"A determining factor in the demographic and employment dynamics of rural communes and certain small towns [in France] is how far they are from the nearest large town. Demographic dynamics and employment trends are somewhat adverse for those living far from urban influences. The main reasons for this would appear to be the slump in agriculture. This said, demographic and employment trends are much improved nearer the large towns, especially since the towns exerting the influence have more inhabitants." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER AND SPA)

"This paper is a concise introductory account of the Italian urban settlement system. It takes up and develops basic topics and characteristic aspects of the 'components' of the system, ie the communes,... the relationships linking these components, as well as the organization and evolution of the system." The author discusses commune attributes, including size, urban function, location, division of labor, and demographic behavior. Consideration is then given to the relationships among communes such as population exchange and communication flows. The data are from a variety of published sources and deal primarily with the 1970s.

"This research analyzes quantitatively the track of individual chain-type migration of many residents to determine how they move in response to changes in their lives, i.e., whether there is spatial regularity on the chain patterns of intra-urban migration. The study area for this research is the industrial city of Yokkaichi, Japan. The study helps us to understand the state of intra-urban migration at the non-aggregate level for all residents during a 15-year period. Special attention is given to the age at which a resident relocates, and to the interval between two successive movements, i.e., the stationary period."

The author examines recent demographic trends concerning the Jewish population of the former USSR, with consideration given to both internal and international migration. "Among the factors whose effects on population dynamics are examined, emphasis is placed on the Jewish population's concentration in large urban areas, the effects of emigration on age structure of the remaining population, self-identification as a method in census enumeration, ethnic intermarriage and family characteristics, and the outlook and prospects for emigres in Israel and the United States." The effect of Soviet state policy on Jewish population dynamics is also considered.

"This paper outlines some of the methodological and conceptual issues associated with the estimation of Aboriginal population change in the rapidly growing town of Katherine, in the Northern Territory [of Australia], and reports on selected social and economic impacts of recent in-migration. Attention is drawn to the inappropriateness of de facto population figures as a basis for planning and the need to estimate service requirements in the context of high population mobility."
