Influence of substrate on the distribution of calcium channels in identified leech neurons in culture.

The Retzius neuron from the leech, growing in culture on the plant lectin concanavalin A as substrate, produces broad flat growth cones and thick bundles of processes. The same cell extends fine straight processes with numerous branches when grown on a laminin-like substrate extracted from leech central nervous system extracellular matrix, referred to as "leech laminin extract." Cells growing on these two different substrates also show marked differences in the pattern of Ca2+ entry following evoked impulses, as detected optically by local changes in absorbance of the Ca2+-sensitive dye arsenazo III. Ca2+ enters the soma and initial segment of Retzius cells grown on both substrates. However, detectable Ca2+ entry only occurs into the processes of cells growing on leech laminin but not of those growing on concanavalin A. Optical recordings of changes in membrane potential made with the voltage-sensitive dye RH 155 taken from cells growing on either substrate indicate that a depolarization initiated in the soma spreads to the most distant processes with little or no distortion in amplitude or time course. This implies that all voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels in the cell membrane are equally activated by depolarizing stimuli. Therefore, the fact that impulses evoke Ca2+ entry into processes of Retzius cells grown on leech laminin extract but not of cells grown on concanavalin A shows that the nature of the growth substrate can affect the number and distribution of their functional Ca2+ channels.

Observation of the internal configuration of rat incisor odontoblasts by scanning electron microscopy using the AODO method.

The internal configuration of rat incisor odontoblasts was studied mainly by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) using the AODO method (low concentration aldehyde prefixation, osmium tetroxide postfixation, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) freeze-fracture, osmium tetroxide maceration). The present SEM findings were compared with the results obtained by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of epon-embedded specimens. The following results were obtained: 1) Functioning odontoblasts were characterized by a concentric, laminar rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) with many long mitochondria interposed. 2) A network of tubular smooth endoplasmic reticulum (sER) was observed in the odontoblast process and distal portion of both functioning and resting odontoblasts. 3) The tubulo-vesicular elements which have been found to present a modified Golgi-GERL organelle with secretory and absorptive functions were demonstrated in both the functioning and resting odontoblasts. Structurally they consist of the sER network and strings of granules and vesicles. 4) Various types of cytoplasmic bodies, e.g., lysosomes, cytosomes and multivesicular bodies, related to the sER were also noted in both functioning and resting odontoblasts. 5) Microapocrine secretion of membranous vesicles of various sizes into the predentin and along the lateral branchings of odontoblast processes in the circumpulpal dentin was observed during the matrix apposition stage of the odontoblasts. The present morphological study revealed the three-dimensional configuration of the intra- and extra-cellular structures related to dentinogenesis by odontoblasts.

Distributing pattern of the bile duct of the caudate lobe on computed tomography with drip infusion cholangiography and its surgical significance.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It is important to recognize the distribution of the bile ducts in the caudate lobe of the liver for the hepato-biliary surgery. To map the spatial relationship between the bile ducts and the liver parenchyma under physiological conditions, we performed an anatomical analysis of them using computed tomography combined with drip infusion cholangiography (DIC-CT). METHODOLOGY: We identified the bile ducts in the caudate lobe, which was divided into the Spiegel lobe, paracaval portion, and caudate process, with DIC-CT. We then investigated their number and confluence pattern in 132 patients without any abnormality in the hilar bile ducts. RESULTS: The mean number of the bile ducts in the caudate lobe was 2.68 per liver. In the Spiegel lobe, the branches drained into the left hepatic duct system in about 83%. The confluence of the paracaval branch was the left hepatic duct, right hepatic duct, and posterior segmental branch, all with the same frequency of approximately 30%. Almost all of the caudate process branches (92.4%) drained into the posterior segmental branch. CONCLUSIONS: DIC-CT is a useful method for the anatomical analysis of the intrahepatic bile ducts under physiological conditions, and we obtained novel and important findings for surgery.

Surgical considerations in aortitis with special emphasis on Takayasu's arteritis.

