Long-term trends in transference and resistance: a report on a quantitative-analytic method applied to four psychoanalyses.

Quantitative ratings of transference and resistance were made at each session during four psychoanalyses. Ratings were then compared with the treating psychoanalysts' clinical impressions. The two relatively successful analyses showed rising transference and diminishing resistance. The two relatively less successful analyses showed more parallel curves: the long, difficult analysis showed closely associated transference and resistance curves; the failure in analysis revealed a high resistance curve, even while transference increased.

Psychoanalysis and general psychiatry: obsessive-compulsive disorder as paradigm.

To certain areas once dominated by psychoanalytic conceptualizations of psychopathology and pathogenesis, general psychiatry has in recent years made significant contributions. The obsessive-compulsive disorder is cited as an example, and illustrations of such contributions are described and discussed. Some implications for psychoanalytic theory and research are suggested.

Recovering a repressed memory, and representational shift in an adolescent.

This case report focuses on the disappearance of a fixed pictorial iconic representation and transformation to symbolic (word) representation following the recovery of a repressed memory in a twelve-and-a-half-year-old after the first eleven months of psychoanalysis. There is a substantial body of psychoanalytic literature on the importance of language, naming or articulation of experiences associated with transformation of psychic structure (Fenichel, 1941; Glover, 1955; Kris, 1956a, 1956b; Werner and Kaplan, 1963; Schafer, 1976, 1978a, 1978b, 1980; Shapiro, 1979; Spence, 1982; Stern, 1989) and a relatively autonomous literature on the communicative representational power of children's play or visual portrayals (Piaget, 1962; A. Freud, 1947; Klein, 1964; Axeline, 1947; Esman, 1983; Neubauer et al., 1987; Krall, 1989). To our knowledge, there is no report of the structural effect of the recovery of a repressed traumatic experience, in this case, with subsequent parental confirmation of the traumatic event.

Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder in a sample of Iranian patients.

BACKGROUND: Characteristic features of the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occur with remarkable consistency in different cultural settings. The content of symptoms, however, seems to vary across cultures. AIMS: To examine the content of symptoms in a sample of OCD patients from Iran. METHODS: In a sample of 135 patients recruited from three treatment settings the prevalence of symptoms with different contents were ranked and compared across genders. RESULTS: Doubts and indecisiveness were the most common obsessions and washing the most common compulsion for the whole sample. Fears of impurity and contamination, obsessive thoughts about self-impurity and washing compulsions were more common in women, whereas blasphemous thoughts and orderliness compulsions were more common in men. CONCLUSIONS: With minor differences, the pattern of symptoms with various contents in this sample was similar to that in Western settings.

Associating Embedded Figures Test Performance with extreme hysteria and psychasthenia MMPI scores in a psychiatric population.

21 female subjects from a psychiatric population scoring high on one of two MMPI scales, Hysteria or Psychasthenia, were given Jackson's (1956) shortened version of the Embedded Figures Test. Hysteria correlates positively and significantly .71 with time spent in detecting embedded geometric figures. Obsessive-compulsiveness and Embedded Figures Test performance time are negatively correlated -.63. The average times were 102.5 sec. for hysteria subjects and 62.6 sec. for psychasthenia subjects. Chi-squared establishes the significant association of MMPI measurements for hysteria and obsessive-compulsiveness with field-dependence and field-independence, respectively.

Assessment and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder in children.

Childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder was believed to be very rare and, until quite recently, little effort was directed toward assessment or treatment. Today, typical assessment procedures include clinical and structured interviews, self-report and therapist or staff completed inventories, self-monitoring, and direct observation. No single method has demonstrated superiority, and each has had limitations. Multiple measures are therefore recommended. The treatment literature is composed largely of uncontrolled case studies presenting combinations of three or more treatments. Although all treatment-outcome reports illustrate positive effects, no one method has been superior treating either a single facet of the disorder or the disorder in its entirety.
