A microcomputer-based data acquisition system for ECG, body and ambient temperatures measurement during bathing.

A data acquisition system employing a low power 8 bit microcomputer has been developed for heart rate variability monitoring before, during and after bathing. The system consists of three integral chest electrodes, two temperature sensors, an instrumentation amplifier, a low power 8-bit single chip microcomputer (SMC) and a 4 MB compact flash memory (CFM). The ECG from the electrodes is converted to an 8-bit digital format at a 1 ms rate by an A/D converter in the SMC. Both signals from the body and ambient temperature sensors are converted to an 8-bit digital format every 1 second. These data are stored by the CFM. The system is powered by a rechargeable 3.6 V lithium battery. The 4 x 11 x 1 cm system is encapsulated in epoxy and silicone, yielding a total volume of 44 cc. The weight is 100 g.

[Spectral analysis of the variability of heart rhythm in the analysis of changes in the autonomic regulation during treatment of hypertension with sodium chloride baths].

Changes in spectral parameters of heart rate variability were assessed in patients with mild and moderate hypertension (n = 48) and healthy subjects (n = 34) taking sodium chloride bath and in active orthostatic test before and after balneotherapy. Significant changes were not registered. The course of balneotherapy stimulated sympathetic or parasympathetic activity (relative enhancement occurred in 67, absolute in 15% versus 8 and 10% patients, respectively).

The use of prolonged baths in psychiatric care: understanding through fiction.

Two autobiographical novels containing descriptions of prolonged baths from the patient's perspective are referred to and analysed. They include depictions of patients who are treated roughly. Staff do not interact verbally with the patients, who attempt to discern the intentions and moods of the staff through their body language. The depictions from the patient's perspective are discussed in relation to nurses' narratives with the use of medico-historical references and psychological literature.

[Effect of general carbon dioxide baths and physical exercise on parameters of 24-hour monitoring of EKG and cardiac rhythm variability in postmyocardial infarction patients].

Myocardial infarction survivors took general carbon dioxide baths and/or did therapeutic exercises. Compared to controls, all these patients experienced a significantly less number and duration of episodes of ST-segment ischemic depressions detected at 24-h ECG monitoring while significant differences by cardiac rhythm variability before and after the treatment were not registered though the test group showed the trend to normalization of the heart rhythm.

[The risk associated with bathing activities and problems in its prevention through the use of bacterial indicators of fecal contamination].

There are many elements and factors that intervene to affect the quality of the coastal areas as all and none of them, taken individually, seems fundamental in defining the characteristics and to determine in a coherent way the risk associated to its use. Despite evident successes in the protection of public health, the present approach to the regulation of bathing water quality suffers several limitations. Difficulties in risk assessment due to the use of indicators of faecal contamination as parameters stated by law are discussed.

[Electromagnetic fields of extremely high frequency and radon baths in the treatment of Lyme disease with nervous system lesions].

Patients with borreliosis caused by exodic tick infestation running with affection of the nervous system were exposed to scanning EHF-therapy (59-63 GHz) on biologically active zones of the upper third of the chest, right brachial joint, biologically active points GI4, E36. Also, they took radon baths. The treatment was planned with consideration of the principles of chronotherapy. This therapeutic approach produced stimulation of general adaptive reactions and reparative processes in the peripheral nervous system.

[Reflexotherapy and carbon dioxide baths in the complex treatment of patients with circulatory encephalopathy of arteriosclerotic etiology].

Overall 106 patients with atherosclerotic cccccccirculatory encephalopathy (DE) were examined for changes in the EEG, REG and in certain psychological parameters (attention, memory, "associative" thinking) before and after acupuncture and carbon dioxide baths. In patients with stage I and stage II DE (in 93 and 80%, respectively), the clinical improvement was accompanied by positive changes such as a rise of alpha-activity, decrease of pathological waves and frequencies on the EEG, decline of the vascular tone and improvement of the blood content on the REG in addition to the shortening of the time required for the search for numbers according to Schulte's tables, a decrease of errors made during calculation, an increase of words and the family of words in the memorization and "associative" thinking tests. The data obtained may attest to the amelioration of cerebral function and hemodynamics because of the rehabilitation treatment.

[A low-frequency alternating magnetic field and its combination with radon baths in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis].

Children suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) (n-132) were exposed to low-frequency variable magnetic field. Therapeutic response registered consisted of analgetic and anti-inflammatory effects most pronounced in 14-19 mT regimen. The addition of radon baths to the above exposure resulted in higher effectiveness of the treatment due to involvement of pathogenetic JRA mechanisms.

Outbreak of Escherichia coli O157 associated with a busy bathing beach.

Between 7 and 20 August 1999 a Public Health Department was notified of seven cases of Escherichia coli O157 infection. Phage typing demonstrated that four were related and three unrelated. The investigation centred around the three cases of E. coli O157 phage type 21/28 who visited the same beach during the last week of July. The fourth related infection was identified as a result of the investigation. Although the investigation failed to identify a source of infection, interviews with the families of the four related cases suggested that they had occupied the same part of the beach on the same day and so it is possible that a contaminated area of beach was the source. We believe this to be the first outbreak of E. coli O157 to be associated with a bathing beach.

