An acoustic holding environment: from the analysis of a 'transitional character'.

The significance of the sounds of human voices is often blurred by our customary emphasis on the visual representations of objects and part-objects in the reconstruction in analysis of patients' unconscious fantasies. A case has been presented highlighting an individual's sensitivity to the noises of his early holding environment, and his use of them for perpetuating his early attachments, as well as in substituting for his stunted phallic development. The case is offered in support of the contention that our instruments of reproducing and transmitting human sounds often become auxiliaries in mediating the problem of separation: as such, they also become internalized influences in character formation. The clinical type described is seen as representative of a genre of people whose early transitional development has directed their choices toward certain life roles that are inordinately stamped with the imprint of illusion. Many of them receive a legitimization from the outer society (like the child's transitional object receives confirmation from its mother), thereby justifying their being classified as having 'transitional characters'. In this broad category, one could list entrepreneurs and actors from business and entertainment, including impresarios and magicians, mimes and comedians. The fields of politics and religion, philosophy and psychology, are by no means exempt from attracting individuals of this order.

Influence of certain stimulation parameters on the character of the cortical self-sustained after-discharge.

The ECoG pattern of self-sustained after-discharges (SSADs) evoked by rhythmic electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex is far from uniform. In acute experiments on male rats the authors studied the significance of the frequency, intensity and length of stimulation for the character of the resultant SSAD. In the first group (11 rats), a stimulation frequency of 8 Hz was used; the stimulation series, which lasted 10 and 20 s, always led to the formation of a SSAD composed of spike-and-wave rhythm right from the outset. Shortening the time of stimulation markedly reduced its effectiveness. In the second group (10 animals), stimulation with 50 Hz frequency often evoked a complex SSAD starting with desynchronization, which was followed by fast spike activity of increasing amplitude and only later by spike-and-wave rhythm or by polyspike-and-wave rhythm. Towards the end, serrated waves--i.e. graphoelements typical of SSADs evoked by electrical stimulation of limbic structures--often appeared in the SSAD. A higher stimulation intensity increased the incidence of this complex SSAD. In this group a minimum duration of stimulation was also essential (series of less than 2 s were not reliably effective). When this second type of SSAD ended, depression of ECoG activity was followed in 27% of the cases by a spontaneous recurrent seizure (RS). The ECoG character of these RS can be very variable. The two types of seizures evoked by slow and fast stimulation differ from each other not only in respect of their ECoG pattern (where the difference is probably due to more pronounced propagation to subcortical structures after faster stimulation), but also as regards the presumed mechanism of their onset.

Separation of Anopheles merus from freshwater Anopheles gambiae by salinity tolerance test and morphological characters.

The separation methods for Anopheles merus from freshwater A. gambiae s.l. involving the use of salinity tolerance test, sensilla coeloconica, palpal ratio and palpal bands were evaluated for a period of one year on a total of about 340 mosquitoes. The salinity tolerance test method was found to be quite simple and reliable but unsuitable in disease transmission studies due to an interval of 2-3 days between the collection and dissection periods and also due to the fact that only a fraction of the mosquito sample is generally identified by this method. Although significantly higher proportions of sensilla coeloconica and palpal ratio were observed in A. merus as compared to freshwater A. gambiae s.l. these characters were found quite unreliable due to their overlapping between two mosquito groups. Sensilla coeloconica and palpal ratio used separately could separate respective percentages of 11.4 and 11.8 A. merus from freshwater A. gambiae s.l., while in combination they separated up to 40.9%. Percentages 4-banded palp mosquitoes accounted for about 32% in A. merus and 19% in freshwater A. gambiae s.l. All these characters also displayed some seasonal variations in the two mosquito groups.

[Role of the degree and character of identical parental loading as a factor in the clinical polymorphism of epilepsy].

A comparative clinico-constitutional analysis of 73 cases of epilepsy with an identical parental loading and 179 without it, demonstrated that the degree and character of a parental loading is one of the genotypical factors determining the fenotypical polymorphism of epilepsy. This circumstances causes the frequency of associations with dysgenesia, epileptoid traits, modifying the age of manifestation and progression of the disease. This should also be taken into consideration in prognosticating the severity of epilepsy during treatment and socio-labor adaptation in patients depending upon the degree and character of identical parental loading.

[The spectral characters of pulsed Doppler in fetal arrhythmia].

Blood flow spectra of left ventricular inflow and outflow of the fetus were measured by pulsed Doppler echocardiography in 82 cases who were diagnosed as fetal arrhythmia clinically. By analysing the order of atrio- ventricular excitation, the spectral characters and the relationship of time- phase, the classification of fetal arrhythmia was confirmed. Among the 82 cases, there were 17 cases of sinus bradycardia, 16 cases of sinus tachycardia, 28 cases of atrial premature beats, 16 cases of ventricular premature beats, 3 cases of II degrees atrioventricular conduction block, 2 cases of atrial fibrillation. These common spectral characters of fetal arrhythmia were confirmed by the examination of neonatal Doppler echocardiography and ECG. This study indicated that this method could be used as one of the diagnostic methods for fetal arrhythmia.

