[Microcomputer and rehabilitation of cognitive cerebral performance disorders].

Clinical neuropsychology has so far mostly been concerned with theoretical aspects of the brain-behavior relationship, as well as the diagnosis of cognitive deficits after brain damage. Only very recently has cognitive rehabilitation of the brain injured patient become a major area of interest in neuropsychology, and computer-assisted therapy of higher cortical functions is playing an increasing role especially in the United States. A survey found that 73% of the rehabilitation centers included were using computers in delivering their cognitive rehabilitation therapy, major areas of computer-assisted therapy being deficits of eye-hand coordination, attention, concentration, orientation, visual-spatial processing, memory, discrimination, problem solving, and concept formation. Treatment of speech disorders using computers is so far limited but will improve when more efficient language analyzers and synthesizers become available. More powerful microcomputers will lead to both computer-assisted and computer-managed cognitive programs, which allow for maximum flexibility and individualization of treatment. Computer use in cognitive rehabilitation should be subject to supervision by a therapist, and the following requirements should be met: 1) detailed diagnostic analysis of the differential cognitive performance pattern of a patient; 2) individual adaptation of computer peripherals to achieve optimum patient-computer-interaction; 3) selection and adaptation of therapy software to match the individual cognitive performance profile of a patient. Cognitive computer therapy appears to be most profitable in the rehabilitation phase and in post-rehabilitation treatment.

Microcomputer software and interface for control of a microscope scanning stage.

Motorized scanning stages are valuable in microscopy systems that employ digital image analysis and for the development of semiautomatic computer-assisted microscope systems; the development of standard software "tools" to control such stages will facilitate their integration into a variety of computer-based systems. A set of Microsoft BASIC and Turbo PASCAL programs that interfaces a microprocessor-controlled stepper motor microscope stage (MDACE 1000) to an IBM PC or PC-AT or compatible microcomputer via a serial interface (RS-232) is described. These programs can be integrated into other software written in either BASIC or PASCAL, or used via a menu program that directs the routines to control scanning patterns and to locate the microscope stage to a selected area of the slide. Coordinates of significant events on a slide can be stored on a disk file to allow future examination. The software and interface also provide control of a filter wheel in the microscope for use in multicolor fluorescence assays.

Use of the microcomputer to determine direct costs of menu items.

Recent developments brought about by the government's prospective payment system as well as by new restrictions on hospitalization imposed by private insurance companies are placing greater emphasis on cost-containment measures within hospital foodservice systems. The research reported in this article focuses upon the development of a microcomputer technique that produces direct (labor and ingredient) cost information on menu items. Such information can assist foodservice directors in identifying and controlling costs associated with their current menu offerings. In addition, this information can assist in planning and decision making for future menu planning efforts as well as in make-or-buy decisions.

Microcomputer-based digital image analysis system for quantitative autoradiography.

A computerized image processing system utilizing an IBM-XT personal microcomputer with the capability of performing quantitative cerebral autoradiography is described. All of the system components are standard computer and optical hardware that can be easily assembled. The system has 512 horizontal by 512 vertical axis resolution with 8 bits per pixel (256 gray levels). Unlike other dedicated image processing systems, the IBM-XT permits the assembly of an efficient, low-cost image analysis system without sacrificing other capabilities of the IBM personal computer. The application of this system in both qualitative and quantitative autoradiography has been the principal factor in developing a new radiopharmaceutical to measure regional cerebral blood flow.

A microcomputer-assisted exercise prescription for use by family physicians.

Family physicians frequently advise their patients on choosing and implementing regular programs of exercise. This report describes techniques of submaximal aerobic fitness assessment and microcomputer-assisted exercise prescription suitable for use in office-based practice. A submaximal bench step test is used for the estimation of aerobic fitness. A BASIC program operating on a Macintosh provides calculations of fitness levels and produces an individualized exercise prescription. While obviously not suitable for every patient, this approach is practical for young to middle-aged low-risk individuals interested in beginning regular training programs.

[Assessment of weight and height using a microcomputer].

By a simple microcomputer program, children's pondostatural growth rate status can be assessed, after having introduced the birth date, sex, and current weigh an height. Starting from these data, the computer displays the existing deviations (expressed as a percent) between the current an mean height for the age, and between the current and relative weight, ie, the mean weight which corresponds to the current height. This program can show, through only two values, the present growth rate status in a quick and accurate way, easy to grasp by the child and his/her family; it also permits a clear comparison to be established among ongoing measurements. The ideal growth chart, build from this values, becomes oversimplified into an horizontal line, drawn at the point level of the 0% deviation. Any existing growth trend is expressed by the upward of downward deviation, relative to the aforementioned horizontal line.

[NKCELPRO: a program for microcomputer applicable to the study of responses of spontaneous cytotoxicity].

