Hyperlipidemia in patients with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a bacterial infection, which has been classified as a local chronic inflammation. This, as well as cardiovascular disease, may share common risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, behavioral factors, aging, and male gender. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hyperlipidemia and periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The levels of plasma lipids in 40 subjects with periodontitis (CPITN score III or IV, pocket depth 4 mm) with mean age 32.3 +/-1.2 years were measured and compared with those obtained from 40 age and sex matched controls. Both groups were systemically healthy according to their medical history. RESULTS: Total cholesterol (CHL) and triglycerides (TG) were significantly higher in the case group (P=0.045 and P=0.016, respectively). HDL and LDL cholesterols were higher in patients but did not have any significant differences with controls. The frequency of persons with pathologic values of TG and CHL were significantly higher in cases compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: These results showed hyperlipidemia may be associated with periodontitis in healthy people. However, it is unclear whether periodontitis causes an increase in levels of serum lipids or hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for both periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.

[Epidemiology of cancer of the prostate. Descriptive study].

Although the most frequent tumor of the male genitourinary system is cancer of the prostate, epidemiological studies on this tumor are uncommon in our setting. This study attempts to record the number of patients who were diagnosed as having prostatic cancer at La Paz Hospital (Madrid) during 1981-1987 and to determine the influence of pathological antecedents--personal and familial--in the development of the disease. The present study showed 90 patients had been diagnosed during this period. Most of the patients diagnosed as having this condition were aged 70-79 years. Most of the patients (85.6%) were living in urban areas. Only 2.2% were unmarried and without children. The mean patient age on diagnosis was lower in the group with a higher educational level. A previous history of benign hyperplasia of the prostate was present in 22.22%; tonsillectomy had been performed in 11.11%; only 5.55% had a previous history of rheumatic fever; 26.66% were obese; and 36.66% had a family history of cancer. A previous history of disease did not influence mean patient age at the time of diagnosis.

[Methodology in studying laterality in developmental neuropsychiatry].

The extent of literature and research dedicated to the laterality of cerebral functions and it's relation towards peripheral laterality gives the impression that this problem is precisely determined to a greater extent. The fact that can be accepted by the examination of literature is that the relation behavior (in the sense of acting)--brain (in the sense of a material determination of behavior itself) cannot be accepted as precisely determined or according to definition, not by nature nor by the mechanism of establishing this relation. From the perspective of the clinical viewpoint of the meaning of left-handedness the most acceptable is the theory of Satz Orsini and Sopper from 1986 in which they consider that non-righthanded people present a heterogenous group with a few individual sub-types: pathological lefthanded persons; ambivalent persons, in other words, ambidexters and the group of lefthanded persons by nature. On the basis of present neuropsychological research and in accordance with the psycho-neuro-vegetative approach to the semiotics of the developmental age of Popov et al., a complete battery is given which enables the neuropsychological analysis according to Orzbut's principals.

[Echographic evaluation of abscess pathology in superficial soft tissue. Personal experience].

Sonography is currently considered a very useful technique for the study of inflammatory-abscess conditions in superficial soft tissues. The authors report their experience with US in the study of 22 patients. In 15 of them a comparison was made with X-ray findings, in 4 with fistulographic and in 2 with CT results. US allows the abscesses to be evaluated in both their morphological structure and anatomical topography. US has proven especially useful in correctly evaluating both complete and incomplete fistulas, as well as in revealing foreign bodies. The US pattern of an abscess often confirms clinical diagnosis for it supplies further and more accurate information. Moreover, US sometimes allows an abscess to be demonstrated even when the latter was missed at clinics. However, the differential diagnosis with malignant neoplasm is difficult and sometimes a decision can be made only by means of other diagnostic imaging modalities.

[Holter diagnosis of the cardiac biorhythm in young persons].

The cardiac biorhythm was studied in 30 young persons 17-28 years of age. Holter's technique for a 24 hour ECG recording was used. In 15 persons the arterial pressure was recorded simultaneously. Supraventricular and ventricular extrasystoles were found and in one person preventricular tachycardia during sleep was recorded. Bradycardia of 34. min-1 was recorded in one person and bradycardia below 40. min-1 during sleep without accompanying rhythm and conduction disturbances was recorded in 30% of the examined persons. No pathologic variations of the arterial pressure were found. An attempt is made to find out correlations between the ECG changes and the activity of the sympathetic/parasympathetic system.

Determination of anti-elastin peptide antibodies in normal and arteriosclerotic human sera by ELISA.

We adapted a highly sensitive and reproducible ELISA technique for the determination of anti-elastin peptide antibodies of IgG type AEAb-IgG) and IgM type AEAb-IgM) in human sera. The determination was performed in the sera of 265 normal and diseased persons. The pathologies studied included obliterative arteriosclerosis of the legs, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, type IIb and IV hyperlipoproteinemia and hypertension. No clearcut correlation could be found between AEAb and age. In contrast, in arteriosclerotic patients and especially in obliterative arteriosclerosis of the legs and ischemic heart disease, the concentration of AEAb-IgG was significantly increased. The AEAb-IgM showed no change in the studied diseases. Both types of AEAb were decreased in type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. Anti-elastin antibodies may be involved in the pathomechanisms of the above diseases and the determination of antibody concentrations may be of some help in obliterative arteriosclerotic diseases.

[Ultrasonic study of the bile ducts in patients after cholecystectomy].

Ultrasonic examination (USE) of the bile tract was conducted in 287 patients with removed gallbladder. The choleretic test based on comparative appraisal of the lumen of the bile ducts before and after medication with pharmacological agents stimulating bile secretion was performed in 167 cases to increase the USE efficacy. USE allowed choledocholithiasis to be diagnosed in 24 of 30 patients and obstruction of the bile ducts in 60 of 67 patients. The sensitivity of USE in pneumobilia detection was appraised highly. Preference was given to radiological methods of examination of patients with external biliary fistulae and drains in the common biliary duct in comparison with USE. The authors believe USE to be the optimal means for primary diagnosis of biliary pathology in persons with removed gallbladder, which can be undertaken in out-patient conditions and which reduces the need for conducting invasive radio-endoscopic examination (endoscopic retrograde cholangiography) in such patients.

[Alkali neutralization and alkali resistance in persons with healthy skin and in eczema patients].

Alkali resistance (AR) and alkali neutralisation (AN) time, according to Tronnier and Bussius, were measured at three month intervals on 77 people with healthy skin and compared with test results from 205 patients with occupational dermatitis for whom expert opinion had been given once or several times. It was established that AN and AR react independently of one another. No significant difference was noted in either of the groups with reference to sex, age, occupation and skin type, nor in the ill patients with reference to the duration of the dermatitis, reduction in earning capacity, sensitivity or state of illness at the time opinion was given. Both AN and AR changed usually in the course of occupational dermatitis, however not parallel to one another, nor in relation to the respective skin condition. An and AR results from the dermatitis patients are significantly worse than those from persons with healthy skin tested as comparison. 35% of the healthy persons had pathological AR. In spite of considerable variations in AN in individuals, a satisfactory reproduction of the test results was obtained both for the AN and AR in repeated investigations.
