Severe aplastic anemia associated with thymic carcinoma and partial recovery of hematopoiesis after thymectomy.

Aplastic anemia has been a rare complication of thymic tumors documented in only a few cases. We now report that a previously healthy, 72-year-old woman had a well-differentiated squamous cell thymic carcinoma and severe aplastic anemia, as detected on a simultaneous basis. After extirpation of the thymic carcinoma, hematological recovery was achieved. While cyclosporine (CyA), prednisolone (PSL), and methenolone improved hematological data even more, a partial and stable remission has been sustained for 22 months. The patient's serum prior to the surgery had a suppressive effect on the formation of colonies of erythroid and nonerythroid colonies, as determined using the patient's bone marrow cells and compared with the patient's serum after the surgery and normal AB serum. This case report concerns a patient in whom we observed simultaneous occurrence of a thymic tumor and a sever marrow aplasia for which we describe our therapeutic approach.

Effects of bursectomy and thymectomy on the development of resistance to Cryptosporidium baileyi in chickens.

Comparisons were made between the course of infection with Cryptosporidium baileyi in normal chickens and in chickens with functional deficiencies in either B-lymphocytes (bursectomized) or T-lymphocytes (thymectomized). Bursectomy did not influence the acquired immune response to C. baileyi infection as measured by the oocyst excretion. However, the total oocyst output of bursectomized birds was less than a quarter of that of the controls due to the reduced site for multiplication of the parasite. The total oocyst output of thymectomized chickens was more than 2 times higher and the patency was 2 times longer as compared with control animals. Moreover, thymectomized birds failed to acquire resistance to the challenge infection. These findings attest to the primary role of cell-mediated immunity in the expression of resistance to C. baileyi as opposed to the antibody-mediated mechanisms.

Interaction of Helicobacter pylori-induced follicular gastritis and autoimmune gastritis in BALB/c mice with post-thymectomy autoimmune gastritis.

BACKGROUND: There is still controversy about the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and autoimmune gastritis. The aim of this study was to clarify whether or not H. pylori infection interacts with the development of autoimmune gastritis. METHODS: Neonatally thymectomized BALB/c mice with autoimmune gastritis received orally administered H. pylori and were examined histologically and serologically. The T-helper (Th)1/Th2 immune balance in the microenvironment of the stomach was evaluated by reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for interferon (IFN)-gamma and interleukin (IL)-4. RESULTS: Uninfected mice showed disappearance of parietal cells, and upregulation of IFN-Gamma, but no germinal center formation. The infected neonatally thymectomized mice showed follicular gastritis, preserved parietal cells, decreased serum anti-parietal antibodies, and upregulation of IL-4 and IFN-gamma. CONCLUSIONS: H. pylori infection changes the microenvironment of the gastric mucosa by inducing a Th2 immune response in addition to a Th1 response, and regresses autoimmune gastritis in neonatally thymectomized BALB/c mice.
