[Characteristics of the meat of cattle with cysticercosis due to experimental infection with the eggs of the tapeworm Taenia saginata and treated with praziquantel].

Eleven test and control bullocks of the Bohemian Spotted breed were studied for the effect of cysticercosis and their treatment with praziquantel on the properties of meat and fat. As found, the disease affected the composition of meat and fat and some of the studied characteristics and technological properties of meat. Although the measles disappeared after treatment, they were not resorbed. Therefore, irrespective of the worsened meat quality, the meat and organs of such animals cannot be evaluated in any other way but according to the valid veterinary regulations.

[Test of the vitality and infectiousness of the beef tapeworm (Cysticercus bovis)].

The vitality and infectiosity of Cysticercus bovis can be determined by means of a relatively simple in vitro method. Mobility and evagination are 2 parameters for estimating vitality as well as infectiosity. The mobility-evagination-relationship (MER) is an excellent basis for investigating the mobility over 20 h, because 2 parameters are involved. Of special interest was the fact that the first part of MER (after 1 h) is the period for the short-time-test (control of vitality), and the second part of MER (after 18 to 20 h) is the period for the long-time-test (control of infectiosity). Mobility and evagination of metacestodes were tested in activator solution (100 ml physiological saline + 6 ml fresh swine bile) at a temperature of 38 degrees C and a pH of 7.0. This in vitro method may be useful in determining the vitality of fresh and older Cysticercus bovis and of those exposed to smoking.

[In vitro and in vivo effects of paromomycin sulfate on tapeworm, especially Diphyllobothrium ditremum, and clinical effects on diphyllobothriasis in man].

Plerocercoids of D. ditremum were obtained from the Japanese surfsmelt (Hypomesus pretiosus) and administered to Golden hamsters. The animals were treated with paromomycin sulfate on the 16th day of infection. Anthelmintic effect was imperfection after administration of 530 mg/kg in 4 divided doses. Kamala and bithionol, however, successfully expelled the worm at the doses of 80 and 160 mg/kg and 12.5--70 mg/kg, respectively. The balloon-like structures and the other morphological changes of the tegument such as exfoliation of microtriches were remarkably observed on the worms immersed in 2% solution of paromomycin sulfate. Four human cases of diphyllobothriasis were treated with paromomycin sulfate at the doses of 46--56 mg/kg. No side effects were observed. Stool examination made 1 month after treatment were negative to the eggs. From these results, an anthelmintic effect of paromomycin sulfate was shown in the concentration of 2% on D. ditremum in vitro and in the dosage of 46--56 mg/kg in diphyllobothriasis lata patients.