Aortitis may result in an injury to the aorta or its branches. The inflammatory process that occurs in response to the injury may ultimately result in stenosis or occlusion from fibrosis and dilatation or aneurysm formation from destruction and weakening of the arterial wall. As a result of antibiotics, some diseases known to cause arteritis have declined over the years (most notably syphilis and rheumatic fever). Other systemic diseases not initially thought to have vascular involvement have also been found to be associated with widespread arteritis. All forms of this entity are capable of producing dilatation or aneurysm formation, but only Takayasu's arteritis can produce narrowing or occlusion of the aorta or its branches, with the rare exception of stenosing arteritis, which sometimes follows radiation therapy in childhood. In Takayasu's arteritis, any segment of the aorta, as well as the pulmonary arteries, may be affected. This disease is divided into four types, depending on the location and extent of the arteritis. In Type I, the disease is limited to the aortic arch and its branches. In Type II, the vascular lesions are confined to the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta without involvement of the aortic arch. Type III is mixed, containing features of Types I and II. Type IV is characterized by dilatation and aneurysm formation in the affected vessels and may have pulmonary artery involvement. The four types are described, with their clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and surgical treatment.

[Stress and allostatic load: perspectives in psycho-oncology].

Since its origins as a scientific field back in the late seventies, psycho-oncology has remained notably descriptive. Few conceptual advances have been achieved in the study of psychodynamics and biological underpinnings of psychological adjustment to the experience of cancer. Moreover, the specific aspects of psychopathological responses to cancer, as well as their optimal pharmacological management remain poorly understood. On the other hand, recent years have been characterized by significant progress in the delineation of biological mechanisms of stress and its consequences for the brain, body, and general health. In this paper, we examine the applicability of the concept of allostatic load to the study of stress and psychopathology related to the cancer experience. While homeostasis refers to maintaining specific biological parameters constant, allostasis can be defined as the process of maintaining stability through change. In this context, excessive or dysregulated activity of allostatic (adaptive) systems leads to deleterious effects for the brain (reduced neurogenesis, altered cell death processes, and dendritic branching) and body (increased cardiovascular risk). These damaging effects of cumulated stress have been refered to as the allostatic load, or the cost inflicted to the organism in order to maintain stability. We hypothesize that the concept of allostatic load is particularly relevant to the multiple, repeated and chronic stressors associated with the experience of cancer. In the light of this model, we propose a new classification of psychopathological conditions in psycho-oncology: the cancer-specific stress syndrome, with its three clinical subtypes (depressive, post-traumatic, and dysallostatic). Suggestions are formulated for some biological correlates of psychodynamic processes and for the study of innovative pharmacological approaches in the treatment of stress-related disorders in oncology (anticonvulsants, CRH antagonists, 5HT-1A receptor agonists...).

The number of morphological synapses between neurons does not predict the strength of their physiological synaptic interactions: a study of dendrites in the nematode Ascaris suum.

Previous electrophysiological and anatomical studies of Ascaris suum motor neurons demonstrated a strong correlation between functional interactions and the presence of anatomically defined synapses. However, one example of a physiologically robust synaptic connection was encountered for which no anatomical evidence of direct chemical synapses was found. This involved synaptic transmission from an identified excitatory motor neuron to its inhibitory partner. In this study, pressure injection of horseradish peroxidase or nickel lysine into inhibitory motor neurons revealed numerous spines projecting from the main neuronal process toward the neuromuscular surface that then branched and extended fine, longitudinal processes up to 130 microm in length. Subsequent examination of nickel lysine-injected spines by electron microscopy revealed numerous chemical synapses, including for the first time direct inputs from the excitatory neuron. However, the numbers of synapses from this motor neuron were very small relative to inputs from other identified cells. Thus, direct synapses are unlikely to explain the robust nature of this physiological interaction.

Morphological studies of electrophysiologically-identified myenteric plexus neurons of the guinea-pig ileum.

