Multifractal analysis of the 137Cs fallout pattern in Austria resulting from the Chernobyl accident.

The cumulative deposition of the 137Cs fallout in Austria resulting from the passage of the Chernobyl cloud has been investigated by applying correlation dimension and hyperbolic frequency distribution methods. For the analysis, a total of 1,881 deposition values were used, which were collected by the Federal Environmental Agency of Austria and the Federal Ministry of Health, representing all available measurements of 137Cs in soil made in Austria after the Chernobyl accident. From these data a hyperbolic exponent for the frequency distribution of 4.0 and a set of fractal correlation dimensions, which decrease from 1.426 +/- 0.022 (for the whole network) to 0.706 +/- 0.047 (for 137Cs values > or = 100 kBq m(-2)), were derived, thus confirming that the fallout pattern can be described as a multifractal.

Occurrence of Isospora suis in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Nationwide surveys for the occurrence of Isospora suis were carried out in Germany, Austria and Switzerland including a questionnaire regarding herd size, health status and management practices and a coccidiosis sampling kit for pooled faecal samples from litters of suckling piglets. A total of 184 veterinary practices participated in the survey and returned 1745 samples (331 kits) from 324 farms in the north (n = 98), south (n = 84), centre/east (n = 42) and west (n = 10) of Germany, Austria (n = 61) and Switzerland (n = 29) with larger farms in north and centre/east (average number of sows: 270 and 500) and smaller ones in the south (95), Austria (60) and Switzerland (43). Larger farms tended to have better hygienic standards (slatted floors, disinfection of the farrowing units). The majority of the participating farms (93.5%) reported problems with diarrhoea in piglets at 2-3 weeks of age, significantly associated (P < 0.001) with uneven weaning weights (94.9%). Toltrazuril (5%; Baycox) was used only rarely; however, in these farms unevenness of weaning weights was less frequently observed (P = 0.011). A 76.2% of the farms were positive for I. suis (samples contained mostly low or moderate oocyst numbers), especially in the south (P < 0.001). Oocysts were more frequently found in samples from farms with reported diarrhoea (P = 0.011), uneven weight gain (P = 0.019) or in herds of small size (P < 0.001). Disinfection, floor type or treatment with toltrazuril did not affect the frequency of observation of oocysts.

Prevalence of antibodies to pestiviruses in goats in Austria.

Serological investigations were carried out to determine the prevalence of pestiviral infections in goats in Austria, and to investigate the possible relations to herd management practices. The prevalence of antibodies to pestiviruses was investigated in 549 goats in 80 flocks from four regions of Austria. The examination for antibodies was performed using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detecting antibodies to the border disease virus (BDV) and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). The observed individual prevalence was 11.5% and the flock prevalence was 31.3%. Comparative neutralization studies on the 63 seropositive samples with BVDV-1, BVDV-2 and the BDV yielded in 32 samples higher titres (> or =4-fold) to BVDV-1 and in two samples to BDV. The remaining samples did not show distinct differences in antibody titres against the pestivirus strains tested because of the cross-reactions. There was a significant (P < 0.05) association between the prevalence of antibodies to pestiviruses and the presence of cattle on the farm. Significant (P < 0.05) geographical variations in individual prevalence were obtained, ranging from 3.5% in lower Austria to 20.2% in Vorarlberg.

Follow-up of epidemiological data of cryptococcosis in Austria, Germany and Switzerland with special focus on the characterization of clinical isolates.

The present survey in Austria, Germany and Switzerland continued the survey of cryptococcosis set up by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) in 1997. From 2000 to 2003 77 cases have been reported. An HIV infection is still the most important risk factor (68%). Young HIV+ women from ASIA contributed to the increase of cryptococcosis in females. A total of 129 clinical isolates of both surveys were genotyped by PCR fingerprinting to study the prevalence of different genotypes. The prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii (serotype A) with the genotypes VNA1 and VNA2 was higher in Germany and Austria (74.5%) than in Switzerland (52%), while in Switzerland the Cr. neoformans hybrids AD (26%) and Cr. neoformans var. neoformans (serotype D) (22%) were more prevalent compared with Germany and Austria (8 and 17.5% respectively). Cryptococcus gattii isolates were studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. DNA in the ITS region was sequenced to get further information about Cr. neoformans serotype AD strains and about the geographical origin of the Cr. gattii isolates. The ITS sequence of the serotype AD isolates of the genotypes VNAD1, VNAD2 and VNAD4 is usually identical to serotype A or serotype D respectively. In the three isolates of the genotype VNAD3 a genotype-specific sequence pattern was detected. Two autochthonous infections due to Cr. gattii could indicate that the genotype VGIV with the ITS type 'Asia 2' might be endemic in Europe.

