Samples of water and snails collected through aleatory scoops in a small dam were done to obtain data concerning the physical and chemical characteristics of the water and their possible influence on biological aspects of the life cycle of snails. Among the 17 analysed parameters, Alkalinity and Conductivity showed a positive correlation with the density of B. tenagophila (r = +0.224 and r = +0.290), while CO2 and Acidity were negatively correlated with this populacional parameter (r = -0.592 and 0.601). Alkalinity and Total Hardness values were slightly higher than 100 mg/l CaCO3. Chlorides and Conductivity showed means of 94.9 +/- 38.7 and 680.1 +/- 643 microS/cm; these values are very high for that region. Other factors like pH and OD are according to the pattern for provision untreated waters. The density of B. tenagophila declined in the 6th month after a long period of torrential rains and in the rainy summers. In the colder months of the following year the density was higher (until 124 individuals/months/90 scoops). The monthly mean of the diameters of the snails was always larger than 13 mm, reaching 21.4 +/- 4.1 mm, but the mode was about 17 mm. There was no correlation between diameter/density (r = 0.037) and density/temperature (r = 0.065).

This article provides information on the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis, correlating snail foci with human cases using spatial analysis. The locations studied were Merepe III, Pantanal, Salinas, and Socó, comprising 70% of the populated area of Porto de Galinhas. Malacological and parasitological surveys by a CPqAM/ FIOCRUZ team at the location where an epidemic occurred in 2000 identified 15 foci of infected B. glabrata. Human cases were also diagnosed and recorded according to residential block. Spatial analysis was performed using the TerraView computer program and Kernel intensity estimation. Total infection rates, considering all collection stations marked out per location, varied from 15% to 32.4%. The 15 infected B. glabrata foci included 9 in Merepe, 2 in Socó, 3 in Salinas, and 1 in Pantanal. The results suggest a strong spatial trend in the risk of schistosomiais transmission in Salinas and Socó. In Merepe, with the most foci and where foci were closer together, individual focal infection rates were lower. Spatial analysis thus showed less concentration of risk as compared to other locations studied. As for human cases, two high-intensity areas were observed, shown on the map in darker colors.
Adenosine is an important signaling molecule for many cellular events. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is a key enzyme for the control of extra- and intra-cellular levels of adenosine. Activity of ADA was detected in hemolymph of B. glabrata and its optimum assay conditions were determined experimentally. The pH variation from 6.2 to 7.8 caused no significant change in ADA activity. Using adenosine as a substrate, the apparent Km at pH 6.8 was 734 micromols.L(-1). Highest activity was found at 37 degrees C. Standard assay conditions were established as being 15 minutes of incubation time, 0.4 microL of pure hemolymph per assay, pH 6.8, and 37 degrees C. This enzyme showed activities of 834 +/- 67 micromol.min(-1).L(-1) (25 degrees C) and 2029 +/- 74 micromol.min(-1).L(-1) (37 degrees C), exceeding those in healthy human serum by 40 and 100 times, respectively. Higher incubation temperature caused a decrease in activity of 20% at 43 degres C or 70% at 50 degrees C for 15 minutes. The ADA lost from 26% to 78% of its activity when hemolymph was pre-incubated at 50 degrees C for 2 or 15 minutes, respectively. Since the ADA from hemolymph presented high levels, it can be concluded that in healthy and fed animals, adenosine is maintained at low concentrations. In addition, the small variation in activity over the 6.2 to 7.8 range of pH suggests that adenosine is maintained at low levels in hemolymph even under adverse conditions, in which the pH is altered.
