[The role of individual segments of the gastrointestinal tract in the elimination of cesium radioisotopes].

The transfer of radiocesium from blood to the lumen of individual sections of the gastro-intestinal tract was quantitatively determined. The water suspension of ion exchange resin was injected to the lumen of the individual sections of the gastro-intestinal tract. The sections were ligated. The highest amount of radiocesium absorbed to the resin in the lumen of gastro-intestinal tract was observed 3 hrs after intravenous administration 137CsCl and reached 17.7% of the administered dose. It was shown that the small intestine and the ileum play the biggest role in absorption and excretion of the radiocesium. The role of the duodenum, the large intestine and the stomach is much smaller in this process.

[Photometric analysis of sodium and cesium iodides in the air of the work area].

The contributors propose a photometric technique for detecting sodium and caesium iodides in the working zone air. The technique is based on the oxidation of I-ions with bromine water, interacting of the educed iodine and redundant potassium iodide with concomitant formation of complex I3- ions, followed by 350-365 mm photometric measurements of the product. Air sample taking is performed by condensating on AFA--VP filtres. The lower limit of I-ions content measurements is 5 micrograms. The measurement range for sodium and caesium iodides is 0.2-50 mg/m3. Data is provided for the reproduction of the technique which can be used both in special laboratory and industrial conditions.

[The character of the distribution of chloroplast DNA from higher plants in a cesium chloride density gradient].

The nature of distribution of the chloroplast DNA from three species of higher plants (Sp. oleracea, N. tabacum, P. sativum) in the CsCl density gradient has been investigated DNA preparations isolated from the fractions of chloroplasts completely deprived of the admixtures of nuclei and mitochondria are characterized by symmetric distribution in the density gradient. Fragmentation of chloroplast DNA of higher plants is not accompanied by the appearance of the discrete satellite components. It has been shown that the satellite DNA component found in the fraction of the unpurified chloroplasts are entirely mitochondrial DNA.

Lack of specificity for detection of breast lesions with radioactive cesium chloride.

Detection of breast disease at an early stage was evaluated with 131CsCl. The tissue distribution study showed that malignant tumors could be distinguished from both benign and normal tissue by the degree of 131Cs concentration. However, the external counting method was not sensitive enough to warrant general application to patients with a suspected malignant tumor of the breast. False-positive breast study findings using radionuclides, such as 131CsCl, require close follow-up study in view of possible malignant changes in benign disease of the breast.

The use of radioactive cesium chloride for imaging of malignant and benign pulmonary lesions.

129CsCl was investigated as an agent for imaging tumors of the lung, and based on the results of 56 patients studied, it has proved to be highly sensitive in detecting primary malignant tumors of the lung. The differentiation between pulmonary malignant lesions and tuberculosis appears to be feasible. However, false-positive images in patients with benign conditions are inevitable.

[Decrease in internal irradiation dose from cesium radionuclides by using ferrocin (Prussian blue)].

The Chernobyl accident gave rise to a problem of development and testing of a method to control the alimentary intake of radioactive Cs and to reduce an internal irradiation dose by adding ferrocin in some food components. Some clinico-experimental investigations have shown that the use of ferrocin-containing foodstuffs in populated areas of strict radiation control will permit a considerable reduction of the body level of radioactive Cs, thus decreasing an internal irradiation dose and will return the population of these areas to their normal way of life.

Purification of avian encephalomyelitis virus by ultracentrifugation in a nonlinear cesium chloride gradient.

A rapid and convenient method is described for purifying avian encephalomyelitis virus. Infected embryo homogenate was treated with polyethylene glycol followed by extraction with fluorocarbon. Extracted sample was pelleted at 73,400 x g, resuspended, and subjected to isodensity centrifugation in preformed nonlinear gradient. A distinctive virus band was observed after centrifugation for 120 min at 192,000 x g. The fraction containing the virus band demonstrated the major portion of infectivity and the presence of the virus particles by electron microscopy. The method was reproducible within a limited number of trials.

[The dynamics of the content of incorporated cesium radionuclides in the population of regions with an elevated background radiation].

The authors represent summarized data on the time course of incorporated Cs in the population of the Krasnogorsk District of Bryansk Province over the period of June 1986-July 1989. A RIKh-5M device used as a counter of human radiations, its technical data and calibration methods were described. A retrospective analysis has shown that the main accumulation of radionuclides occurred before May 15 1986. The highest rates of Cs clearance from the body were noted in the period of August 1986 till February 1987, the average resultant periods of semiclearance for different populated areas and groups of population were 55-85 days. The ratio of accumulated Cs in children and adults was 0.3, in men and women--1.4. The effectiveness of measures aimed at reducing collective doses of internal irradiation was analyzed.

[The generation of nonadrenergic inhibiting synaptic potentials in the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract by substituting cesium ions for potassium ions].

Nonadrenergic inhibitory junction potentials (IJPs) evoked by intramural stimulation were investigated in smooth muscle of guinea pig stomach, caecum and colon by means of sucrose-gap method. IJPs disappeared in the smooth muscle preexposed to K-free Krebs solution for 4-9 h and restored by addition 6mM Cs+. The amplitude of IJPs was half as much as one in normal conditions but the latency and duration were significantly prolonged. In most cases apamin blocks IJPs in these muscles. The results presented suggest that IJPs generation is due to Cs+ ions permeated through Ca(2+)-activated apamin-sensitive potassium channels of small conductance in these conditions. As the responses to ATP were affected in parallel with IJPs, these results are consistent with the purinergic hypothesis.