Statistical analysis of invasive cardiology for Austria in 1992 as an approach to quality assessment.

Quality Control in Interventional Cardiology requires perfect documentation. We, therefore, report a mutual controlling system, which has been initiated in Austria 3 years ago. An all round inquiry within all the 28 Austrian catheterization laboratories was successful with a feedback rate of 100%, controlled by visiting the centers, random tests, and several phone calls. This year was the first time that an entire European country followed the guidelines for statistical documentation that the European Society of Cardiology has suggested. Within the year 1992, 3,780 percutaneous coronary angioplasties were performed in Austria, which is 19.7% more, compared to the year before. At the same time 18,806 coronary angiographies, 102 percutaneous valvuloplasties, and 138 electrophysiological ablations took place. Austria reached 84% of the number of angiographies and 50% of the percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) numbers, the World Health Organization (WHO) has provided for a country of 7.82 million inhabitants. One hundred and fifty-two "new devices" (stent/n = 89, atherectomy/n = 44, laser/n = 6, etc.) were used during this year, which was 4.0% of all PTCA procedures. Angioscopy (n = 11) and intracoronary ultrasound (n = 82) accounted for another 2.5% of "new devices". Complication rate was 0.48% hospital deaths, 0.93% emergency bypass surgery, and 1.88% myocardial infarction in 3,780 PTCAs. The individual data of each center were treated confidentially and anonymously and the evaluated questionnaire was sent back to the respective center only, including an individual recommendation for quality improvement.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms in Austria as assessed by an open survey of 2,096 men.

OBJECTIVE: The lack of knowledge on the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in German-speaking countries prompted us to assess this issue in Austria by means of a large open-scale study. METHODS: A community sample of 2,096 men equal to or older than 20 years, who participated in a health survey in Vienna, completed the recently validated German translation of the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). In addition, a detailed urological history and a physical evaluation (including digital rectal examination) were obtained. RESULTS: The mean age in the study population was 47 +/- 14 (range 20-96) years. The mean IPSS increased from 2.1 (20-29 years, n = 128) to 2.6 (30-39, n = 322), 3.0 (40-49, n = 902), 5.8 (50-59, n = 325), 5.7 (60-69, n = 219), 6.4 (70-79, n = 158), and 6.1 (>/=80 years, n = 42). The proportion of patients with moderate/severe LUTS defined by an IPSS >7 increased from 6.3% (20-29 years) to 8.4 (30-39), 11.1 (40-49), 27.1 (50-59), 28.3 (60-69), 36 (70-79), and 35.7% (>/=80 years). Overall, 7.8% of the men aged >/=50 years previously underwent transurethral resection of the prostate. In men aged 50-59 years, this proportion was 1.3%, and it increased to 4.2, 20.9, and 27.5% in those aged 60-69, 70-79, and >/=80 years, respectively. 7% of the men had previously consulted an urologist for micturition problems. In all life decades, these patients had higher IPSS levels than those with no previous urological visit. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the data generated, it is estimated that at present in Austria 26.9% (n = 291,761) of the men aged >/=50 years have moderate and further 2.8% (n = 30,815) severe LUTS. 7.8% of the men aged >/=50 years (n = 84,256) had a previous transurethral resection of the prostate. These data confirm the high prevalence of this condition in Austria.

[Frequency of cesarean sections in Austria].

