[The medico-legal evaluation of disability in tuberculosis].

The problem of invalidity statement comes out when disease causes a quantitatively and quantitatively verifiable irreversible alteration in the state of a subject in its functional aspects. That is, we must verify if and of what the pulmonary tubercular reliquates induced a reduced peripheral oxygen availability. For this reason, the damage valuation can't leave out of consideration of the at rest and under stress analysis of respiratory function. About invalidity judgement in subjects already affected by tuberculosis, we must repeat that there are some contraindications in heavy, mostly dusty, works doing, particularly when a pneumoconiosis combines with tuberculosis. At last, Author mentions the tables in force, indicating the civil invalidity valuation. At the present time, these tables are based on respiratory function damage.

[New medical guidelines for fitness specifications for automobile driving (Tauvo K)--neurology/psychiatry specialty].

New medical guidelines for assessing the fitness of drivers came into force in the GDR on 1 June 1982. The aims and conception of the thorough revision this entailed are stated in respect of neurology and psychiatry. Dynamic fitness tests are characterized by an objective, unbiased individual prognosis that takes medical treatment, the side effects of drugs and both the psychological and physical ability to compensate for shortcomings into account. This leads to the differentiated assessment of the individual and permits the assessment "fit with reservations". Some of the 11 points contained in the neuropsychiatric part of the new guidelines are discussed briefly.

[Analysis of medical decision-making in pregnancy (author's transl)].

A study was conducted into 451 pregnant women who made use of Act No. 242 (GDR) in various phases of their pregnancy. Age, existence or absence of children, occupation, and shift work were obviously of no statistically significant effect on the time at which women decided to take advantage of the legal provision on sheltered jobs. It is expected, however, that some of the characteristics, such as nature of occupation, shift work and even more the number of children, will assume significance with numerically larger random samples. The dates at which pregnant women are assigned to easier jobs were found to depend with considerable significance on the medical doctor in charge, the department or area of employment, and the type of work. These findings can be interpreted as consequence of several factors, the medical officer's knowledge of specific working conditions to which his patients are exposed and objectively differentiated physical workloads. More information will be required on specific shop-floor conditions.

[Work incapacity in protracted illness--1: Continuation of employment].

The definition of "disablement" of an employee is discussed in detail, first of all from the legal viewpoint of labour legislation in respect of the claim to continuing payment of wages, and secondly from the viewpoint of German compulsory sickness insurance in respect of sickness compensation. The rule of thumb says that the demands made on the employee in respect of performance in connection with the job he had when he fell ill, govern the concept of disablement. If the individual continues to be employed, these demands are decisive and crucial, an exception being if the employee can be transferred to another job in the same plant.
