The thoughts and expectations of faculty leaving the traditional classroom for online teaching are explored. This article discusses teaching strategies and technological advances and how these are affected by changing philosophical viewpoints about nursing and education. Basic issues involving technology and education focus on a variety of issues including the ability of the learner to grow existentially.
This report reviews the effects of decreased utilization of autopsy (less than 15% in 1985) on medical education and research, quality assurance programs, insurance claims processing, and cost containment. Recommendations to promote change include the innovative integration of postmortem examinations with new technology for education and research and the promotion of standards of accreditation of programs that include autopsy for graduate and undergraduate medical education. The use of autopsy to assess technological methods of diagnosis seems to be a reasonable expectation. Methods of reimbursement to validate autopsy as a medical act should be sought, and voluntary and government regulation to assure the role of autopsy in quality assurance programs is suggested.
Technology is changing rapidly and health care is just beinnng to see the wave of technological advances. Computer-assisted educational software is available for many topics and in many media. Educators and learners need to explore these media and determine how they can best fit into a total learning experience. Computers should be used to enhance education and training, rather than replace the human instructor. The latest software and hardware are interesting to learners, but technology needs to be weighed along with outcomes of education. Over the next 10 years, many of the materials we use today for critical care education will be replaced with more advanced technologies. Subject matter experts should work with computer experts to design and improve computer-assisted technology. In addition, all educators should assess the return on investment of these newer technologies before embracing them.

This paper provides an overview of global trends in e-Learning and opportunities opened by harnessing learning technologies at the service of the Israeli higher education. The introduction of innovative learning technologies is examined in light of an organizational change. A series of substantial issues should be taken into account to successfully manage the change. Among these are: rethinking of academic learning and instruction, redefining the role of the teachers and the students, decoupling the learning materials and the learning process, new approaches to student assessment and program evaluation, and instituting a well thought out organizational plan including a support center. The above-mentioned issues guided the introduction of a recent call for project proposals for the integration of technologies into Israeli higher education. The main principles, criteria and results of this call are described.