OBJECTIVE: While there exist detailed reports on the frequency of cesarean sections in many European countries, there are only selective data of single centers available in Austria. Thus this study aims at evaluating the present frequency of cesarean sections in Austria. METHODS: To achieve this aim, we analyzed all births during the years 1996 (n = 89,208), 1997 (n = 84,408) and 1998 (n = 81,568). Along with the general mean rate of sections, we also describe the influences of the duration of pregnancy, of the birth weight, and of the number of paturitions. The data were statistically evaluated by chi-square test. RESULTS: During the study period, the frequence of sections rose from 13.08% (1996) to 14.0% (1997) and to 14.55% (1998). This rise proved to be statistically significant (p = 0.0001). 47% of premature births (< or = 35th week of gestation) are delivered by cesarean section. This rate drops to only 13.24% after the 35th week of gestation. Yet, more than half of pregnancies with dystrophic children (<2,000 g) are delivered by cesarean section even after the 35th week of gestation. Primigravidae have to expect section in 17% of the cases (1998); the section rate diminishes continuously, however, with increasing number of pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS: Following the general trend, the frequency of cesarean sections is continuously rising in Austria too. The present study can serve as a basis for international comparisons as well as for measures of intradepartmental quality control.

Characteristics and trends in required home care by GPs in Austria: diseases and functional status of patients.

BACKGROUND: Almost all societies carry responsibility towards patients who require continuous medical care at home. In many health systems the general practitioner cooperates with community based services of home care and coordinates all medical and non medical activities. In Austria the general practitioner together and in cooperation with relatives of the patient and professional organisations usually takes on this task by visiting his patients. This study was carried out to identify diseases that need home care and to describe the functional profile of home care patients in eastern Austria. METHODS: Cross sectional observational study with 17 GP practices participating during 2 study periods in 1997 and in 2004 in eastern Austria. Each GP identified patients requiring home care and assessed their underlying diseases and functional status by filling in a questionnaire personally after an encounter. Patients in nursing homes were excluded. Statistical tests used were t-tests, contingency tables, nonparametric Wilcoxon signed rank sum test and Fisher-combination test. RESULTS: Patients with degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (65%) caused by Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular occlusive disease and patients with degenerative diseases of the skeletal system (53%) were the largest groups among the 198 (1997) and 261 (2004) home care cases of the 11 (1997) and 13 (2004) practices. Malignant diseases in a terminal state constituted only 5% of the cases. More than two thirds of all cases were female with an average age of 80 years. Slightly more than 70% of the patients were at least partially mobile. CONCLUSION: Home care and home visits for patients with degenerative diseases of the central nervous and skeletal system are important elements of GP's work. Further research should therefore focus on effective methods of training and rehabilitation to better the mental and physical status of patients living in their private homes.

DNA analysis of Huntington's disease: five years of experience in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: To review the direct DNA testing for Huntington's disease (HD) in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria from 1993 to 1997, and to analyze the population with regard to age structure, gender, and family history. METHODS: Twelve laboratories (nine in Germany, two in Austria, and one in Switzerland) recorded data pertaining to repeat number, gender, age at molecular diagnosis, and family history of probands. The molecular test was categorized as either diagnostic (for symptomatic individuals), presymptomatic (for individuals at risk), and prenatal (for pregnancies at risk). RESULTS: A total of 3,090 HD patients, 992 individuals at risk, and 24 fetuses were investigated using DNA analysis. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed in 65.6% of patients. A total of 38.5% of individuals at risk inherited an expanded CAG repeat. The female-to-male ratio showed a distinct predominance of women both in the diagnostic and presymptomatic groups. Of the fetuses tested, six were carriers of an expanded CAG repeat. Two pregnancies were interrupted; one pregnancy was not. No information about the parents' decision was obtained for the remaining three pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 20% of the estimated 10,000 HD patients living in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria have been identified by DNA analysis (total population, approximately 100 million; incidence of HD, 1:10,000). Assuming a ratio of HD patients to individuals at risk of 1:3, approximately 30,000 individuals are, in principle, eligible for a presymptomatic test. Less than 3 to 4% of individuals at risk have requested a presymptomatic test. This shows that the assumed enormous request of predictive testing has not occurred. More surprisingly, prenatal diagnoses were found to be rare.

Latent carcinoma of the thyroid in Austria: a systematic autopsy study.

