[Miracidial attraction by Biomphalaria tenagophila genetically selected for susceptibility].

The attraction of Schistosoma mansoni miracidea by snails genetically selected for susceptibility to infection is considered. Miracidea were exposed to snails or to snail conditioned water in a specially devised three-chamber glass apparatus. Ten miracidea were used for each test and were deposited in the middle chamber (a passage); after 15 minutes, them in each of the number of the three chambers were recorded. In one of the chambers, chosen randomly at each trial, either snails or SCW were used. The snails and the SCW were chosen from either selected snails (highly susceptible) or unselected. The miracidea were of two groups: they came either from susceptible snails in previous generation or were of unselected traits. The results show that only snail generation has importance for the attraction: selected molluscs of susceptible traits do attract the miracidea more.

[The distribution of Biomphalaria (Gastropoda, Planorbidae) in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, Brazil].

An analysis to determine new localities colonized by the intermediate snail hosts (B. straminea, B. tenagophila and B. tenagophila tenagophila) of Schistosoma mansoni from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States (Brazil) was carried out. As regards the geographical distribution of the schistosomiasis vector, the possible extension of the endemic disease to Southernmost Brazil is commented on.

[The effect of hemolymph inoculation on the mechanism of defense of Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835)].

The resistance of B. tenagophila snails to infection by Schistosoma mansoni was studied. These snails had been previously inoculated with hemolymph talsen from other snails infected by S. mansoni of SJ strain or by other trematodes. The findings suggest that two types--cellular and humoral--are responsible for the resistance to infection by S. mansoni. The cellular response occurred when the snails were inoculated with hemolymph from snails infected by S. mansoni, B. tenagophila inoculate with hemolymph from snails infected by furcocercariae without eye-spot, also showed resistance to the infection by S. mansoni. In this latter case, the degenerated sporocysts were not enveloped by amebocitary reaction, leading to the conclusion that humoral factors could be involved.