A microcomputer program (NKCELPRO) which expedites the exact quantification of various parameters referring to NK cell activities is described. The program is written in BASIC language and computes the activities of cell-mediated cytotoxicity by collating and reducing radioactive count data obtained from 51Cr releasing assays. The information generated by this program includes statistics such as the average values, fitting by last square regression line with its correlation coefficient, as well as determination of the percent specific lysis and lytic units/10(7) effector cells according to any reference value previously defined by the operator. Special program features allow for a certain flexibility in the experimental protocol design as well as in the graphic expression of the results. Data storage on a disk with filing purposes for subsequent studies is also available.

Psychomotor performance tests using a microcomputer: evaluation of effects of caffeine and chlorpheniramine in healthy human subjects.

We have developed two kinds of microcomputer programs for evaluation of psychomotor function in man. In one (simple test), two single-digit random numbers are displayed, and the subject inputs the last figure of their sum from the keyboard. The performance during two sequential trial periods of 5 min with a rest interval of 1 min is evaluated. In the other (complicated test), four single-digit random numbers are displayed and the test is performed in the same manner. With the latter we intended to decrease the efficacy of performance by about 50% as compared with the former. A validation study of these programs was conducted in 20 healthy volunteers (14 males and 6 females) with caffeine as a central nervous stimulant. The study was a double-blind, placebo controlled and cross-over one. The subjects performed both of the above tests prior to and 1 h after an oral administration of a capsule containing either placebo or caffeine (230 mg) at an interval of 24 h. The numbers of correct answers during 10 min of trial were used for the evaluation of performance. The relationship between the performance of the simple test and that of the complicated test was linear and, as expected, the efficacy of the latter was about a half (48%) of the former in the total 40 performances of control. The concentration of caffeine in plasma was measured with and HPLC technique to be 4.4 +/- 1.7 micrograms/ml (mean +/- SD) 40 min after administration. Caffeine significantly (P less than 0.05) increased the performances of both tests 1 h after the administration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Human melanocytic naevi. II. Depth of dermal protrusion: comparative measurements of the basement membrane zone and diameters of intracellular microfibrils using a microcomputer analysis system.

Thirteen acquired melanocytic naevi and five control skin biopsies were taken and fixed for observation both in the light and electron microscope. The thickness of the basement membrane, the distance of the naevus protrusion into the dermis, the number of anchoring fibrils attached to the lamina densa and the diameter of intracellular filaments in the naevus cells were measured. Comparative measurements were made in the electron microscope, from micrograph negatives and from micrographs. A non dedicated microcomputer digital analysis system developed specifically from this type of analysis, was also used.

An interactive microcomputer-based system for the quantitative analysis of stratified tissue sections.

This paper describes a microcomputer-based system that allows diagnostically relevant properties of stratified tissue sections to be objectively measured. The results of detailed nuclear image analyses are examined in the broader context of the position of nuclei within the tissue section and relative to histologic structures and each other. Quantitative measures are obtained for important morphometric and densitometric properties of individual nuclei and mitotic figures and especially for their distribution and orientation within the tissue section relative to the stratum germinativum and each other. Recorded karyometric and histometric parameters include measures of nuclear DNA content (based on optical density measurements), size, roundness, texture, shape, distance to the basal layer, angle with the stratum germinativum, epithelial height and proximate nuclear distance. Statistics generated describe normalized mitotic density as a function of depth in the epithelium, and a composite mitotic index is produced based upon weighting of these densities relative to their distance from the stratum germinativum. These properties and derived statistics may be examined as a function of epithelial depth and nuclear type and may be plotted as a function of other diagnostic features in addition to the observed stratum. The system is one part of microTICAS-STRATEX, an expert diagnostic system for the clinical evaluation of stratified tissue sections, now under development as an outgrowth of the microTICAS system. Results of measurements made with this system will be compared with site-specific and diagnosis-specific reference profiles and used in conjunction with clinical data derived from a data base at the University of Chicago of over 1.5 million patients to generate diagnostic and prognostic evaluations.

[Methodology of a planned clinical dietetic experiment with a program for processing the results on the Elektronika BZ-34 microcomputer].

Methods of planned clinical experiments on dietotherapy, adapted for the study of food additives in the absence of an adequate placebo, were improved due to the modification of the mathematical analysis. The schedule of the experiment involves exclusion of nonuniformity, reduction of the number of necessary studies and high accuracy of the final results. For the statistical analysis of the data obtained in the experiment a program has been proposed for the microcomputer.

A statistical model to optimize indirect sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay parameters of antigen and antibody: a microcomputer program.

A new computer software program "AVCRV" was developed using a statistical model to analyze the data from the indirect sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The software program calculates a sigmoid type of regression analysis and can be run on most microcomputers in the laboratory. The program permits those who are not familiar with computers to complete this type of analysis in a few seconds without a large mainframe computer or complicated software. This statistical model for a sigmoid type of regression analysis of ELISA data may improve the analysis of research data for various avian pathogens from several different experiments.