Data concerning the incidence of latent thyroid carcinoma (LTC) in populations with endemic goiter are scarce. Despite the introduction of iodine goiter prophylaxis in the early sixties, iodine supply is still insufficient in Austria and goiter remains endemic. This is the first detailed study dealing with epidemiological features of LTC at autopsy in Austria. A total of 118 thyroid glands were included in the study. The glands were serially sectioned at 2- to 3-mm intervals, embedded in paraffin and histologically examined for the presence of LTC. In addition, the incidence and severity of lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) were evaluated. Ten thyroids were found to contain LTC (8.6%). All were of the papillary type. The mean tumor dimension was 4.9 mm +/- 3.2, the smallest lesion measuring 1 mm. Only the largest tumor slightly exceeded the extent of a microcarcinoma and measured 10.5 mm. Multifocal disease was present in three cases (30%). The prevalence of latent papillary thyroid carcinoma (LPTC) was 6.6% (n = 4) in females and 10.5% (n = 6) in males. The mean age of the subjects with LPTC was 67.7 +/- 14.4 yr, range 37 to 77 yr. Goitrous thyroids were seen in 33 cases (28%): One gland was diffusely enlarged and 32 (27.1%) enlarged glands were nodular goiters. The overall prevalence of LT was 30.5% (n = 36) and the only type of thyroiditis observed was focal lymphocytic thyroiditis (FLT). There was no correlation between the presence of LPTC and goiter, the presence of FLT and the subjects' age and sex. The incidence of LPTC in Austria is similar to that in nongoitrous regions. The adult population at large seems to be uniformly exposed to factors involved in the initiation and early growth of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This suggests that the levels of iodine intake only play a minor role in the early phase of the carcinogenesis of PTC, but may be of some importance in the progression of LPTC to clinically evident PTC.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity in male adolescents in Austria between 1985 and 2000. A population based study.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the prevalence of overweight and obesity in young Austrian men, to describe a possible time trend during the observation period 1985-2000 and to define regional differences within the country. DESIGN: Epidemiological population based investigation (conscript health investigation) comparing aggregated data of four cross-sectional studies. SUBJECTS: Four cohorts of 18 year-old males (1985: n = 50,475, 1990: n = 47,463, 1995: n 39,275, 2000: n = 43,503), in total n = 180,716. METHODS: Measurements of height and weight were performed during the nationwide conscript health investigation. BMI was calculated and overweight was defined as BMI > or = 25.00 kg/m2 and obesity as BMI > or = 30.00 kg/m2. Besides height and weight data, information on place of residence of the young men was used for the study. Chi-squared and Student's t-test were calculated to test group differences with respect to their statistical significance. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight increased from 10.9% to 15.5% and of obesity from 1.8% to 4.9% during the observation period. A significant regional trend was found with the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Eastern part of Austria (p < 0.001). BMI was 22.12 +/- 0.34 kg/m2 (mean +/- SD) in 1985 and showed a significant increase (p < 0.001) during the study period to 22.71 +/- 0.25 kg/m2. CONCLUSION: Overweight and obesity increased remarkably in young males in Austria between the years 1985 and 2000. The steepest increase was found in the prevalence of obesity and in the Western part of Austria. A significant regional difference could be documented during the whole study period.

Intradermal skin testing in Icelandic horses in Austria.

Icelandic horses in Austria are commonly affected by an allergic inflammatory skin disease recurring during the summer seasons, which shares characteristic features with Culicoides hypersensitivity. However, the causative agents have not yet been identified. Therefore, intradermal skin testing (IDST) with a standardised extract of Culicoides variipennis and 21 other allergens relevant within Austria was performed in 81 Icelandic horses. All horses included into the study were treated regularly with ivermectin and had no history of administration of anti-inflammatory drugs. Forty-three of these horses were affected by summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (SSRD). No history or signs of any other disease were evident in any horse. Pruritic dermatitis due to ectoparasites, bacteria and dermatophytes were ruled out by means of fungal culture, skin scraping and biopsy. Culicoides variipennis antigens evoked a positive cutaneous reaction in 1 of 38 normal and 3 of 43 SSRD horses at the proposed dilution of 1:50,000 or 1:25,000, and in 24 of 38 normal and 13 of 43 SSRD horses at a dilution of 1:10,000. Furthermore, no significant differences in onset or intensity of skin reactions to the 21 other allergens, including pollens, moulds, mites and insects, except deerfly and horsefly, were obvious between the 2 groups. Efficiency (percentage of correct results) for the used antigens in the skin test was 0.47-0.60. Maximal sensitivity was 0.51. Altogether, 38 of 43 SSRD horses and 28 of 38 normal horses were positive 4 h after allergen administration. The divergence between IDST results and manifestation of clinical signs found in this study underlines the difficulties associated with establishing a skin test protocol in horses within a geographic area. Whether the outcome of this study would have been influenced significantly by using Culicoides spp. present in Austria has to be clarified in future research.

