Measles-virus-specific IgG in optic neuritis and in multiple sclerosis after optic neuritis.

Measles-virus-specific IgG was measured in the serum of 100 patients who had presented with optic neuritis (ON) during 1960-74. When reviewed 41 of them were found to have developed definite symptoms and signs of multiple sclerosis (MS), their serum containing significantly higher titres of the antibody than sera from either the rest of the patients or a group of normal healthy controls. In a few patients from whom cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was obtained in the acute phase of ON, titres of measles IgG in the serum was higher in those in whom the antibody was detected in the CSF than the serum of patients without CSF antibody.

The accessory optic system in the newt, Triturus cristatus: unitary response properties from the basal optic neuropil.

Recordings from the basal optic neuropil (BON) demonstrated directional sensitivity. These directional sensitivities were different in different units, however, most of them displayed a strong vertical component. Inhibition in the non-preferred direction did not occur, only a lower activation than in the preferred direction was found. The identified velocity functions correlate well with the velocity dependence of the nystagmus frequency demonstrated in the behavior. The units responded well to moving large-area stimuli and exhibited horizontally elongated receptive fields with diameters up to 120 degrees. Additionally, bimodal recordings were observed in the BON which were probably due to input from the otoliths. As the recordings are likely to be presynaptic, the BON receives types of input which establish its function in the control of visuomotor behavior.

Interaction between HLA-DR2 and abnormal brain MRI in optic neuritis and early MS. Optic Neuritis Study Group.

The association of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR2 allele with brain MRI signal abnormalities and with the development of MS was assessed in 178 patients enrolled in the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial. HLA haplotype DR2 was present in 85 (48%) of the 178 patients. Its presence was associated with increased odds of probable or definite MS at 5 years (odds ratio, 1.92; 95% confidence interval, 1.01 to 3.67; p = 0.04). The association was most apparent among patients with signal abnormalities on baseline brain MRI.

Method for optical resolution of racemic homochlorcyclizine and comparison of optical isomers in antihistamine activity and pharmacokinetics.

A method was developed for semi-preparative scale enantioseparation of racemic homochlorcyclizine (HCZ) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on Chiralcel OD column. The best resolution was achieved using an eluent composed of n-hexane plus 0.2 M isopropylamine. By this method, about 5.0 mg of racemic HCZ could be resolved completely in one run. The optical purity of the enantiomers were both greater than 99.9%. The studies of antihistamine activity on guinea pig ileum demonstrated that l-HCZ is significantly more potent than d- and racemic HCZ. The pharmacokinetics of d- and l-HCZ after oral administration to rats also differed. The successful resolution of racemic HCZ permits comparison of the pharmacokinetics and antihistamine activity of the enantiomers.

[Leber's hereditary optic atrophy: neurological and other non-optic appearances].

Comparing to other mitochondrial diseases, multisystemic lesions in Leber's hereditary optic atrophy (LHOA) occur less frequently. However, in some cases there are concomitant manifestations, especially neurological ones. Out of thirteen patients examined in the study, 5 exhibited MRI-detected neurological symptoms and changes, which may have concern to the underlying disease, namely LHOA caused by 11778A mutation. Literature and author's own data on neurological spectrum of LHOA and its possible relation to multiple sclerosis are summarized. A rare combination of LHOA caused by 14484C mutation and diabetes mellitus, described first-ever in the present study, is emphasized.
