[Simultaneous determination of fluoroacetamide and tetramine by gas chromatography].

A simple and fast gas chromatographic method was used for the simultaneous determination of fluoroacetamide and tetramine. The samples were extracted with acetone and the extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography. A megabore capillary column coated with FFAP and a nitrogen-phosphorous detector were used to obtain satisfactory selectivity and sensitivity. The detection limits and average recoveries were 5 ng and 69.1% for fluoroacetamide and 1 ng and 89.8% for tetramine.

Role of male scent glands in improving poison bait acceptance in female rats, Rattus norvegicus.

The poison (Zn3P2) bait mixed with preputial gland and cheek gland extract was highly effective as compared to poison bait mixed without the scent gland extract, in increasing the food consumption and mortality rate in rats. Among these two scent glands, preputial gland extract was more effective than cheek gland extract in increasing the bait acceptance. The scent gland extract mixed with poison bait was capable of improving the poison bait acceptance. A 10% concentration of scent gland extract was more effective than 5% concentration in acceptance of poison bait. The results suggest efficacy of scent gland in improving the poison bait acceptance.

Bioassay of three sulphur containing compounds as rat attractant admixed in cereal-based bait against Rattus rattus Linn.

Three sulphur containing compounds, carbon disulphide, dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl sulphide were bioassayed for preference after admixing them in cereal base as ready bait block for use against commensal rat, R. rattus (wild type) in four way choice chamber system. Rat preference for different baits was also studied with automatic recording animal activity meter. Rats exhibited attractancy to the baits at 0.005% concentration of all the three compounds while at 0.01% concentration they have showed repellency. Dimethyl sulphide at 0.005% concentration showed better attractancy towards both sexes of rat.

[Rat extermination in Grozny during emergency situation in the year of 2000].

The main factors leading to the great amounts of rats and small myo-morphous rodents in Grozny were the prolonged absence of deratization measures carried out on the necessary scope, the destruction of buildings, which led to the loss of their impenetrability for rodents and the ensuing spread of rats and mice in all habitats, the storage of foodstuffs in temporary stores which did not ensure their protection from rodents. The present article deals with the organizational measures aimed at carrying out deratization works in Grozny after the completion of the antiterrorist operation, as well as the tactics and methods of such works under the conditions of extreme situation.

Enhancing oxidation of TNT and RDX in wastewater: pre-treatment with elemental iron.

Munitions manufacturing wastewater is commonly treated by adsorption to activated carbon. We are proposing a new munitions manufacturing wastewater treatment system consisting of a reductive pre-treatment process and subsequent Fenton's oxidation to mineralize energetic compounds such as TNT and RDX. The pre-treatment involves reduction of electron-withdrawing nitro groups of TNT and RDX with elemental iron. The iron-treated explosives are then oxidized by Fenton's reagent through the addition of H2O2. The objective of this work is to investigate the feasibility of using elemental iron to convert TNT and RDX to reduction products which may be more oxidizable in subsequent Fenton's oxidation. Results of batch reduction experiments with elemental iron showed complete removal of TNT and RDX and formation of the reduction products within 60 minutes. Results of column experiments showed a rapid and complete removal of TNTand RDX within 9.7 minutes retention time. Fitting observed effluent concentrations to a one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation, we were able to predict the concentration profiles of TNT and RDX in the iron column and calculate the iron column length required for the desired removal. The results of Fenton's oxidation experiments showed that iron pre-treatment enhanced both the rate and extent of TNT and RDX mineralization by Fenton's oxidation.

[New applications of FTIR micro-spectroscopy in the field of forensic science].

The new applications of FTIR micro-spectroscopy in the field of forensic science are presented, and the process and results of infrared spectra measurements of many kinds of samples, such as paint, fiber, dye, plastic, rubber, ink and drug have been discussed in detail, including two real cases. Various sampling accessories (Diamond cell, Attenuated total reflection and Micro manipulator system) and different determination modes (transmission and reflectance) are used according to the properties of samples.

Effect of supplementary feeding of vitamin K1 on difethialone treated Indian gerbil, Tatera indica Hardwicke in laboratory.

Two dosages (1 and 2 mg/kg) of vitamin K1 supplementation for 5 and 15 days were given to Indian gerbil T. indica fed on difethialone bait (0.0025%) for one day. The results indicated that the lower dosage could not reverse the anticoagulation process, however the period of mortality was considerably increased from 3-9 days (in control) to 5-14 days (5 days supplementation regime). Subsequently when the vitamin K1 dosage was doubled and given for 15 days, there was 100% reversal of anticoagulation process and all the test gerbils became normal within a month of poisoning with difethialone bait.