[Use of electrocardiographic placement control of central venous catheters in Austria].

After placement of a central venous catheter the correct position of the catheter tip has to be verified. The use of intravascular ECG tracing via a guide-wire or via the saline-filled lumen of the catheter enables immediate and safe control of the position. Only if complications (e.g. pneumothorax) are suspected, further clinical and radiological diagnostics are necessary. Up to now, no data on the routine clinical use of this method are available. In April 1998, a semi-structured questionnaire was sent to the 518 heads of anaesthesiological, surgical and medical departments in Austria (33% of the questionnaires were returned). The subclavian (56%) and internal jugular veins (35%) are most frequently used for catheter insertion in Austria. Verification of the catheter tip placement by ECG-guidance is used in only 8% of cases, while radiographs are performed in most cases. Uncertainty with respect to forensic consequences of using the ECG-guidance for control of the catheter tip placement and the possible necessity of an additional radiograph are the main problems seen by the heads of the departments. After placement of a central venous line, measures for the verification of the catheter tip and measures for the control of possible complications have to be considered separately. Intravascular ECG tracing is unable to detect complications. Concerning the verification of the catheter tip position many studies confirm the easy handling, relevance of results and cost savings for this method. Its use for the control and documentation of the tip location is considered a standard. In Austria the consequent use of the method would offer the chance for significant reductions of treatment costs.

Regional differences in mortality: a comparison between Austria, Hungary and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Important differences in mortality rates exist even between neighbouring countries. This should facilitate the identification of the lifestyle parameters underlying these differences. The mortality rates obtained in Hungary, Austria and Switzerland were compared. METHODS: The mortality rates for all-cause, total cardiovascular, total cancer and stroke mortality were obtained from a special tape from WHO. Nutritional data were obtained from FAO food balance sheets and from dietary surveys. Gompertz and polynomial equations were calculated from the age-specific mortality rates. FINDINGS: Great differences in mortality exist between the three countries. In the period from 1950 until 1995 mortality decreased in Austria and Switzerland, but increased in Hungary. In men, total cancer and total cardiovascular mortality also increased markedly in Hungary during the last 20 years. Hungary has a lower dietary P/S ratio, a higher level of animal/vegetal fat and a lower consumption of fruit than Austria and Switzerland, combined with a high level of salt consumption. The level of cigarette smoking is similar in Hungary and Switzerland. The increase in mortality rate in Hungary is less pronounced in women than in men. INTERPRETATION: The major differences in lifestyle between the three countries concern socio-economic and nutritional patterns. Epidemiological evidence favours nutrition as the most important determinant of the differences in mortality rates between the three countries.

[Projections in the incidence of dementia in Austria for the years 1951 to 2050].

Because of the increasing life expectancy it is generally assumed that the number of demented individuals will steeply rise in the next decades. Dementia is a main reason for requiring extensive nursing care. Therefore, estimations of the future number of demented subjects in Austria are necessary for planning appropriate services. Since the age structure of the Austrian population has already changed during the last decades, the development of the number of demented individuals during the last five decades is compared with the estimations for the next five decades. These estimations are based on the population projections for Austria and on all available international meta-analyses of prevalence and incidence surveys. Estimations of the number of people suffering from dementia and of those developing dementia within one year are presented for the period between 1951 and 2050. In 1951, the number of dementia sufferers was 35,500; by 2050 this number will increase to 233,800. At present, 90,500 elderly people with dementia live in Austria. Thus, in the next decades, the number of people suffering from dementia will rise more steeply than the in the past. If the projected life expectancy leads to a prolonged duration of illness the number of dementia sufferers will be markedly higher. On the other hand, the working force will decrease in the next decades. Therefore, while in 1951 there were 120 employable persons per demented person, in 2050 there will be only 17 employable persons per demented person. Extensive planning of the future care of demented people is an urgent necessity.

