[The reaction of somatic lymph nodes to experimental exposure to sulfide baths].

Influence of strong sulfide baths of the sanatorium "Talgi" to the popliteal and superficial inguinal lymph nodes (LN) has been studied in 35 rats (140-150 g of body mass) and 15 animals have been used as the control. The slices are stained with hematoxyli-eosin, after van Gieson, Romanovsky-Giemsa, Kurnik and silver nitrate impregnation after Foot. The section area of the LN decreases, but amount of lymphoid nodules increases (especially in deep layers of the cortex). In the germinative centers amount of middle lymphocytes and mitoses becomes larger. In the internodular zones of the popliteal nodes amount of macrophages and eosinophiles enlarges significantly, and in the inguinal-amount of mast cells and eosinophiles. In the medullary sinuses amount of macrophages declines. In the medullary cords amount of immature plasma cells and blasts increases, while amount of mature cells decreases.

[Effect of medicated bath plus acupoint massage on limbs in treating 42 patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of medicated bath plus acupoint massage on limbs (B-M treatment) in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: Eighty-two patients were divided into two groups, the control group (n=40) and the treated group (n=42), they were treated by conventional treatment but with B-M treatment applied to the latter additionally, the course to both groups was 12 weeks. The curative effects obtained were compared after treatment. RESULTS: The total effective rate was higher in the treated group than that in the control group (81.0% vs. 52.5%, P < 0.05); the nerval transmission speed was improved significantly (P < 0.05) after treatment in both group, but that in the treated group was better than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: B-M treatment on limbs has better effect than Western medicine along in promoting DPN restoration.

[The use of air-radon baths for rehabilitating the immune system of patients with bronchial asthma].

A clinicoimmunological trial of air radon baths has been performed in patients suffering from bronchial asthma. A total of 157 asthmatics inhaled air radon mixture. The treatment proved effective with correlation of the response to immune status recovery. This allows one to refer this radon therapy to pathogenetic methods of bronchial asthma management. The highest efficacy was recorded in atopic asthma.

[Cardiovascular effects of sodium chloride bath and underwater shower in coronary ischemia].

Two hundred and eighteen patients (209 males and 9 females, mean age 57.1 +/- 0.6 years) with I class coronary ischemia were subdivided into two groups of 109 subjects each. Group I received NaCl baths, group II underwater massage-showers. On days 2-3 and 23-24 of treatment all underwent incremental stress testing until exhaustion. In group I, only subjects with moderate maximal muscular power improved their stress endurance. In group II, stress endurance significantly improved in all subjects: all hemodynamic indices (cardiac, output, stroke volume, systemic vascular resistances) showed variations indicative of improved cardiorespiratory function and peripheral blood supply.

[The clinico-immunological validation of the combined use of specific immunotherapy and radon baths in pollinosis patients].

An original combination of specific immunotherapy and radon baths designed and tried by the author can produce a 7-7.5-fold decrease in the course duration. Local and systemic reactions occur less frequently while the response rises 1.5-2-fold. The effect was achieved by means of immunological mechanisms of phagocytic activation and rising titers of blocking antibodies.

[Current status of bath water treatment techniques].

The Federal German DIN standard No. 19644 that has been enforced in West Germany since 1989 had to be revised in view of the fact that German legislation is expected to issue an ordinance on swimming pool and public bath water within the framework of the Federal Communicable Diseases Act; furthermore, the need for revision also arose from the solution of the hygienic problems of treatment and disinfection of warm whirlpool water, and from the necessity of modifying several now outdated regulations. It is the aim of public health legislation to prevent health risks of bathers and of attendant staff by Legionella pneumophila in all types of basins with additional water cycles and intake of air (aerosol formation); likewise, adverse health effects of side reaction products of the disinfectant chlorine (i. e. chloroamines and halogenated organic compounds, especially the trihalomethanes) must be avoided. Recent research has shown that these aims can be achieved by altering the mode of running and backwashing filters of all process combinations including those using ozone and introducing an additional absorption on powdered activated carbon, and the process combination of flocculation-filtration-chlorination. Improved treatment would be without effect if turnover rates could not be assessed reliably for basins of irregular geometry--as they are preferably used today--operated with additional water cycles involving intake of air. Lack of costly investigations prompts users to estimate turnover rates on the basis of experience collected with basins of square or rectangular dimensions.

[Status epilepticus induced by prolonged immersion in hot herb bath: report of one case].

A 6-year-old girl with cerebral palsy developed conscious disturbance and generalized convulsion after one-hour hot herb drug bath. Physical examination on admission revealed rectal temperature 41 degrees C, hot skin, respiration 46/min, regular heart beat 98/min, BP 130/60 mmHg, Glascow coma scale 4 (E2M1V1), soft and flat abdomen, no hepatosplenomegaly, no skin rash, no focal neurological sign, increased generalized muscle ton. Laboratory data showed CBC: WBC 20400 cumm (Neutrophils 31%, Lymphocytes 69%), Hb 11.6gm%, ESR 11 mm/hr, arterial blood gas: PH 7.077, PO2 43mmHg, PCO2 57.1mmHg, HCO3- 16 mEq/L, BE-11.5mEq/L, serum sodium 143 mEq./L, potassium 5.2 mEq/L, chloride 101 mEq/L, free calcium ion 3.8mg%, GOT 63IU/L, GPT 263 IU/L, amylase 193 IU/L, alkaline phosphatase 388 IU/L, LDH 1245 IU/L, CPK 677 IU/L, total bilirubin 0.8 mg/dl, direct type 0.1 mg/dl, BUN 18 mg/dl, Glucose 35 mg/dl. Urinalysis revealed proteinuria( ) trace hematuria and pyuria, but no cast. Lumbar puncture is within normal limits. Bacteriology including blood and CSF are normal. Multiple organ failure was noted at that time. Intensive cooling methods were performed including central and peripheral cooling. We used luminal and valium to control the seizure. Condition didn't improve. Afterwards cardiopulmonary arrest developed. Patient expired 8 hours after admission despite of resuscitation. Heat stroke in infancy and childhood is different from that in adulthood. The predisposing factors are high ambient temperature, dehydration, very young baby, sweat gland dysfunction, or ectodermal dysplasia. Definition of heat stroke includes 1) rectal temperature above 41 degrees C, 2) behavioral change, 3) warm skin, wet or dry.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Occurrence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus in marine and estuarine bathing areas in Danish coast.

