[Computer aided recording and analysis of dental dates of children from the aggregate list (printed form 2008)].

The authors represent a further program-system for computer aided data processing of the results from the systematic dental examinations in children. The data input starts with the summarized dates of each class fixed in the sumlist (printed form 2008). This program needs less computer capacity and considers the limited availability of personal computers in dentistry for children.

Visualization of time-dependent inactivation of human tumor cathepsin B isozymes by a peptidyl fluoromethyl ketone using a fluorescent print technique.

A peptidyl fluoromethyl ketone (Z-Phe-Ala CH2F) was found to be an effective compound in a time dependent inactivation of cathepsin B isozymes from a number of tissues including human tumors. The effect was visualized by employing an activity-specific fluorescent print technique preceded by isoelectric focusing. The technique could yield additional information of selective inhibition of isozymes as observed with rat pancreas. The fluoromethyl ketone is 30-fold more potent than the known inhibitor of cathepsin B, Z-Phe-AlaCHN2 in parallel evaluation. Furthermore, the fluoromethyl ketone may have in vivo potential in the inhibition of cathepsin B, in view of the results of toxicological studies. The findings demonstrate that the application of enzyme-directed overlay membranes, impregnated with specific substrates, following isoelectric focusing could be very useful in the study of proteases and their involvement in the oncogenic process.

The crisis facing printed medical literature. Acid paper.

Medicine strives to preserve the achievements of the past for the benefit of future clinicians and scientists. However, the paper on which medical journals are printed is steadily and irreversibly decaying. Since the late 1800s, most medical journals have been published on paper prepared with acids. In recent years, publishers, authors, and archivists have become aware of the destructive effects of acid decay on medical journals. Though the cause of deterioration is well understood, the choice of a remedy is still controversial. Remedies include acid-free paper, computerization, deacidification, and microfilm. These techniques are reviewed for their reliability, comprehensiveness, and cost-effectiveness. Microfilm is recommended above other techniques as the most immediately promising solution. The authors propose that publishers be required by law to submit archival quality microfilm as a condition for copyright protection.

Contact dermatitis to photographic print coating liquid.

A case of allergic contact dermititis secondary to photographic print coating liquid is described herein. Patch test reactions to the mixture were positive, but negative to the individual components which included dimethylhydantoin formaldehyde resin, the logical allergen. Formaldehyde resin allergic dermatitis, in some instances, may not be reproduced by patch testing because of various contributing factors. In this patient, the combination of components was necessary to yield a sensitivity reaction. To the best of our knowledge contact dermatitis secondary to this product has not been previously reported.

[Physical work capacity of electronics workers (the assembling and checking of printed circuit boards)].

The physical capacity for work of electronic workers that assembly and check up the printed was determined. The physical capacity for work of the female assembly-workers is assessed to be moderate and that of the operators-very good. A reduction of the maximum oxygen consumption with 0.375 ml/kg per year was established in the female assembly-workers, in the age group 21-40. The results obtained are discussed in connection with the unfavourable effect of the reduced motor activity during work, taken as base for the elaboration of measures for the improvement of the physical capacity for work.

[Electronic data processing-compatible documentation in neurology--developmental stage of neurologic findings for a specialty-specific scientific evaluation system and print-out of a computer assisted epicrisis].

A computer compatible neurological examination record has been drawn up for a neurological documentation called "ADOK Neurologie" as part of a scheme for the basic registration of patient-related information from all patients receiving ward treatment at the Medical Academy Dresden and the County Neurological and Psychiatric Hospital Arnsdorf. The examination questionnaire consists of dichotomous questions and permits up to 1,525 separate items of neurological information per patient to be stored and processed. The information permits purposeful scientific analysis and computer print-out of the epicrisis. The article reports on the structure of the questionnaire, the prospects and limits of the method and experience gained during many years of practical use.

Dusting and lifting the bite print: a new technique.

Utilizing the powder and brush method employed in lifting fingerprints, one of the authors was able to lift tooth prints on the body surface of both living and dead victims. The advantages of ease, speed, and greater accuracy of detail render the procedure useful to the forensic odontologist, the medical examiner, and the on-scene evidence technician.