The morphology of neurons in the myenteric plexus of the guinea-pig ileum has been studied by means of the intracellular application of Procion Yellow. Sixty-six electrophysiologically-unidentified cells showed a great variety of soma shapes and number of processes, the vast majority of the longer of which were circumferentially-orientated. The electrophysiological properties of an additional 47 neurons were ascertained; 29 were neurons with a slow after-hyperpolarization (AH-neurons), 14 showed fast excitatory synaptic potentials (S-neurons) and 4 were of neither category. Twenty-two of the AH-neurons had a smooth soma outline and, on average, each had 5 processes, of which the great majority of long processes were circumferentially-orientated and intraganglionic. The projection ratios of oral:circumferential:aboral processes were 6:61:9. Branching was a prominent feature of the processes. In contrast, a large soma with many broad, short processes was a feature of 8 of 14 S-neurons studied. The average number of processes was 8.6 per cell and relatively more of them were aborally-directed, giving projection ratios of 2:21:7. There was, however, such a variation and overlap in the morphology of AH- and S-neurons that it was not possible to achieve a simple, reliable classification. It is concluded that many neuronal processes may be intraganglionic and that longitudinal ones are mainly aboral. From the varied morphological characteristics of AH-neurons, it is unlikely that these neurons subserve a single function in the plexus. For the same reasons S-neurons may fulfil different physiological roles.

Antigens in immunity. XV. Ultrastructural features of antigen capture in primary and secondary lymphoid follicles.

This paper describes the trapping of antigen in lymphoid follicles of rat popliteal lymph nodes as revealed by electron microscopic radioautographs following injection of (125)I-labeled Salmonella adelaide flagella and other materials. The antigen was taken up vigorously, and to an approximately equal extent, by both primary and secondary follicles. The rate of uptake was faster in preimmunized than in virgin adult rats. The bulk of the antigen in follicles was extracellular, and persisted in this location for at least 3 wk. Label was most frequently found at or near the surface of fine cell processes. Many of these were branches of dendritic follicular reticular cells. Such processes interdigitated with equally fine processes of lymphocytes, creating an elaborate meshwork. In some cases, antigen was found between lymphocytes which appeared to be in close apposition. Occasionally, a few grains appeared over lymphocyte nuclei and study of serial sections suggested that this probably represented true entry of small amounts of antigen into lymphocytes. The characteristic "tingible body" macrophages (TBM) of germinal centers appeared to play only a secondary role in follicular antigen retention. They showed degrees of labeling over their phagocytic inclusions varying from negligible to moderately heavy. Moreover, follicles lacking or poor in TBM retained antigen just as effectively as those containing numerous TBM. The hypothesis is advanced that TBM may be derived from monocytes that migrate down from the circular sinus. Follicular localization of three other materials was also studied, though not in such detail. These were (125)I-HSA complexed to anti-HSA: (125)I-labeled autologous IgG; and (125)I-monomeric flagellin. All of these showed the basic features of intercellular, membrane-associated deposition noted with (125)I-flagella. The role of follicular antigen depots in immune induction is discussed. The tentative conclusion is reached that follicular antigen in a primary follicle encounters natural antibody on the surface of certain antigen-reactive lymphocytes. The resultant reaction causes blast cell transformation and eventually the genesis of a germinal center.

Coherent effects in energy transport in model dendritic structures investigated by ultrafast fluorescence anisotropy spectroscopy.

Measurements of ultrafast fluorescence anisotropy decay in model branched dendritic molecules of different symmetry are reported. These molecules contain the fundamental branching center units of larger dendrimer macromolecules with either three (C(3))- or four (T(d), tetrahedral)-fold symmetry. The anisotropy for a tetrahedral system is found to decay on a subpicosecond time scale (880 fs). This decay can be qualitatively explained by Förster-type incoherent energy migration between chromophores. Alternatively, for a nitrogen-centered trimer system, the fluorescence anisotropy decay time (35 fs) is found to be much shorter than that of the tetramers, and the decay cannot be attributed to an incoherent hopping mechanism. In this case, a coherent interchromophore energy transport mechanism should be considered. The mechanism of the ultrafast energy migration process in the branched systems is interpreted by use of a phenomenological quantum mechanical model, which examines the two extreme cases of incoherent and coherent interactions.

Coordinated expression of Hoxb genes and signaling molecules during development of the chick respiratory tract.

