Haplotypes and allele frequencies of 12 Y-STRs were examined in a population sample of 381 Japanese male volunteers. A total of 315 haplotypes were identified, of which 288 haplotypes were unique, and 18, three, three, two, one and one were found in two, three, four, five, eight and 18 individuals, respectively. Total gene diversity was 0.997.
Many X-chromosome short tandem repeats (X-STRs) have been validated for forensic use even if further studies are needed on allele frequencies and mutation rates to evaluate the extent of polymorphism in different populations and to establish reference databases useful for forensic applications and for anthropological studies. A single multiplex reaction of seven X-STRs, which includes the DXS6789, HUMARA, DXS10011, DXS7423, HPRTB, DXS6807, DXS101 loci, is presented and their allele frequency distribution in a large population sample including 556 subjects (268 females and 288 males) analysed by five forensic laboratories of Central and Northern Italy is shown. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of a single amplification/detection reaction involving seven markers of the X chromosome, which can be fruitfully used in complex kinship analysis.
Allele frequencies for the fifteen STRs included in the GenePrint PowerPlex kit were determined in 870 unrelated individuals from Polish population. All loci met Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Exact tests disequilibrium analysis revealed no departures from independence out of 105 pair-wise comparisons. The combined MP and PE for all 15 loci are 6.00x10(-17) and 0.999999, respectively.
Eight Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (STRs)-DYS19, DYS389-I, DYS389-II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393 and DYS385-were typed in a population sample (n=255) of unrelated Sicilian males from nine different towns on the main island and from the island of Pantelleria.
Allele frequencies, together with some parameters of forensic interest were estimated for nine STRs included in the AmpF/STR Profiler kit (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D13S317, FGA, TH01, TPOX and vWA) in a sample of 215 unrelated individuals from Cartagena (Colombia). For all loci, no significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were observed. Comparative analysis results between our data and those from other Colombian and African population samples revealed significant differences, except with two Colombian Caribbean Coast sub-regions.
Allele frequencies for 15 short tandem repeats (STRs) autosomal loci (D8S1179, D21S11, D7S820, CSF1PO, D3S1358, TH01, D13S317, D16S539, D2S1338, D19S433, vWA, TPOX, D18S51, D5S818 and FGA, included in the AmpFLSTR Identifiler, Applied Biosystems) were studied in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela and were compared with other published Latin-American populations for the same loci. Population and forensic parameters were estimated.
Allele frequencies for 10 STRs included in the AmpFlSTR SGM Plus kit were determined in a population sample of 668 unrelated individuals living in western Poland. All loci met Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Exact tests disequilibrium analysis revealed two departures from independence out of 45 pairwise comparisons. The combined matching probability (MP) and power of exclusion (PE) for all 15 loci are 2.56 x 10(-13) and 0.99996, respectively.
Allele frequencies for 15 STRs (D3S1358, vWA, FGA, D8S1179, D21S11, D18S51, D5S818, D13S317, D7S820, THO1, Penta E, D16S539, CSF1PO, Penta D and TPOX) in the PowerPlex-16 System (Promega Corporation) were derived from a sample of 1475 unrelated Greek Cypriot individuals from the island of Cyprus.
Haplotype data were obtained from a sample of 173 unrelated male individuals from Cartagena (Colombia), for 16 Y-chromosome STRs (DYS19, DYS385, DYS389 I, DYS389 II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS460, DYS461, DYS635, GATA H4 and GATA A10). No shared haplotypes were observed, demonstrating the usefulness and informative power of these Y-STRs in male lineage identification in Cartagena. Genetic distances were calculated using previously published haplotype data and the lowest values were found for the comparisons with samples of Iberian origin.
The allele frequency distributions of 21 autosomal loci contained in the AmpFlSTR Identifiler, the Powerplex 16 and the FFFL multiplex PCR kits, was studied in 953 unrelated individuals from Nepal. Several new alleles (i.e. not yet reported in the NIST Short Tandem Repeat DNA Internet DataBase [http://www.cstl.nist.gov/biotech/strbase/]) have been detected in the process.
Allele frequencies for 13 short tandem repeat (D3S1358, vWA, D21S11, D18S51, D5S818, D13S317, D7S820, TH01, TPOX, D16S539, CSF1PO, D8S1179 and FGA) loci were determined in a sample of 325 unrelated individuals from the population of the Amazon of Belém, Brazil. These loci are the most commonly used in forensic and paternity testing. The forensic parameters investigated presented high values. The power of discrimination and the probability of exclusion for these 13 STRs are 99.999999999992% and 99.9998%, respectively. In conclusion, these 13 markers are suitable for forensic analysis and paternity tests of the Amazonian population.
Allele frequencies for the 15 tetranucleotide short tandem repeat loci contained in the AmpFlSTR Identifiler kit were obtained from a population sample of 219 unrelated individuals born in the western part of Romania.
Allele frequencies and haplotypes of the 17 Y-chromosome STRs loci, namely DYS19, DYS385a/b, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS635 (YGATA C4), and YGATA H4 were determined in a sample of 131 healthy unrelated males from the Lassa area of Tibet Autonomy Region of China (SW China). In 131 samples 106 different haplotypes were encountered, of which 105 were observed only once. The overall haplotype diversity was 0.9998. The results demonstrate that these loci will be very useful for human identification in forensic cases and paternity tests in the Lassa region.
We designed new primers that give shorter amplicons for Penta D and Penta E for easy separation on native polyacrylamide gels. 112 unrelated Northern Thai men were typed. A total of nine and eight-teen alleles was found for Penta D and Penta E, respectively. Both loci showed a high power of discrimination (Penta D: 0.927; Penta E: 0.966; both loci combined: 0.9975) as reported in other populations. Penta D met Hardy-Weinberg expectations, whereas Penta E did not, maybe because of the small sample size in relation to the large number of alleles of this locus.

In order to delimit and understand the evolution of the Meteoriaceae, we provide phylogenetic analyses using the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA in combination with two plastid markers, trnL-F and psbT-H. In contrast to the widely used trnL-F region, the psbT-H gene cluster, coding for proteins of photosystem II, has been rarely used to address systematic questions among the different land plant lineages. To overcome the problem of potential ambiguous alignments of non-coding DNA regions, the data were independently analyzed using direct optimization. The comparison and evaluation of the obtained results showed that the inferred cladograms based on the different phylogenetic approaches are very similar, with only minor differences. In combination with morphological characters, generic relationships as well as taxonomic and nomenclatural problems, especially regarding the key genera Meteorium and Papillaria are discussed in detail. New insights into generic relationships of the Meteoriaceae are provided, such as the exclusion of the monospecific southern South American genera Ancistrodes and Cryphaeophilum, which are subsequently transferred to the Hookeriaceae and Cryphaeaceae, respectively. Phylogenetic reconstructions using maximum likelihood as well as parsimony approaches reveal that at the familial level the Meteoriaceae s. l. are polyphyletic, if the formerly recognized "Trachypodaceae" are considered as a separate family. Based on our results we favor the synonym of the Trachypodaceae with the Meteoriaceae.