Automated purchasing: Forecasts to determine stock levels and print orders.

An automated purchasing system to optimize inventory levels of frozen foods, including meat items, while minimizing stock outages, was developed and implemented. Menu item forecast data were coordinated with on-hand quantities to automate the calculation of order quantities and printing purchase requisitions. The model selected also incorporated: (a) Safety stock level, (b) accumulated forecasts, and (c) accumulated orders already placed. The project was smoothly integrated into an on-going computer-assisted management system. All programs functioned as planned; computer documents were complete and accurate. The system design was retained for use in the foodservice operation.

Printed drug information sources used by pharmacists in southeastern Michigan.

A survey to determine the type and number of printed resources used by community and hospital pharmacists in southeastern Michigan was made between June and September 1978. A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 445 pharmacists from 77 hospitals and 296 community pharmacies. A total of 259 pharmacists (58.1%) representing 215 pharmacies (58.0%) responded. The results indicate that hospital pharmacists are likely to have more drug information resources to them than do community pharmacists. All pharmacists surveyed tended to use a narrow group of textbooks despite the variety of books available to them. The textbook most commonly used by both groups of pharmacists was Facts and Comparisons.

Interdependence of form and function in cognitive systems explains perception of printed words.

Perception is described within a complex systems framework that includes several constructs: resonance, attractors, subsymbols, and design principles. This framework was anticipated in J. J. Gibson's ecological approach (M. T. Turvey & C. Carello, 1981), but it is extended to cognitive phenomena by assuming experiential realism instead of ecological realism. The framework is applied in this article to explain phonologic mediation in reading and a complex array of published naming and lexical decision data. The full account requires only two design principles: covariant learning and self-consistency. Nonetheless, it organizes and explains a vast empirical literature on printed word perception.

Frequency of the three STR loci (TPOX, CSF1PO, THo1), in a Japanese population determined using a Gene Print STR multiplex kit.

Allele and genotype frequencies for three tetrametric short tandem repeat loci (TPOX, CSF1PO and TH01) were determined in a Japanese population sample (n = 105) by means of the Gene Print STR Multiplex system PCR kit, electrophoresis of the PCR products in denaturing gels and detection of allelic fragments by silver staining. Six alleles each were found for the TPOX, CSF1PO, and TH01 loci and at the TPOX locus, we identified an additional mutation allele, which consisted of 7 AATG repeats. The TPOX, CSF1PO and TH01 loci were apparently 64, 73, and 74% heterozygous, respectively. All loci met the Hardy-Weinberg criteria using categorized alleles.

Cultural sensitivity and readability of breast and prostate printed cancer education materials targeting African Americans.

Cancer prevention materials such as pamphlets, booklets, and fact sheets play a significant role in reducing cancer disparities. Little is documented in the literature about the cultural sensitivity of materials targeting African Americans. The Cancer Prevention Materials and African Americans project was conducted to assess the cultural sensitivity and readability of printed cancer education materials targeting African Americans. Results showed current breast and cancer materials are not written at appropriate reading levels, and only 54% of the breast and 40% of the prostate cancer materials were found to be culturally sensitive. Even though the materials are being developed and disseminated in health fairs, physician offices, barber shops, and other locations, the materials are still not reflective of the African-American populations and do not consider literacy, visual, written messages, and format as factors in their utilization. Future studies should assess the appropriateness of materials for African Americans to promote and prevent cancer in African Americans.

Portable chest radiography: comparison of high-resolution digital displays with laser printed digital film.

Computed radiology is a radiographic imaging technology that generates a conventional radiographic image in digital form. The image can be recorded on a laser sensitive film or archived to a digital storage device and displayed on a video monitor. This study was performed to evaluate the adequacy of reporting digitised images directly from the workstation. The test set consisted of portable chest images of 55 patients from the cardiothoracic intensive care unit. Normal structures and nine abnormalities were pre-selected for analysis. The radiographs and images on the video display were reviewed on two separate occasions, six months apart by two independent readers. No clinical details were supplied and the intraobserver and interobserver agreement were assessed using Kappa statistics. The overall results indicated that direct reporting from the workstation was as reliable as reporting from the laser printed copies.
