Quantos somos? The second national population census of Mozambique.

"Between 1 and 15 of August [1997], Mozambique had its second country-wide population census. This briefing will outline how the census ran--an operation of considerable scale in an extremely poor and war-damaged country--and will also raise some broader questions which relate the census to Mozambique's contemporary politics."

Relative reactivity of the V3 loop PND of HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, D, and F with sera from selected Ugandan localities.

Synthetic peptides comprising the predicted principal neutralizing determinant (PND) in new African and North American HIV-1 clones were tested in ELISA for reactivity with ninety six serum samples from asymptomatic donors in six selected localities in Uganda. Irrespective of the geographical origin of the samples, the majority of the test sera cross-reacted at high intensities with the peptides derived from the North American clone, BRT3.6 (Group B), the Ugandan clone, CUG045, (Group C), and the Romanian clone, FRMA (Group F). The frequency of reactivity of the peptides from BRT3.6, CUG045, and FRMA were within the ranges of 57-100%, 50-100%, and 57-100%, respectively, for the sera collected from these disparate localities. In contrast to these findings, the V3 peptides derived from the other Ugandan isolates showed a more restricted pattern of reactivity with the same serum samples: AUG06c (1-63%), DUG23c (2%), and DUG044 (38-87%). The results from ELISA inhibition assay indicated that the V3 peptide from BRT 3.6, CUG045, and FRMA express closely related antigenic specificities quite distinct from those in AUG06c and DUG044. The residues comprising the PND in BRT 3.6, CUG045, and FRMA appear to be well conserved in the HIV-1 subtypes prevalent in the selected Ugandan locales.

Gossypol blood levels and inhibition of spermatogenesis in men taking gossypol as a contraceptive. A multicenter, international, dose-finding study.

The safety and efficacy of gossypol continues to be controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate gossypol as a contraceptive pill for men at doses lower than those previously prescribed and in men from various ethnic origin. A total of 151 men from Brazil, Nigeria, Kenya, and China were divided into two groups. Both groups received 15 mg gossypol/day for 12 or 16 weeks to reach spermatogenesis suppression. Subjects were then randomized to either 7.5 or 10 mg/day for 40 weeks. In addition, 51 men were enrolled as a control group. In all, 81 subjects attained spermatogenesis suppression. Only one man discontinued treatment because of tiredness. Potassium levels fluctuated within the normal range. FSH increased consistently. Testicular volume decreased, but after discontinuation, values returned to levels not statistically different from admission. Of 19 subjects on the 7.5 mg/day dose group, 12 recovered sperm counts >20 million/mL within 12 months of discontinuing gossypol. In the 10 mg/day group, sperm counts recovered in only 10 of 24 subjects. Eight of the 43 patients remained azoospermic 1 year after stopping gossypol. All men diagnosed with varicocele failed to reverse spermatogenesis suppression. Gossypol blood levels indicated that sperm suppression occurs independently of concentration, whereas spermatogenesis recovery appears to be concentration-dependent. Gossypol may become a medical alternative to surgical vasectomy when the delay in onset of infertility is acceptable. When taken for 1 year, gossypol causes no reduction in sexual desire or frequency of intercourse. The possibility of reversal, occurring in 51% of the men on this regimen within 1 year after stopping gossypol, is an advantage of this compound as compared with surgical sterilization in many parts of the world.

Distribution and prevalence of major risk factors of noncommunicable diseases in selected countries: the WHO Inter-Health Programme.

The Inter-Health Programme was launched in 1986 by WHO, with the collaboration of a coordination centre (National Public Health Institute, Finland) to control and prevent chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) among adults. Programmes for action were organized based on the concept that most major CNCDs share common risk factors and that those that are lifestyle related are modifiable through efficient interventions using multifactorial strategies involving community participation and behaviour changes carried out at the primary health care level. Twelve countries from all WHO Regions have joined the programme. A baseline survey was undertaken in all countries with a common protocol, following the criteria and methods employed in the MONICA Project. Altogether 36815 men and women aged 35-64 years were included in the present analysis from the following Inter-Health countries: Chile, China, Cyprus, Finland, Lithuanian SSR, Malta, Mauritius, Russian SFSR, United Republic of Tanzania, and USA. In addition to individual country analysis, centralized analysis was carried out at the Finnish National Public Health Institute and the Department of Community Health, Kuopio University, Finland. Reported here are the mean values of blood pressure, body mass index, and serum total cholesterol as well as specific prevalences of smoking, hypertension, obesity, and hypercholesterolaemia.

Kipsigis women's preferences for wealthy men: evidence for female choice in mammals?

Factors affecting the choice of a male mate in a polygynous society are examined using data on the Kipsigis people of Kenya. "This paper has two aims: first, to test whether Kipsigis women prefer wealthy men by examining the sequence of marriages among a group of pioneers...who established a settlement in the territory of their enemies (1930-1949); second, to determine whether women suffer reproductively as a result of polygynous marriage."
