Pleomorphic (anaplastic) neuroblastoma in nude mice.

Two pleomorphic (anaplastic) neuroblastomas, from two children aged 1 and 6 years, were transplanted into nude mice. Two noteworthy observations were made. In one case, the transplanted tumor gave rise to a soft-tissue sarcoma. Moreover, in both cases hepatic metastases were associated with a striking modification of murine hepatocytes, resulting in hyperchromatic and dysplastic nuclei. The latter finding was particularly evident in the hepatic areas surrounding all metastases of pleomorphic (anaplastic) neuroblastoma cells.

Pleomorphic adenoma in the periphery of the lung. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A pleomorphic adenoma of the lung recurred after 9 years. The primary tumor consisted mainly of cartilaginous and fibrous elements with a small area of epithelial cell nests, whereas the second one possessed epithelial cell nests with cartilaginous stroma. Immunohistochemical studies showed that both tumors had neoplastic cells with immunoreactive S100, keratin, actin, vimentin, and glial fibrillary acid protein-positive cytoplasm. The primary tumor, which was resected from the periphery of the lung, was not connected with the trachea or the bronchus macroscopically. To our knowledge, the literature contains only six reports of pleomorphic adenoma in the lung.

Leukocyte migration inhibition in relation to nuclear pleomorphism and lymphoid infiltration in breast cancer.

Leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) in patients with breast cancer was examined by using 3 M-KCl tissue extracts of breast tumors. Tumor extracts were obtained from 12 breast carcinomas of various histological types. In 20 of 65 (30.8%) leukocyte preparations from 25 patients with breast cancer migration was inhibited by breast cancer tissue extracts. In 26 leukocyte preparations from eight healthy persons and 22 preparations from eight patients with benign diseases of the breast migration was not inhibited by the breast cancer extracts. In only two of 47 (4.3%) leukocyte preparations from 12 patients with other cancers migration was inhibited by the extracts. The occurrence of LMI was the highest in leukocytes from the patients with breast cancer showing marked nuclear pleomorphism (10/19, 52.6%) or showing marked mononuclear cell infiltration (6/12, 50.0%). These results suggest that 3 M-KCl tissue extracts of breast cancer may contain tumor-associated antigens in solubilized form and that there may be a correlation between LMI and nuclear pleomorphism of cancer cells of the leukocyte donor as well as mononuclear cell infiltration in the tumor of the leukocyte donor.

[2 cases of unusual sites of pleomorphic adenomas in the area of the face].

Two pleomorphic adenomas in the face, an uncommon site, are reported. In both cases the tumors showed a slow growth and one was excessively large. Diagnostic excision showed a pleomorphic adenoma in both cases. A review of the literature shows that mucosal adenomas are common whereas they are uncommon in the face.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the larynx.

A 40-year-old woman was hoarse for five months due to a pleomorphic adenoma in the false vocal cord. The peripheral, ulcerated portion of the tumor had undergone squamous metaplasia, and this was initially misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. For that reason, the patient received radiation treatment, but the tumor remained unchanged. It was then locally excised, and the patient was still free of disease 14 years later. This case illustrates the hazard of misinterpreting squamous metaplasia in pleomorphic adenoma, the resistance of this tumor to irradiation, and the satisfactory long-range response to local excision.

Pleomorphic (anaplastic) neuroblastoma.

Four very unusual cases of neuroblastoma in children are reported. Clinically, they had a similar presentation: advanced disease at onset, diffuse abdominal spread, poor treatment response, and rapid progression. Pathologically, the four cases were characterized by a striking degree of cellular and nuclear pleomorphism and anaplasia with bizarre and monstrous expressions. Although some authors have referred to the immature ganglion cells found in neuroblastoma as "bizarre ganglion cells," they usually mean the enlarged, maturing neuroblasts that are typical of ganglioneuroblastoma but far from the extreme anaplasia seen in our cases. A correlation between the clinical course and the histological picture could be hypothetically suggested, but additional evidence and confirmation is needed. These cellular aberrations might represent an unsuccessful and impaired attempt at maturation. Independent from prognosis, the definition of anaplastic neuroblastoma is a useful conceptual specification in the study of this tumor and of giant cell and pleomorphic malignant neoplasms of childhood.

