Factors affecting the development of new towns in Israel.

"The purpose of this paper is to study and to explain the differences in success among the new Israeli towns as measured by their ability to attract migrants, with the hope of contributing to the evaluation of policies suggested for their revitalization.... Empirical evidence is presented which supports the hypothesis that the social composition of the population in each town has become the major determinant of the ability of these towns to attract additonal migrants."

Sustainability of population growth: a case study of urban settlements in Israel.

"One of the most sensitive criteria for gauging the degree of socio-economic prosperity of an urban settlement is the ability to sustain stable rates of population growth by attracting newcomers and retaining existing population. The present paper argues that after reaching a particular size (on the average, 20-30,000 residents), urban localities in Israel tend to experience substantial changes in components of their annual population growth. Starting with this inflection point, the growth of settlements gradually becomes less dependent on natural causes (birth and death rates) than on the ability to attract newcomers and retain current residents. On the basis of this conclusion, a strategy of ¿redirecting priorities' to developing the peripheral regions of the country is suggested."

Segregation levels in the late-apartheid city 1985-1991.

"In the course of the 1980s a number of changes took place in the organization of South African cities, leading to the concept of 'modernizing' apartheid. Relaxation of laws and the publicized responses to racial integration in a few localities encouraged the concept of a breakdown of residential barriers. However, an examination of the 1991 census suggests not only that segregation levels are remarkably high, but also that they rose in the period between 1985 and 1991. The White population in particular remains highly segregated from the remainder. There is nevertheless a number of significant regional differences, indicating that urban restructuring was not uniform. The late-apartheid city thus appears little changed from its predecessor."

Growth of small and intermediate cities in Korea, 1975-1980.

"This paper examines the urban growth of 33 small and intermediate Korean cities during 1975-1980 from the ecological perspective. Using the multiple regression analysis, population growth of a city is measured by variables such as industrial structure, distance from a metropolitan city, and educational level of residents in a corresponding city. At the present development stage in Korea, those cities whose industrial structure is more specialized in the transformative sector rather than other sectors have grown more rapidly. The closeness to a metropolitan city and the educational level of residents for each city strongly influence urban growth of small cities."

[Regional differences and problems of population development in Croatia, 1948-1991].

The authors analyze changes in population size and density in Croatia from 1948 to 1991. "Since the end of World War II the population growth rate has been in a permanent decline in Croatia due to occasional intense emigration, but also due to decrease in the number of newborn and increased number of deaths (ageing of the population in spite of higher living standards). This has been happening all over Croatia, which displays great differences in population density.... Polarization is significant also in migration of the population in urban and rural settlement...." Urban growth in India and its contemporary relevance.

"The paper deals with...urban growth in India in general with relevance to urban agglomerations of major significance on the basis of [the] Census of 1991. In addition the urban growth during 1981-91 is viewed in accordance with the projected population and the actual count as undertaken in the 1991 Census operations. Some of the questions arising out of the contemporary trends in these areas...may be of concern for academic and planning processes. More elaborate synthesis is obviously required when the detailed tables on socio-economic parameters are given by the Census in due course to cross-classify and examine more aspects of population at various levels."