To elucidate the molecular mechanism for regulating the region-specific morphogenesis of the chicken respiratory tract, we analyzed the spatiotemporal expression patterns of the Hoxb genes, Bmp-2, Bmp-4, Wnt-5a, and Wnt-11 in the developing respiratory tract. We found region-specific expression of these genes in the mesenchymal layer of the respiratory tract. Before bronchial branching proceeds, Hoxb genes show nested expression patterns around the ventral-distal tip of the lung bud. As morphogenesis proceeds, these expression domains correspond to the morphological subdivisions of the chick respiratory tract. Hoxb-5 and Hoxb-6 expression domains demarcate the trachea, bronchial tree, and air sacs. Particularly the expression domains of Hoxb-6 to -9 correspond to the morphological subdivisions of the air sacs along the proximodistal axis. Bmp-4 and Bmp-2 are expressed throughout the entire pulmonary mesenchyme and its dorsal half, respectively. Wnt-5a and Wnt-11 are expressed in the tracheal mesenchyme. Interestingly, the expression domain of Bmp-2 is complementary to the Hoxb-6 domain. The respiratory mesenchyme influences the process of epithelial branching during morphogenesis. By tissue recombination experiments, we found that the dorsal and the ventral pulmonary mesenchyme, demarcated by Hoxb-6 expression, have different inductive capacities toward the tracheal epithelium. These observations suggest the possibility that Hoxb genes are involved in the system specifying regional differences in morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation of respiratory tract. In addition, it is possible that BMPs and WNTs mediate region-specific epithelial-mesenchymal interaction in this system.

The distribution of synapses on a physiologically identified motor neuron in the central nervous system of the leech. An electron microscope study after the injection of the fluorescent dye procion yellow.

The fine structure of a physiologically identified motor neuron in the segmental ganglion of the leech central nervous system and the morphology of synapses on it were studied after injection of the fluorescent dye Procion yellow as a marker. The injected cell and its processes within the neuropil were located in thick or thin sections with fluorescence optics after initial fixation with glutaraldehyde and brief treatment with osmium tetroxide. The same or adjacent thin sections could then be examined in the electron microscope. Comparison with uninjected cells showed that the general features of the injected cell are retained although some organelles are distorted. The main features of the geometry of this neuron are the same from animal to animal: a single large process runs from the soma through the neuropil to bifurcate and enter the contralateral roots. Within the neuropil the main process gives off long branches (up to 150 micro), but these are greatly outnumbered by short branches and spines, one or a few microns in length, which were not appreciated in previous light microscope studies after injection of Procion yellow. Serial thin sections of selected areas along the main process within the neuropil showed that there are synapses on most of the shorter branches and spines; occasional synaptic contacts were also made on the main process itself and on longer branches. At least two morphologically distinct types of synapse could be recognized. A minimum estimate of the total number of synapses on the motor cell is 300, based on their occurrence in reconstructed segments.

Anatomic study of distally based pedicle compound flaps with nutrient vessels of the cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm.

The purpose of this study was to describe the anatomic basis for a distally based neurovenovascular pedicle compound flap, with nutrient vessels of the cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm. In this study, the origins, branches, and anastomoses of nutrient vessels of the cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm and their relationships with the blood supply of adjacent muscle, bone, and skin were assessed in 96 adult cadavers by perfusion of red gelatin into the superior limb arteries. The results showed that the nutrient vessels of cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm were found to have multiple origins, consisting of six longitudinal vascular plexuses and one transverse vascular plexus of the forearm, as follows: 1) the anterior-lateral vascular plexus from cutaneous branches of the radial artery; 2) the anterior-medialis vascular plexus from cutaneous branches of the ulnar artery; 3) the dorso-lateral vascular plexus from radial osteal and cutaneous branches; 4) the dorso-medialis vascular plexus from ulnar osteal and cutaneous branches; 5) the radial vascular plexus from osteal and cutaneous branches of the radial artery, cutaneous branches of the radial artery in the upper wrist, recurrent branches of the styloid process of the radius, and the radialis vascular plexus of cutaneous branches of the tabatière anatomique (anatomical snuffbox); and 6) the ulnar lateral vascular plexus from cutaneous branches of the ulnar artery in the upper wrist and osteal and cutaneous branches. The transverse vascular plexus is composed of dorsal branches of the ulnar and radial arteries. These perforating branches give fascial branches, cutaneous branches, periosteal branches, and nutrient vessels of cutaneous nerves and superficial veins. These results suggest that nutrient vessels of the cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm have the same origins as those of the nutrient vessels of adjacent muscles, bones, and skin of the forearm, which can be designated as five types of distally based pedicle flaps with nutrient vessels of cutaneous nerves and superficial veins of the forearm, whose rotation point is at the wrist joint. This flap can be applied to repair tissues of distal parts of the hand.

