Oxfendazole: anthelmintic activity in calves artificially infected with six species of nematodes and in calves naturally infested with tapeworms.

In a series of 5 trials, in which 115 artificially infected calves were used, larval anthelmintic tests were done to assess the activity of oxfendazole at 4, 5 mg/kg against all 3 parasitic stages of 6 species of namatodes. An efficacy of over 98% was demonstrated against the 4th stage larvae (L4), 5th and adult stages of Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia pectinata, Bunostomum Phlebotomum and Oesophagostomum radiatum and the 3rd larval stage (L3) of H. placei and C. pectinata. Against the L3 of O. ostertagi, B. phlebotomum and O. radiatum efficacies of 81,7%, 92,4% and 97,3% respectively were shown. Against Dictyocaulus viviparus adult, 5th, L4 and L3 efficacies were recorded of 100%, 96,7%, 95,4% and 89,1% respectively. A test for ovicidal activity confirmed that cattle can be safely moved to clean pasture 8 hours after dosing. Complete removal of strobilia of Moniezia benedeni from 25 naturally infested calves followed a dose rate of oxfendazole at 4,5 mg/kg, but of these each of 4 calves retained one scolex.

[Human tapeworm findings in Gottwaldov].

The author deals with the problems of taeniidoses in the region of Gottwaldov and informs about findings of taeniidoses in the parasitological laboratory at OHS Gottwaldov from 1956-1978. During this period of time 31,502 patients were examined because of enteroparasites, and taeniarhynchosis was determined in 355 cases (1.1%). Taenia sodium was only shown in 2 cases. Hymenolepis nana was shown with 18 patients (0.06%). Furthermore 3 cases of echinococcoses in human beings are described, once in the heart, twice in the lungs. In the text there is also a reference to the experiences in treatment. The author points out that taeniidoses have been registered (Surveillance method) in Czechoslovakia since 1979.

[Tapeworm fauna of gallinaceans (Galliformes) of Vietnam].

131 specimens of 3 species of Galliformes from Vietnam were investigated (Gallus gallus dom., G. g. jaboruillei, Francolinus pintadeanus and Lophora nycthemerus). In them 9 species of cestodes were found as follows: Davainea proglottina (Davainea, 1860), Cotugnia digonopora (Pasquale, 1890), Raillietina tetragona (Molin, 1858), R. echinobothrida (Megnin, 1880), Skrjabinia cesticillus (Molin, 1858), Paroniella tinguiana Tubangui et Masilungan, 1937, Amoebotaenia cuneata (Linstow, 1872), Echinolepis carioca (Magalhaes, 1898), Dilepidoides bauchei (Joyeux, 1924). In domestic hens there were found all 9 species of cestodes while in wild Galliformes--only 7, which are mentioned for them for the first time.

The tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus alters the activity and response, but not the predation susceptibility of infected copepods.

Cyclops abyssorum and Cyclops scutifer were experimentally infected with procercoids of the cestode Schistocephalus solidus, then examined for altered behavior and susceptibility to predation, respectively. Infected C. abyssorum differed from uninfected controls in their initial response to disturbance and their degree of activity but only when they harbored procercoids that were potentially infective to the next host. To examine the possible consequence of the altered behavior for susceptibility to predation, three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) were offered equal numbers of infected and uninfected C. scutifer. Infected copepods were not preyed upon significantly more than controls.

[Tapeworms in the brain--a current problem in Norway?].

Cestode infections of the human central nervous system are reviewed. These conditions represent a major health problem in many countries, and neurocysticercosis is one of the major causes of epilepsy worldwide. Neither cysticercosis nor echinococcosis are endemic to Norway. Therefore, little attention has been paid to these conditions. However, owing to increased travelling and immigration, occasional cases are found. Five cases of neurocysticercosis and one case of presumable brain echinococcosis have recently been diagnosed in our department.