[Study on the psychological character of pregnant women and nursing applications].

This study was conducted to explore the psychological character of healthy pregnant women. 81 four to ten months pregnant and 96 non pregnant women participated the study. SCL-90 was used to measure the psychological health state. The result showed that the average total and subtotal scores such as compulsion, sensitivity, stress, hostility, terror, obstinate, and psychiatric factor in pregnant women were obvious higher than in non pregnant women (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). It indicated that pregnant women's psychological health state was not good. The major influencing factor was unhealthy characteristic type. It recommends that nurses should give advice and care to the pregnant women according to the individual's unhealthy psychological character to benefit both the mother and baby.

[Plasmid determined lactose positive character in (Enterobacter hafniae) and (Proteus morganii) (author's transl)].

The atypical lactose positive characters have been found to be plasmidmediated in 6 strains of Enterobacter hafniae and 2 strains of Proteus morganii. One of the P. morganii plasmid possesses the fi+ character, all the other plasmids belonging to the fi-group. Both plasmids of P. morganii could be transduced and remained then readily transferably by conjugation. Two of the E. hafniae plasmids were found unstable when harboured in Salmonella typhi grown at 40 degrees centigrade, when they were stable in the same strain grown at 37 degrees. The other plasmids were stable in the original strains, in S. typhi, in Escherichia coli both at 37 degrees and 40 degrees. These results are discussed according to investigation about (lactose plasmids) of which a bibliographic review is presented here.

[Genetic analysis of a polygenic system for a quantitative character after negative and positive selection. II. Chromosome contributions to the expression of the radial vein fragments].

Hybridological genetic analysis of a polygenic system of the character radius incompletus in Drosophila was conducted by intercrossing the contrasting selection lines riSN and riSP and crossing them with the tester line y bw st ri. Two vein segments were shown to have different polygenic systems which control penetrance and expressivity of the character. Determination of the proximal segment was additive with regard to the contribution of the haploid genomes in the hybrid zygote and to the contribution of different chromosomes. The contributions of individual chromosomes of the riSN line compared to those of the tester line were equal to -0.97 (1), -0.31 (2), and -0.14 (3). The contributions of the chromosomes of the riSP line were 0.26 (1), 0.095 (2), and 0.31 (3). Determination of the distal segment was nonadditive in all respects. Specifically, in the hybrid zygotes of riSN and the tester line, the absence of the distal segment was completely dominant over its presence; for that, only one riSN chromosome was necessary. Both intergenomic and interchromosome contributions were nonadditive. The results are discussed with regard to penetrance, expressivity and morphological mechanisms of the longitudinal wing vein formation in Drosophila.

[Demonstration of the dorsal character of the body wall of the aneurogenic regenerate of Nereis pelagica L. (Annelida, Polychaeta)].

In Nereis pelagica, graft of dorsal or ventral parts of a regenerate edified in the absence of nerve cord (=aneurogenic) on the ventral or dorsal face of a normal host demonstrates a completely dorsal nature of the body wall in these special regenerates. The results indicate that the nerve cord is involved in setting up regenerate dorso-ventral polarity by fixing differentiation of the ventral characters in the area located near by; without it , only the dorsal character is expressed.

Metric characters of the hard palate and their cephalometric correlations in Namibian !Kung San and Kenyan tribes.

The metric characters of the head and hard palate of 138 black males from Kenya and 110 male !Kung San from Namibia have for the first time been compared to describe the black and Khoisan variation with respect to these special trait systems. The palate measurements were taken from prints of self-hardening plastic. Nearly all metric characters show significant differences between the two populations, which are reflected in a relevant discriminant function. The analyses of correlations between the individual head and palate measurements yield different correlation patterns in the two samples also with regard to their significance and direction. These results and the generally low correlation coefficients can be explained by the complex processes of allometric head growth, resulting in the Sans' pedomorphous and the blacks' more adultiform head and palate trait combinations.

The effect of cations on the thermophilic character of alkaline phosphatase from Thermoactinomyces vulgaris.

The effect of cations on the thermophilic character of alkaline phosphatase from Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, is described. The optimal pH and temperature were 9.5 and 55 degrees C to 65 degrees C, respectively. The partial removal of cations with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid converted the enzyme to mesophilic and susceptible to chemical denaturation. Their complete removal caused complete inhibition. The addition of 0.3mM cobalt and 10mM magnesium added before heating were found to be optimal for restoring its thermophilic character and its stability to a chemical denaturant.

[Character of organ volume vessels during pressor reflexes].

