OBJECTIVE: To report the relative frequency of the asthenopic complaints in an african black population. METHODS: Data from 184 records of African black subjects with asthenopic complaints and a normal ocular examination between January 1996 and December 1998 were considered. RESULTS: There were 87 males (47.3%) and 97 females (52.7%). The mean age was 24.6 +/- 9.2 years with a sex ratio of 1:1. Asthenopic symptoms were: headache (47.0%), ocular pain (37.0%), tearing (24.5%), blurred vision (23.4%), photophobia (20.1%), burning sensation (12.5%), foreign-body sensation (8.7%), red eyes (4.3%) and diplopia (4.3%). Asthenopic subjects with headache had more associated symptoms. Headache was 2-3 times more frequently associated with the presence of tearing, foreign-body sensation and burning complaints than others. CONCLUSION: African black people seem to present the same asthenopic symptoms as in other races. Headache is the main symptom. Tearing, foreign-body and burning sensation are the most common complaints associated with asthenopic headache.
Fifty young adults were interviewed about the asthenopic symptoms experienced in the preceding 6 months by means of a questionnaire; they then underwent ophthalmic investigation. We established the frequency of occurrence of single asthenopic symptoms and looked for their prevalence in subgroups determined by objective findings such as phorias, different accommodation widths, different fusional vergence widths, and others. The frequencies of single complaints were: headache 42/50 (84%), ocular pain 17/50 (34%), foreign body sensation 25/50 (50%), red eyes 22/50 (44%), photophobia 24/50 (48%), double vision 5/50 (10%), difficulties when changing fixation distance 21/50 (42%). We did not find any obvious preference for one of the symptoms in any of the subgroups mentioned above.

Eighty volunteer computer operators were examined experimentally under the conditions of working with different-type video monitors, i.e. electron-beam (EB), liquid-crystal (LC), including different visual loads (typing, computer games, and gaze fixation). Experiments lasted for as long as 6 hours. The absolute accommodation volume (AAV), relative accommodation reserve (RAR) and ergograms were comparatively evaluated. A lower AAV was registered in all types of visual loads under the conditions of using different-type monitors, and it made up 0.27-1.08 diopters. A maximum reduction of AAV was detected for gaze fixation and while working with liquid-crystal monitors. The RAR reduction ranged from 0.31 to 0.63 diopters. A maximum RAR reduction was noted for gaze fixation and while using the electronic-beam monitors. The nature of changed ergography curves occurred within the interval between I and IIb types of ergograms. In case of typing, the ergogram deviations were registered to a greater extent for the liquid-crystal monitors. The value of deviations for computer games was bigger, at the experiment end, for EB rather than for LC.

A young woman presented with complaints of reading difficulty. An examination revealed that the patient had Duane's Retraction Syndrome--Type III, which affected her right eye. We prescribed yoked prism base left and additional base-in prism for the right eye in a successful attempt to alleviate the patient's symptoms.
Remote results from 1.5 to 5 years, after sclera-enhancing operations on occasion of myopia in 51 children, of them 17 with congenital, 13--early acquired and 21--school myopia, have shown stabilization of school myopia in 88.9%, congenital--in 87% and early acquired--in 75% of cases; a rise of visual acuity in school and early acquired myopia is observed in a greater number of cases, than in congenital myopia. Scleroplasty is one of main methods to prevent blindness and poor vision in children with myopia.
