The Warnock Report and single women: what about the children?

The Warnock Committee decided not to sanction artificial insemination by donor (AID) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for single heterosexual women or for lesbian women on the grounds that it is better for children to be born into a two-parent heterosexual family. From an examination of the effects on children of growing up in fatherless heterosexual and lesbian families, this paper questions that assumption.

Sexual attitudes and behavior of Guatemalan teenagers: considerations for prevention of adolescent pregnancy.

Two studies were conducted to explore the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy in Guatemala, and to identify the level of contraception. The first study assessed sexual attitudes and behavior of 850 adolescents. In this group, 89% of the males and 38% of the females said they had experienced coitus. Youngsters of upper-middle and lower-middle socioeconomic status had higher rates of coital activity than did those of the middle class. Only 10% of the sexually active couples were using some type of contraception. Boys indicated greater inclination toward "recreational" sex, while girls tended to be more affectively involved with their lovers. Ninety-six percent of sexually active girls planned to marry their current sexual partner, while 5.5% of the boys planned to do so. The second study assessed the prevalence of pregnancy in minors (17 years or younger) attending the gynecology department at a local general hospital. Over a period of two years, 551 cases were identified. Although rates of pregnancy increased with age, the rate of annual increase was dramatically highest from ages 13 to 14, after which it decreased progressively with age. Based on these results, it is recommended that, at least in the Guatemalan population, sex education be implemented at an early age in order to prevent adolescent pregnancy.

Object loss, aggression, and gender identity.

This paper arises from a clinical, observational, longitudinal study of aggression in normal children in the first two years of life. In this study of one of the research children the authors seek to delinate how the emergence and vicissitudes of aggression in a little boy are affected by a variety of strains in the course of his early development and how the aggression affects all the major developmental tasks in his young life. In particular, the authors attempt to follow the interdependent currents of object relations, aggression, and early sexual development.

Theoretical and clinical shifts in psychoanalysis.

Shifts in psychoanalytic theory and in conceptions of psychoanalytic practice over the past 15 years are examined, with particular attention to the advent and expansion of Kohutian self-psychology within the psychoanalytic movement. It is concluded that the nature of psychoanalysis is sufficiently heterogeneous that any attempt to encompass or define the field as a whole--rather than to analyze particular formulations and developments within the field--is doomed to failure.

The complexity of sexuality.

Recent genetic and environmental theories of the etiology of homosexuality are evaluated. Interactive theory is proposed as a better alternative for understanding the development of sexual identity and sexual preference.

[A body of one's own. Sexual development and physical female development in the mother-child relationship].

Prevalent psychoanalytic opinion has it that (sexually) femaleness is marked by a severe deficiency. Accordingly it is widely held that the acknowledgement of female sexuality is primarily a matter for fathers rather than mothers. The author takes a different stance, insisting on the opportunities inherent in the mother-daughter relationship to the extent that it both permits and encourages pleasurable self-examination and acceptance of the body on the part of the growing girl. In the therapeutic connection, the author calls for a form of remedial socialisation to fill the specific lacunae that have developed around female sexuality.

The development of adolescent sexual intimacy: implications for counseling.

This paper proposes a perspective for understanding the development of adolescent sexual intimacy. A "transitional stage" is described in which adolescents, driven by a variety of developmental needs influenced by external forces such as peers and family, experiment with sexual behaviors. The completion of the transitional stage results in the adolescent's ability to achieve "relational" sexual intimacy, which is also described. The problems and implications for counseling associated with the biophysiological and family dynamic influences on the development of adolescent sexual intimacy are discussed.

Adolescent sexuality: values, morality and decision making.

The first section of this paper presents a theoretical basis of morality and value formation which provides the background for an examination of adolescent sexual and cognitive development. Data from a study of influences on the sexual decisions of five hundred 13- to 19-year-olds are analyzed in the remainder of the article. Relationships between individual characteristics and the importance of various influences are interpreted in light of the structure of values and moral development.