[The comparative anatomical characteristics of the arteries and the microcirculatory bed of the duodenum].

Morphological characteristics of comparative-anatomical formation of extra-organic and organic arteries and microcirculatory bed architectonics in duodenum of 312 certain representatives of all classes of vertebrates was given. It was shown that two groups of vessels qualitatively different in form and type of branching formed in the process of historical development: arteries with magistral-arcuate form of branching of non-anastomosing type and that with magistral-annular form of branching. The appearance of arterio-venular anastomosis type junctions in latter ones between one side of the intestine and veins of the opposite side provides the phenomenon of bilateral non-capillary countercurrent organic circulation. Microcirculatory bed of part of the villi completely lacked capillaries, while arterioles were connected with venules expertionally by arterio-venular anastomoses.

In vitro formation of type 2 astrocytes derived from postnatal rat hypothalamus or cerebral cortex.

The origin and function of type 2 astrocytes in the optic nerve are now well described, but there are few and controversial observations concerning their origin and functional significance in other regions of the mammalian brain. We here describe primary and highly enriched secondary glial cultures obtained from postnatal (P0-P6) rat hypothalami and cerebral cortices that included glial cells with morphological and immunocytochemical characteristics of type 2 astrocytes. The somata of such astrocytes were characteristically small and polygonal; they bore several processes with few branches. They were highly immunoreactive for glial fibrillary acidic protein and the surface antigens, A2B5 and NSP4; they were immunonegative for myelin basic protein and galactocerebroside. They grew on top of a continuous monolayer of much larger, flattened cells, that were glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive but A2B5- and NSP4-negative. In cultures derived from tissues younger than postnatal day 4, their appearance required the addition of adult (horse) serum to the culture milieu; they appeared spontaneously in cultures from older animals. Analysis of the origin of these cells, including experiments using tritiated thymidine incorporation, indicated that these astrocytes resulted from asymmetric divisions of the flat glial cells in the basal layer of the cultures. After their first appearance which varied according to the age of the source tissue, they were continuously generated, with a generation time no longer than 48 h; the life-span of individual cells was found to not exceed one week in neuron-free primary glial cultures. They displayed important process motility but did not show any significant migratory activity. The ready inducibility of glial cells showing many characteristics of type 2 astrocytes, in cultures derived from different brain areas, suggests that type 2-like astrocytes or their committed precursors are not restricted to particular neural structures, but are probably widely distributed within the mammalian brain. Their functional significance within the different brain areas remains to be determined.

A novel role for snapin in dendrite patterning: interaction with cypin.

Temporal and spatial assembly of signal transduction machinery determines dendrite branch patterning, a process crucial for proper synaptic transmission. Our laboratory previously cloned and characterized cypin, a protein that decreases PSD-95 family member localization and regulates dendrite number. Cypin contains zinc binding, collapsin response mediator protein (CRMP) homology, and PSD-95, Discs large, zona occludens-1 binding domains. Both the zinc binding and CRMP homology domains are needed for dendrite patterning. In addition, cypin binds tubulin via its CRMP homology domain to promote microtubule assembly. Using a yeast two-hybrid screen of a rat brain cDNA library with cypin lacking the carboxyl terminal eight amino acids as bait, we identified snapin as a cypin binding partner. Here, we show by affinity chromatography and coimmunoprecipitation that the carboxyl-terminal coiled-coil domain (H2) of snapin is required for cypin binding. In addition, snapin binds to cypin's CRMP homology domain, which is where tubulin binds. We also show that snapin competes with tubulin for binding to cypin, resulting in decreased microtubule assembly. Subsequently, overexpression of snapin in primary cultures of hippocampal neurons results in decreased primary dendrites present on these neurons and increased probability of branching. Together, our data suggest that snapin regulates dendrite number in developing neurons by modulating cypin-promoted microtubule assembly.

Molecular mechanism of HUWE1-HAPSTR1-USP7-mediated ubiquitin chain amplification on nuclear proteins.