Pleomorphic lipoma of the bulbar conjunctiva.

We describe a patient who had most of the histologic features of the pleomorphic lipoma. Floret giant cells and nuclear pyknosis were well demonstrated in this case, and characteristic bubbly nuclear vacuolations were also seen. There was an absence of mitotic activity. The variable size of the adipocytes and nuclear pyknosis and the presence of collagen indicate an atrophying degenerative process in the formation of pleomorphic lipoma.

[A case of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma].

A case of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (Kepes) is reported. This patient was a 12-year-old boy with a history of convulsive seizure. Neurological examination on admission showed no abnormality. Plain CT scan revealed a well defined low density area with calcification in the right frontal lobe. A part of peripheral portion of low density area were well enhanced with contrast media. At operation, there was a cyst containing xanthochromic fluid in the right frontal lobe. A part of cyst well near the cerebral surface was reddish hard. Total removal of nodular tumor and subtotal removal of the cyst wall were performed. He has been doing well for these 3 years following craniotomy and has no deficit without CT evidence of recurrent tumor. Histologically the tumor cells displayed marked pleomorohism. However either necrosis or mitosis were not seen. Frequently these cells had vacuolated or foamy cytoplasm. There were many of the giant cells and multinucleated cells. In some area, these tumor cells were surrounded by a fine network of reticulin fibers. Electron microscopically the tumor cells were occasionally filled with glial filament and lipid granules were seen. Immunoperoxidase technique revealed GFAP in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. This case was considered to be pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma first proposed by Kepes.

Electron microscopy of adipose tissue tumors: comparative features of hibernomas, myxoid and pleomorphic liposarcomas.

Two hibernomas, 16 myxoid, and eight pleomorphic liposarcomas were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Neoplastic cells in hibernomas and the type I cells--adipocytes--in myxoid liposarcomas consistently display abundant lipid droplet populations and prominent basal lamina deposition. Despite some variability in their distribution, these features clearly pertain to the mature and/or maturing characteristics of brown and white adipose cells. On the other hand, the more primitive type II cells of myxoid liposarcomas display highly variable, and occasionally absent, lipid droplet populations and basal lamina deposition. Moreover, the type II cells may also display other features such as prominent cytoplasmic filaments and rough endoplasmic reticulum that, while not characteristic of typical adipose cells, are still consistent with the more primitive mesenchymal cells from which they are assumed to derive. The cells of pleomorphic liposarcomas exhibit a variable lipid droplet population and apparently total absence of basal lamina deposition. Moreover, they often display atypical cell junctions that are neither characteristic for adipose cells nor for the "primitive reticular cells" from which adipocytes presumably derive. These observations would suggest that some "high grade" sarcomas may no be truly "undifferentiated"; rather, they may often display structural characteristics indicative of multiple as well as variable lines of differentiation. Therefore, classifications of such tumors based on quantitatively limited observations may not truly reflect their evident complexities.

Hyaline-cell pleomorphic adenoma. Diagnosis by fine needle aspiration biopsy.

The cytologic, histologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics are presented of a case of hyaline-cell pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate diagnosed by aspiration biopsy. Hyaline cells are commonly found in pleomorphic adenomas of minor salivary gland origin. The lack of cohesiveness of the hyaline cells makes them readily amenable to sampling by fine needle aspiration biopsy. When identified in a neoplasm, these cells are characteristic, and probably diagnostic, of a mixed tumor.

[Sarcomalike patterns in laryngeal carcinoma (pseudosarcoma, carcinosarcoma, spindle-cell-carcinoma, pleomorphic carcioma (author's transl)].

Report on 5 cases of so called carcinosarcomas of the larynx and hypopharynx and review of literature. These polypoid tumors have a small epidermoid carcinomatous part and a major part with sarcoma like appearance. The sarcomatoid tissue resembles to fibrosarcomas or some undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. Observations of a gradual transition from the epithelial tumor cells to cells with a mesodermal appearance show that these tumors are varieties of squamous cell carcinomas (spindle cell or pleomorphic variety) and not "combination"--or "collision-tumors", "carcinosarcomas" or "seudosarcomas". These tumors appear in the larynx predominantly in man, at the same sites and in the same ageclasses as common squamous cell cancers and are not less malignant. The sarcomatoid tissue can arise at the beginning of the disease or at a later stage it can appear or disappear after operation or irradiation. The reason for this change of cellular structure is unknown.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma: report of 5 cases.

