[Microbial contamination of drinking water by a polyamide feedpipe].

An incident is described with high colony counts in the drinking water from a well. The well was disinfected with sodium hypochlorite for several times, but without permanent success. After that the search for the reason of the high colony counts started. It turned out that the polyamide rising-pipe produced the microbial growth. Besides the colony increase in the water there was a microbial growth upon the surface of the polyamide pipe as well. When a high grade steel pipe was installed instead of the polyamide pipe there was no colony increase in the water any more.

[Hygienic evaluation of hydrophobic turgid Perlite and the materials of powder composition used in water supply systems].

Sanitary, hygienic, toxicologic, pathomorphologic and genetic studies revealed that hydrophobic pearlites g A-1 and g A-2 and the material from powder composition of the brand of zh g p1, 5 d 2.5 had no unfavourable effect on physicochemical water characteristics, warm-blooded animals and poorly organized organisms. Hydrophobic pearlites were recommended for application in water reservoirs for the removal of petroleum films and the material from powder composition of the above brand for manufacturing cocks, sleeves, showers and other devices for water supply systems used for economic and drinking purposes.

[Corneal sensitivity in workers in contact with petroleum products].

Evaluation of the corneal sensitivity was carried out in 251 workers who have had a direct contact with petrol and its derivates and in 45 persons of a control group. It was established that the corneal sensitivity--especially in its central region--was distinctly lowered in persons employed in the department of asphalt oxidation and cleaning of sewages. This concerned particularly the workers with a long-lasting, many years service.

[Socioeconomic status and hygiene habits of the members of a rural community from the province of Habana].

A study is made of the socioeconomic conditions, environmental sanitation, and hygienic habits in the members of a rural community in Havana province. This was compared with the results of a stool culture analysis made to all inhabitants of this locality in order to determine the degree of infestation by intestinal parasites. It was found that sanitation conditions are good, which explains the low prevalence of helminths. The greatest proportion of parasitized people show inappropriate habits of personal hygiene, which explains that most of them are due to protozoa.

Evaluation of a sanitation programme using eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides in household yard soils as indicators.

Soil samples were analysed for the presence of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs as indicators of environmental pollution in household yards in Maputo, Mozambique, with the objective of evaluating the impact of a programme for the promotion of improved latrine construction. The locations for soil sample collection were defined by a random grid on which household activities were mapped. In addition, parasitological examinations were carried out amongst household residents. No significant difference was found between the type of latrine in use and the presence of Ascaris eggs in the soil or human Ascaris infection. Households with at least one infected person appeared more likely to have Ascaris eggs in the yard. It was notable that egg counts around the latrines were only slightly greater than in other areas of the yard and less than those immediately in front of the dwelling. This is taken to indicate that faecal pollution of the household environment is due more to promiscuous defecation than to poor construction or maintenance of the latrines. The findings highlight the need to complement sanitation 'hardware' with the necessary health education 'software'. Ascaris eggs are useful indicators but robust standardized methods are needed for their extraction from household soils.