Rapid protein turnover is essential for cellular stress adaptation. HUWE1 (HECT, UBA, and WWE domain containing 1), a large HECT-type E3 ligase, regulates many short-lived stress-responsive proteins, yet the mechanisms underlying its substrate selectivity remain unclear. Here, we reveal that HUWE1 functions as a ubiquitin chain amplifier that captures pre-ubiquitinated substrates and amplifies the degradation signal by assembling long ubiquitin chains containing K11-K48 branch points, a process regulated by its partners HUWE1-associated protein stress response 1 (HAPSTR1) and USP7 (ubiquitin-specific-processing protease 7). Structural and biochemical analyses show that HAPSTR1 engages HUWE1's ubiquitin-binding motifs to drive nuclear import and modulate substrate recruitment. A cryo-EM structure of the HUWE1-USP7 complex reveals a bidirectional regulatory mechanism: HUWE1 activates USP7's catalytic activity, while USP7 modulates HUWE1 conformational states. Global proteomic analyses demonstrate that this axis drives extensive remodeling of the short-lived nuclear proteome. These findings establish the HUWE1-HAPSTR1-USP7 complex as a key ubiquitin code modifier, providing a molecular rationale for HUWE1 dysregulation in neurodevelopmental disorders and cancer.

Kinetics of cerebral uptake processes in vitro of L-glutamine, branched-chain L-amino acids, and L-phenylalanine: effects of ouabain.

Estimates have been made of the amounts and rates of uptake of radioactive branched-chain L-amino acids, L-phenylalanine, and L-glutamine into incubated rat brain cortex slices. Estimates have also been made of the binding of these amino acids to brain cell fragments. It is shown that such binding, as well as the process of passive diffusion, is not affected by the presence of ouabain (0.2 mM), which suppresses the energy-dependent concentrative uptakes of the amino acids investigated. The maximum specific binding of L-glutamine is about three times that of the other amino acids and amounts to about 11% of the total uptake of the amino acid by rat brain cortex slices in 12 min from a medium containing 0.25 mM-glutamine. The sodium-ion concentration of the medium appears not to play a significant role in determining the rate of L-glutamine uptake in brain slices except at relatively low concentrations (< 20 mequiv./1). The presence of Na+, however, is essential for the attainment of a tissue-to-medium concentration ratio greater than 2.0 for L-glutamine. At relatively low concentrations (0.25 mM) the rapidity of uptake of L-glutamine into a suspension of nerve terminals exceeds that into brain cortex slices. The uptakes of L-glutamine (Km's = 0.66 mM and 2.25 mM) and of the branched chain L-amino acids (Km's approx. 0.3 mM and 2 mM) by rat brain cortex slices are characterized by a double affinity system, but that of L-phenylalanine has only one affinity system (Km = 0.23 mM). The Km's have been calculated after subtracting the ouabain-insensitive passive uptakes of the amino acids from the total observed uptakes.

Differential effects of TrkC isoforms on sensory axon outgrowth.

Neurotrophins are powerful regulators of neuronal morphology. Several lines of evidence are consistent with the idea that characteristic axonal and dendritic morphologies throughout the nervous system may be determined by local patterns of neurotrophin and neurotrophin receptor expression. Neurotrophin receptor tryosine kinases (Trks) exist in both tyrosine-containing (TK+) and tyrosine-lacking (TK-) isoforms, both of which are expressed in many neuronal populations. However, ratios of TK+ to TK- isoforms may vary at different stages of development and may be differentially distributed to cellular compartments. To test whether these isoforms have different functions related to axon outgrowth, full-length or tyrosine kinase-lacking TrkC receptors were overexpressed in embryonic dorsal root ganglion neurons maintained in explant cultures in neurotrophin-3 (NT-3)-containing media. Neurons were transfected with plasmid DNA encoding enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP) and TrkC receptor isoforms by particle-mediated gene transfer. Control neurons possessed 3.7 +/- 1.3 primary processes and 113.8 +/- 46 branch points. About 80% of the branches were located along the distal part of the axon. Transfection with the trkC TK+ increased the number of primary processes (6.5 +/- 2.8), whereas transfection with trkC TK- reduced the formation of primary processes (3.0 +/- 1.3). Surprisingly, the distribution of branch points was shifted to the proximal region of axons in neurons transfected with trkC TK-. These observations are consistent with the idea that differential expression of Trk isoforms during development may sculpt axonal morphology.