From seventeen sites in three marine and two estuarine bathing areas at the Danish coast water samples were collected during the period from May to November 1979. Total bacterial counts were performed on blood agar. The prevalence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus in 100 ml water samples using the filter membrane technique and TCBS agar plates was investigated with the possible correlation to water temperature and salinity. Only five strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated, two from marine and three from estuarine water. V. alginolyticus was isolated in 8.33 and 15.63 per cent, in relation to the total bacterial count/100 ml on TCBS agar, in marine and estuarine water samples, respectively. The maximum was registered in June and July, corresponding with the highest temperatures recorded (12-18 degrees C). V. alginolyticus should be considered a widely distributed bacterium in Danish coastal areas and could be regarded as a bacterial indicator of hygienic and public health importance.

[Critical evaluation of phytothermotherapy ("hay baths") in degenerative arthropathies].

It is a traditional practice of the Alpine region of Trentino and Alto Adige to use phytothermotherapeutic treatment with fermenting grass ("hay baths") for chronic degenerative arthropathies. A marked lack of clinical validation is however to be found in current literature as to its efficacy and tolerability. To verify these two aspects 27 patients (mean age 59 +/- 8.7 years, range 43-82) with osteoarthritis (15 of them with a generalized form) were evaluated before and after a ten-day treatment with immersion of the whole body in a bed made with fermenting grass according to the traditional method. The following clinical features were considered: pain in affected joints evaluated by visual analog scale, presence of global subjective improvement (or lack of it) immediately and 6 months after treatment, degree of global functional impairment, stiffness duration, handgrip strength. The mean score at the affected joints (on the visual analog pain scale) was 2.51 +/- 0.71 before and 1.83 +/- 0.89 after treatment (p < 0.001), with improvement in 68% of patients. Morning stiffness was reduced from 38.9 +/- 30.5 to 17.5 +/- 17.2 minutes (p < 0.05), with improvement in 57% of patients. Grip strength measure went from 136 +/- 59.7 to 147 +/- 51 mmHg (p < 0.01), with improvement in 77% of patients. Forty-eight percent of the patients were reassigned to better class of functional capacity (p < 0.001). Patient general assessment signaled improvement in 72% of cases immediately after treatment, and in 80% after six months. Tolerability was high in 23 out of 25 patients, nobody was taken off treatment because of side effects, in two cases a one day interval due to asthenia was introduced. In conclusion, improvement rates were found higher when compared with controlled trials on efficacy of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Noteworthy is also the persistence of improvement 6 months after treatment compared to the above mentioned drugs and usual physiokinesitherapeutic treatments.

[The use of dry-ice baths in treating diabetic patients with micro- and macroangiopathies].

Dry effervescent baths were tried in combined treatment of insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Positive effects were found: a decrease in hyperglycemia, glucosuria, some parameters of lipid metabolism, an increase in muscular performance, myocardial reserve, efficacy of cardiac activity. These responses as well as improvement in peripheral circulation, microcirculation and blood rheology were registered in both types of diabetes.

[The effect of radon baths at the Khmel'nik health resort on the central hemodynamic indices and calcium-regulating hormones in patients with essential hypertension].

A total of 132 patients with stage I, II, essential hypertension were examined. Indices for central hemodynamics were determined as were the levels of parathormone, calcitonin, and ionized calcium. Radon baths in eukinetic and hypokinetic types of circulation caused a significant reduction in mean hemodynamic pressure and resulted in improvement of patency of arterioles. In so far as hyperkinetic type of hemodynamics is concerned, there was a significant reduction in cardiac index and an increase in specific peripheral resistance. The level of ionized calcium got increased in all the patients, the same being true of the levels of parathormone and calcitonin in cases of eukinetic and hyperkinetic types of circulation.

Coping with conflicting agendas: the bathing experience of cognitively impaired older adults.

The behaviors of 33 clients with cognitive impairment were examined during bath time using grounded theory methods. Analysis revealed that 73% of the adults displayed agitated behaviors during personal hygiene care. Subjects and caregivers were faced with conflicting agendas and attempted to cope by using a variety of verbal and nonverbal strategies. The strategies used by cognitively impaired older adults included: attaining control, sharing control, resigning control, and regaining inner control. Results of this study suggest that older adults with cognitive impairment have a repertoire of coping mechanisms that are used when environmental demands challenge the person's deteriorating cortical abilities.

[The use of sinusoidal modulated currents and iodobromine baths in treating patients with the "stone pathway" of the upper urinary tract].

After exposure to sinusoidal modulated currents and iodinebromine baths there was a decrease in serum levels of calcium, alanin aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase and urinary calcium, oxalates, leukocytes, red cells, acceleration of radiopharmaceutical accumulation (Tmax) and elimination from the kidneys (T1/2), urolith fragments (1-5 mm in size) elimination from the upper urinary tract in 21 (48.9%) out of 43 patients. The above physiotherapeutic complex is indicated for urolithiasis patients with associated diseases (hyperesthesia, causalgia).
