersion of the glasses in a mixed solution of K(2)HPO(4) and K(2)CO(3) produced a carbonate-substituted HA but the presence of the K(2)CO(3) had little effect on the kinetics of conversion to HA. The kinetics and mechanisms of the conversion process of the four glasses to HA are compared and used to develop a model for the process.

Capillary electrophoretic separation of nucleotide isomers via complexation with cyclodextrin and borate.

The electrophoretic behaviour of monophosphorylated nucleotide isomers can be manipulated using complex-forming reactions with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and borate. Resolution of the 2'- and 3'-isomers of nucleotides is possible when the electrophoresis buffer contains 10 mM CD. The effect of beta-CD concentration on electrophoretic mobility is used to calculate the formation constant, K, of beta-CD-nucleotide complexes. The 3'-isomer of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) forms the strongest complex with beta-CD probably as a result of hydrogen bonding between the phosphate group of AMP and hydroxyls of beta-CD. In addition, complexation of 5'-nucleotides with borate increases the migration time window and leads to better separation. Complex-forming reactions of guanosine monophosphate and uridine monophosphate are shown to be strongly dependent on buffer pH. A mixture of 12 monophosphorylated nucleotides can be separated in less than 15 min using a buffer of 20 mM borate-10 mM beta-CD.

Fire resistance of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzieesi) treated with borates and natural extractives.

The objective of this study was to determine fire resistance of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzieesi (Mirb.) Franco) specimens treated with borate supplemented aqueous solutions of brutia pine bark powder, acorn powder, sumach leaf powder, and gall-nut powder. Boric acid (BA) and borax (BX) were used as borates which are the most commonly used fire retardants in wood preservation industry. Natural extractives (brutia pine bark powder, sumach leaf powder, acorn powder, and gall-nut powder) were also used which have toxic efficiency against insects and fungi due to their tannin contents. A commercial treatment compound Tanalith-CBC (copper-borate-chromate), which is an impregnation chemical, is used for comparison. The fire test method was performed in three stages: flame stage, without flame stage, and glowing stage. Results indicated that the lowest temperature for flame stage, without flame stage, and glowing stage were obtained for specimens treated with BA and BX mixture (7:3; weight:weight). The lowest mass loss was found for the specimens treated with a mixture of BA and BX. Natural extractives did not improve fire resistance of the samples. However, boric acid and borax had excellent fire retardant effectiveness over untreated and treated samples with natural extractives.

Preparative production and separation of 2-acetamido-2-deoxymannopyranoside-containing saccharides using borate-saturated polyolic exclusion gels.

A new separation method based on the combination of exclusion and ion exchange chromatography in borate buffer was developed. It allows semi-preparatory and preparatory separation of isobaric N-acylhexosamines (C-2 epimers) and corresponding methyl glycosides (anomers and tautomers). Three types of polyolic gels were tested for these separations. Ion-exchange HPLC was used as a rapid and reliable method for the quantification of the respective analytes. NMR studies of the interactions of N-acetylhexosamines with borate confirmed the importance of a proper stereochemical arrangement of acetamido sugars for their interactions with borate anions.