Five cases of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma are described. The favorable prognosis of these tumors is confirmed. Thus, two patients had postoperative survival of 9 and 12 years, respectively, and three others are still alive and well, one of them 6 years after the operation. All the cases described until now (17 including the ones described here) have involved patients under 30 years of age. Most of the tumors have been located superficially in the brain with extensive adhesions to the meninges. Usually they have been well demarcated from the brain. Histologically, the tumors showed a marked cellular pleomorphism, including bizarre giant cells, but there were few mitoses and only a slight tendency to necrosis. The tumor tissue contained a dense network of reticulin fibers and many cells contained lipid vacuoles. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was demonstrated in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells.

Aerobic gram-positive pleomorphic rods isolated from dental plaque and gingival crevice.

A typical gram-positive pleomorphic aerobe is Rothia dentocariosa. However, there exist many organisms having similar characteristics (Rothia-like organisms). The purpose of this study is to isolate Rothia dentocariosa and Rothia-like organisms from the healthy and diseased sites of the oral cavity and to clarify the characteristics of those organisms. A total of 342 strains were isolated in this study, and 188 strains were identified as gram-positive pleomorphic rods. Seventy-seven typical strains of 188 isolates were examined physiologically and biochemically, and they were classified as follows: 1) 20 strains of A. viscosus; 2) 3 strains of A. naeslundii; 3) 26 strains of Rothia dentocariosa; 4) 2 strains of Bacterionema matruchotii; 5) 15 strains of Corynebacterium; 6) 7 strains of Nocardia; and 4 unknown strains. The strains of Rothia dentocariosa were mainly isolated from the dental plaque (24 of 26 isolates), and they had the ability to adhere on to the glass surface, and 5 of 26 strains of Rothia dentocariosa showed the ability of gelatin liquefaction.

Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma of the heart metastatic to bone. Report of a case with fine needle aspiration biopsy findings.

Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma is an extremely rare and highly malignant neoplasm. We report an unusual case of a 14-year-old boy with skeletal metastases from a primary cardiac tumor. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of a lytic lesion in the right iliac wing showed a pleomorphic population of clusters and single cells with hyperchromatic nuclei; granular, pink cytoplasm; and isolated, large cells with whiplike or globoid cytoplasmic processes and occasional striations. Histologic, ultrastructural and radiologic features are also presented.

Pleomorphic carcinoma (spindle and giant cell) of the lung.

Pleomorphic carcinoma is a rare, very aggressive subtype of lung cancer that follows the clinical pattern of carcinosarcoma. The tumors tend to present as a peripheral mass frequently showing a mixture of spindle and giant cell features and often are associated with other, more common histologic subtypes of lung carcinoma. Clinical outcome is poor, with median survival of ten months. This article describes an unusual lung tumor (pleomorphic carcinoma) in a patient presenting with explosive symptoms suggesting an infection.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lung--report of a case and review of the literature.

A male patient, aged 36, was found to have lower lobe collapse of the left lung. A smooth vascularized whitish nodular mass obstructing the orifice of left common basal bronchus was noted through bronchoscopic examination. After left lower lobectomy, the histological features of the tumor were indistinguishable from those of the pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland. To our knowledge, only 12 cases of pulmonary pleomorphic adenoma have been reported in the literature.

[Studies on the pleomorphism of trachoma inclusion].

A series of trachoma inclusion color photograph is taken from the conjunctival smears of 48 trachoma cases. These smears were Giemsa-stained and stored in the slide-boxes for more than 30 years with no distinct changes in color. A description is given to the Pleomorphism of trachoma inclusion and its relation to the host cells. According to the gradual morphological changes of Chlamydia trachomatis multiplied in the infected cells, a 5-staged classification for trachoma inclusions is provided which may be benefit to understanding the pleomorphism of the trachoma inclusion and clinical laboratory diagnosis.