[Health care services for women with postpartum mental disorders--assessment of current options in Austria].

For many women childbirth is one of the most impressive life-events, but this period of life may also be a phase of increased vulnerability for psychiatric illness. 10-15% of women develop a postnatal depression (PND) after the birth of a child, and 1@1000 suffer from a puerperal psychosis. Despite the high prevalence, with estimates of approximately 10,000 women suffering annually from postnatal psychiatric disturbances in Austria, there has been a lack of medical attendance for these women and their children. Motivated by a research initiative from the EU on transcultural aspects of postnatal depression (PND) with 17 participating research centers world-wide, a research team at the Vienna University Clinic for Psychiatry initiated the investigation of conditions for mother-child-admissions at 31 psychiatric wards in Austria. These departments were asked about the possibility of conjoint mother-child-admission, and their experiences with this form of admission; 23 departments (74.2%) provided information. A total of 12 departments responded that they theoretically accepted mothers with their babies; however, they also indicated that until now these conjoint admissions had been performed only very rarely or not at all. Based on many years of experience in the field of postpartum mental health in Great Britain, British researchers have developed guidelines for need assessment and health care provision for women with postpartum psychiatric disorders. With the help of these guidelines, the Viennese team of psychiatrists tried to develop fundamental concepts for need assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients suffering from postpartum mental illness in Austria.

Cost-benefit calculations of vaccinations against measles and mumps in Austria.

The analysis of combined measles-mumps vaccination in Austria showed that this measure is highly profitable in economical respect. The benefit-cost ratio Qc amounts to 2.65 without and 4.48 with consideration of the so-called "nursing vacation", a one week's vacation which is being granted in Austria to employed mothers for the nursing of a sick child once a year. The benefit-cost difference Dc amounts to AS 672.85 OF 1,681.90 respectively, per child. Twelve years after the beginning of vaccination of 100,000 one year old children per year which corresponds roughly to the birth rate in Austria an amount of 63 mill. AS can be saved, if "nursing vacations" are not considered. This amount will be even 528 mill. AS, if "nursing vacations" are taken in account.

Safety of hypertonic hyperoncotic solutions--a survey from Austria.

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic hyperoncotic solutions (HHS), composed of 7.2 to 7.5% sodium chloride and 6 to 10% dextran or hydroxyethyl starch, are able to restore the disturbed macro- and microcirculation in hypovolemic states within a short period of time. Even small amounts of HHS induce a relevant fluid shift from the extravasal into the intravasal space, and the use of HHS has thus been recommended in acute hypovolemia and hypovolemic shock (principle of "small-volume resuscitation"). Recently, attention has also focused on the treatment of elevated intracranial pressure using HHS. Austria is the only European country where market authorization of HHS was already obtained several years ago and where HHS have been widely used in clinical routine for a comparatively long time. This offers the unique possibility of evaluating, for the first time, the safety profile of HHS solutions. In this study, we analyzed the reported adverse drug reactions of HHS in a large number of applications. METHODS: Marketing and pharmacovigilance data as well as other relevant information obtained in Austria during the years 1991 to 2000, were used for analysis of safety aspects of HHS applications in routine clinical practice. RESULTS: From 1991 to 2000, four adverse drug reactions related to HHS were reported, none of which was fatal. Out of these, 3 have to be regarded as anaphylactoid/anaphylactic reactions to hydroxyethyl starch. In one case an extreme overdose was infused resulting in a hyperosmolar syndrome. In the same time period approximately 56,000 HHS units were used in Austria in about 18,500 to 37,000 patients. With these numbers, the frequency of adverse drug reactions related to the prescribed application of HHS can be calculated: approximately 5 adverse drug reactions per 100,000 HHS units used; approximately 8-16 adverse drug reactions per 100,000 HHS-treated patients. CONCLUSION: Austrian experience with the use of a large number of HHS in clinical routine during nearly a decade indicates that the prescribed application of a combination of hydroxyethyl starch and hypertonic sodium chloride has a low potential for complications.
