[Fetal anophthalmos. Problem of the prenatal diagnosis: a case report].

We report a case of anophthalmia discovered after birth and discuss the need to resolve diagnostic difficulties and determine prognosis. This is an exceptional malformation which is particularly difficult to manage. It often occurs in the context of a complex malformation syndrome. Recent imaging techniques including magnetic resonance imaging help determine the degree of malformation and provide useful information for giving genetic advice to parents.

[The use of latex expanders for the formation of a conjunctival space in anophthalmos].

Methods for conjunctival cavity plasty in anophthalmia and their advantages and drawbacks are discussed. The known methods do not always bring about satisfactory results (ensure a stable position of the prosthesis in the cavity). A method for conjunctival cavity formation with latex expanders is proposed. Original designs of expanders for the conjunctival cavity were used. The method is interesting and promising for conjunctival cavity plasty in anophthalmia when the cavity is shrunk.

Total retinal degeneration in apparent anophthalmos of the Syrian hamster.

Anophthalmia in the Syrian hamster was found to result from an extensive degeneration of retinal tissue and tissues derived from the retina. Eyes of affected animals were normal at the twelfth day of gestation (the average gestation period in the Syrian hamster is 16 days). However, the retina of these eyes showed rapid and extensive degeneration during the first two weeks after birth. In adults, the sclera-choroid complex was the only prominent structure of the original eye, with an occasional remnant of deteriorated lens.

[Effects of reconstructive operations on the development of systemic autosensitization in patients with anophthalmos].

The role of systemic autoimmune reactions to organ-specific antigens (DNA and collagen) was studied in patients with anophthalmia before and after interventions on the stump and conjunctival cavity making use of autotransplants and synthetic implants. A total of 220 analyses of the serum were performed in the main group and 50 in the control. Autosensitization was detected in 10 (18.2%) patients. The data were processed using Statistica software. A series of previous reconstructive operations is a factor promoting the development of systemic autosensitization to collagen. A trend to an increase in the levels of antibodies to DNA and collagen was observed in the presence of cicatricial changes in adjacent tissues, foreign bodies, cartilaginous implants, and fistulas causing a latent fibrous reaction. The type of intervention (use of implants or autotransplants) does not affect the level of antibodies to DNA and collagen.

[Congenital serous cyst of the orbit with anophthalmos].

The authors reported a case of orbital congenital serous cyst with anophtalmos. It was a third type of Duke Elder classification. Although it looked sporadic, this malformation is hereditary and due to a disharmony between optic cup growth and differenciation. Ultrasonography and scanner could confirm the diagnosis and helped to discard orbital and eyelid angioma and meningocele. After excision, a prosthesis must be adapted in the orbit.

[Anophthalmos. Sequela of an unusual birth injury].

A child is reported who was born with complete absence of the right globe after instrumental delivery. The delivery was difficult and had been carried out by application of suction cup and forceps. The clinical examination at our hospital some days after the delivery suggested accidental enucleation during birth. In addition to anophthalmia, only minor laceration of the conjunctiva, a hematoma of the lids and a skin wound close to the right cheek were present, but no further orbital injuries. In earlier literature, similar injuries with luxation of the globe during delivery have been reported but they were usually associated with heavy periorbital injuries.