[Using four-chambers carbon dioxide bath and graduated therapeutic walking in rehabilitation of patients with myocardial ischemia and implanted pacemaker].

The article contributes to the treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease and implanted pacemaker it is based on complex application of 4-chambers carbonic acid gas baths and graduated therapeutic walking. 126 patients were observed and new approaches in the treatment were established. The proposed complex rehabilitation program was found to positively influence over the systolic and diastolic function of left ventricle, induce heartreparative process, and decrease left ventricular hypertrophy on average by 10-12%, reliably increase the efficiency of cardiopulmonary system, enhance physical activity tolerance and coronary reserve, increase physical activity power on average by 25% and decrease pathological hyperactivity.

[Effects of carbon dioxide baths and exercise on physical performance of patients with left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction].

Carbon dioxide baths (CDB) and exercise have a good effect on clinical indices of the postinfarction period in patients suffering from postinfarction cardiosclerosis with impaired left ventricular function, especially in combined use. Patients on general CDB and/or exercise exhibited a significant increase in time of exercise and power of the threshold load, less frequent occurrence of ischemic depression of ST segment and dyspnea in performing bicycle exercise. CDB and exercise are especially beneficial for patients with systolic dysfunction.

[Cannabinoid hyperemesis with the unusual symptom of compulsive bathing].

Examination of a 36-year-old man revealed no physical or psychological disorders that could explain his chronic, intermittent severe vomiting that did not respond to a wide range of antiemetics. After a recent publication on cannabinoid hyperemesis, the patient was questioned further, and it was found that he was a chronic cannabis smoker since the age of 14 years. This is the first Dutch patient with cannabinoid hyperemesis. The syndrome is characterised by a prodromal phase, during which the patient suffers from nausea several days a week, particularly in the morning. Thereafter, the severity of symptoms increases and the patient can present with recurring episodes of treatment-resistant nausea, continuous vomiting, and colicky abdominal pain. Due to the severity of the vomiting, patients are frequently hospitalised for the treatment of dehydration. A typical sign ofcannabinoid hyperemesis is compulsive bathing in warm water, which is the only way to suppress the symptoms. The mechanism underlying the syndrome has not been clarified, but it is clear that chronic cannabis use is a key factor: discontinuation causes the symptoms to disappear immediately, whereas recommencing the use of cannabis can lead to the recurrence of cyclic vomiting and nausea within a few weeks or months.

[The use of apiotherapy and radon baths in treating syringomyelia].

In Vologda Province, syringomyelia is rather prevalent (2.9 per 100,000 population). In view of the fact that the clinical symptoms are refractory to the treatment methods applied (roentgenotherapy and radioactive iodine), the combined use of apiotherapy (honey bee and flower pollen) and radon baths was attempted. It turned out to be undoubtedly effective.

[Pathogenic properties of free-living amoebae isolated from natural and man-made bathing sites in the province of Western Pomerania].

INTRODUCTION: Pathogenic amoebae belonging to the genus of Acanthamoeba and Naegleria, as well as species such as Balamuthia mandrillaris and Sappinia diploidea cause harmful, life-threatening infections in humans and animals. These amoebae commonly occur in the natural environment. Free-living, pathogenic amoebae have hitherto been detected in water reservoirs near Poznań, Gdańsk, and Lublin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present work focused on the occurrence of thermophilic amoebae potentially pathogenic to humans. Natural and man-made bathing sites in the province of Western Pomerania were studied. A total of 299 water samples were collected between 2001 and 2003 from 86 sites (indoor swimming pools, seasonal pools, physiotherapy pool, fountains, lakes, ponds, rivers, lagoons, and coastal waters of the Baltic Sea). Amoebae were isolated at 37 degrees C from 223 samples, of which 34 (15.2%) demonstrated thermophilic properties. Tests using thermophilic isolates were carried out on mice through intranasal inoculation. Pathogenic properties and intensity of infection were determined on the basis of re-isolation of amoebae from agar substrates inoculated with fragments of internal organs. Organs of infected mice were examined histologically. RESULTS: Six isolates exhibited infective properties in mice. Five of them were obtained from two man-made water reservoirs belonging to the recreational complex of the city of Szczecin (AM 17, AM 148, AD 16, AD 148, AD 166). One isolate was from a natural reservoir (JG 172). Amoebae were isolated from the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, and heart of the infected animals.

[Updated assessment of efficacy of dry air radon baths of different concentrations at the stage of medical rehabilitation of patients with bronchial asthma].

We studied effects of dry air radon baths (DARB) on bronchial hypersensitivity and serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines in patients with bronchial asthma (BA) with reference to the disease severity and radon therapy regimen. DARB with radon concentrations 40 nCi/l significantly raise the threshold of bronchial sensitivity to metacholine compared to control and DARB with radon concentration 20 nCi/l. The effect was the highest in patients with mild asthma. Comparison of serum levels of alpha- and gamma-interferons, tumor necrosis factor alpha, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-6 has shown that alpha radon radiation significantly increases serum gamma-interferon and reduces IL-4 concentration. These changes were more evident in the group with high radon content. Thus, radon therapy has immunomodulating activity.
