When is a move a migration?

"This paper extends the traditional theory of urban location to derive a consistent model of inter- and intra-regional mobility. It demonstrates that the two are behaviorally distinct. Workplace and residence relocations tend to be 'substitutes' in intra-regional mobility but are 'complements' in inter-regional mobility. Previous empirical papers have neglected the theoretical foundations of intra-regional mobility. In consequence, they have made four types of analytical compromises: defined 'migration' as any change in residence location, used job changes as proxies for workplace mobility, neglected commuting distances, and used estimation techniques that do not reveal the underlying behavior."

Migration under uncertainty about quality of locations.

"This paper develops a search-theoretic framework for analyzing migration decisions of workers who can only observe the quality of a location by migrating to the location after accepting a job there. After learning the location quality, the worker can stay at the current job, search locally at the same location, or search for a job at another location (leading to repeat migration). This paper develops the properties of optimal search, migration, and repeat migration decisions, and finds how revealed location quality influences the tradeoffs between local search and repeat migration. The effects of search costs and better job opportunities on the reservation levels of wages and revealed quality levels are also determined."

Labour migration and policy formation in a newly industrialized country: a case study of illegal Thai workers in Singapore.

"Towards the end of 1988, the Singapore Government began to express concern about over-reliance of the economy on foreign workers and later about the presence of large numbers of illegal workers. This article examines the policies and legislation introduced to change these situations, and examines in detail the repatriation of 10,000 unauthorized Thai immigrants. In addition to economic policy and practice, the social and political aspects of migration and labour utilization are considered, as are the implications for international relations."

Migration in a segmented labour market.

"Current research in migration is moving on from neo-classical and behavioural perspectives to a more structural approach relating to wider processes, issues of power and the particular role of employers. Within this programme a key issue for investigation is the interaction between spatial mobility and the structuring of labour markets. This paper focuses on the significance of labour market segmentation--in terms both of job stability and gender--for migration, both theoretically and through an empirical analysis of data from the UK Labour Force Survey on sponsored and unsponsored moves."

Migration trends and regional labour market change in Poland.

The author examines internal migration and its relation to economic conditions in Poland during the period since World War II. The "basic facets of internal migration in Poland, as they prevailed over the last decades, will be summarized in Section 2 and [compared] with the most recent mobility trends. Section 3 will focus on migration flows within and among 49 regions over the 1975-1983 period while taking account of changing industrial employment levels in individual regions. Alternative interpretations of observed migration patterns will be sought in Section 4. Preliminary conclusions and some further questions will be listed in Section 5."

Interregional migration and interindustry labour mobility in Canada: a simultaneous approach.

"This paper argues that interindustry labour mobility and interregional migration are simultaneously determined processes. It estimates a bivariate probit model of migration and mobility [using data for Canada] and concludes that the interindustry mobility of labour is dominated by the availability of employment hours, and that wage differentials are a statistically significant, but small, determinant of interregional migration.... Since interindustry mobility is much larger in magnitude than interregional migration, quantity constraints in labour markets are of central importance to the adaptive capacity of the economy." The emergence of migration theory and a suggested new direction.

"The literature on internal labour migration is surveyed using a four-fold taxonomic scheme. The potential migrant, as presented in the existing literature, can be viewed as a supplier of labour, an investor in human capital and a consumer of regional amenities such as public goods. The paper develops a fourth approach which treats the household, rather than the individual, as the migrating unit and which views the potential migrant as a producer of home produced commodities. The continuities as well as the contrasts between the four approaches are discussed in the paper."