In acute experiments on cats, responses of the resistance and capacity vessels of small intestine, spleen, kidneys, and m. gastrocnemius were studied during pressor sinocarotid reflex and electrical stimulation of the sciatic and brachial afferents. It was shown that, against the background of constrictory responses of the resistance vessels in these organs, both the constrictory and the dilatory responses of the capicitance vessels could occur or not. Correlation analysis revealed no dependence between the markedness and character of the capacitance vessel responses and the changes of the venous blood oxygenation during pressor reflexes. The regulatory mechanisms determining, different characters of the capacitance vessels during neurogenic effects and the methodical conditions revealing the true nature of changes occurring in the postcapillary bed, are discussed.

[Clinical implication of tumor marker expressions suggesting biological characters of malignancies].

One of the potential utilities of tumor markers is to recognize the biological characters of malignancies. These biological characters include cell lineage, cell differentiation, cell growth activity, metastatic risk, drug sensitivity or precancerous involvements. So it is very important for the clinical management of cancer patients to detect such tumor marker expressions. The major aim of this brief overview has been to provide an update on the such tumor markers. Expression of some phenotype markers recognized by monoclonal antibodies against cancer cells suggests cell lineage or cell differentiation. Neuroendocrine property can be diagnosed by tumor markers such as GRP, 1-DDC, NSE or CR-BB. Cancer cell nuclear DNA patterns are highly associated with cell growth activity. Expression of E-selectin suggests high risk of cancer metastasis. Detection of MDR protein or GST-pi is correlated with anticancer drug resistance. Precancerous involvement such as atrophic gastritis can been screened by the serum pepsinogen level. These tumor markers were discussed on the basis of our research or literatures.

A multivariate analysis of morphometric characters of Heterorhabditis species (Nemata: Heterorhabditidae) and the role of morphometrics in the taxonomy of species of the genus.

A multivariate analysis on the morphometrics of 7 Heterorhabditis species was conducted to review the status of the traditional morphometric characterization methods for differentiating species of these nematodes. Results from this study showed consistency in the selection of morphometric characters for discriminating among males and infective juveniles of Heterorhabditis species. For the males, testis reflexion (TREF) and total length (LENGTH) were the variables that contributed most in the discrimination among the different species, and for the infective juveniles, tail length (TAILL) and total length (LENGTH) were the variables that contributed most. Therefore, we consider that these morphometric characters are useful and reliable, and that they should be used for the identification of Heterorhabditis species/isolates.

Intraspecific variation in key morphological characters of Culiseta melanura (Diptera:Culicidae).

Culiseta melanura (Coq.), the enzootic vector of eastern equine encephalitis in North America, is polymorphic for a trait used as a key diagnostic character. The absence of white abdominal bands distinguishes this species in several prominent keys to North American mosquitoes. However, this is an environmentally induced, nongenetic trait that cannot be used as a key character for diagnosing Cs. melanura. In light trap collections, banded specimens occur in early spring and summer, and nonbanded adults appear in late summer-autumn. Larvae reared in laboratory conditions produce nonbanded adults. Progeny reared from banded mothers are uniformly nonbanded. Biochemical genetic results indicate that banding is not correlated with a distinctive genotype or presence of cryptic species. In 18 enzyme loci screened, neither diagnostic alleles nor large differences in allele frequencies were detected between field-collected representatives of the two forms. Genetic variability was relatively low in the 28-year-old laboratory colony (average heterozygosity = 7%; average number of alleles per locus = 1.4), whereas in field samples, the variability was typical of field populations (average heterozygosity = 12-19%; average number of alleles per locus = 1.6-1.8), with the presence of both polymorphic and private alleles. The population genetic profile and comparisons among geographically distinct populations represent the first such presentation for any species in the genus Culiseta.

Symptoms and character traits in patients selected for long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In this naturalistic study of 55 outpatients selected for long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, two Swedish assessment instruments are presented (the Karolinska Psychodynamic Profile and the Karolinska Scales of Personality), and the significance of psychodynamic criteria for the selection of patients is discussed. Thirty patients (55%) fulfilled criteria for a DSM-III-R diagnosis. The most prominent psychodynamically defined character pathology was found in the areas of coping with aggressive affects; dependency and separation; frustration tolerance; and impulse control. Some psychodynamically defined character traits, particularly poor frustration tolerance, were related to symptomatic suffering.

The effect of a video character's smoking status on young females' perceptions of social characteristics.

Despite public warnings of the health risks associated with cigarette smoking, as well as advertising bans and educational programs in schools, the percentage of young females who smoke is on the rise. This study examined the effect of a video character's smoking status on young females' perceptions of social characteristics. University students were shown a video of a young woman in a socially oriented role-play. The video portrayed a smoker for the experimental group and a nonsmoker for the control group; in all other respects the video presentations were identical. Both groups answered a questionnaire pertaining to social characteristics they believed she possessed. The experimental group rated the character as more outgoing, more sophisticated, not as easy to manipulate, and less emotional about breaking up with her boyfriend than did the control group. There were no significant differences in ratings of her uncertainty in a crowd, her degree of unpopularity, her ability to be intimidated, the degree others admire her, and her attractiveness. The results are discussed in the light of previous studies, and implications for future research are explored.
