[Possible rickettsial etiology of Buerger's disease].

We have established a serologic study with method of direct microagglutination described by Babudieri and Zardi, by 31 patients affected from a Buerger's disease, to determine the positivity of antibody title which desposes on rickettsiosis infection. Positivities have been confirmed for the Rickettsia Burnetii from 41,9% of cases, for R. Mooseri from 6,4% and for the R. Conori only from one case. Since the positivity varies in the normal population from the 0.7% to 1.1% the data related appears very significant for a possible rickettsiosis etiology of the Buerger's disease.

[An indirect solid-phase immunoenzyme method in diagnosing rickettsial infections].

Sera of Brill-Zinsser disease patients (70 samples) Q fever patients (12 samples) and healthy persons from Q fever enzootic areas (99 samples) were studied in indirect solid phase enzyme immunoassay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFA) and indirect passive hemahglutination test. ELISA and IFA have been proved as most sensitive tests for detection of rickettsial antibodies in both clinical and retrospective diagnosis of Rickettsial diseases.

Tick-borne diseases in transfusion medicine.

Ticks are effective vectors of viral, bacterial, rickettsial and parasitic diseases. Many of the tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are of significance to transfusion medicine, either because of the risks they pose to the blood supply or the necessity for blood products required in their treatment. The transmission of tick-borne pathogens via blood transfusion is of global concern. However, among transfusion medicine practitioners, experience with most of these microorganisms is limited. Transfusion transmission of TBDs has been documented largely by means of single case reports. A better understanding of the epidemiology, biology and management of this group of diseases is necessary in order to assess the risks they pose to the blood supply and to help guide effective prevention strategies to reduce this risk. Unique methods are required to focus on donor selection, predonation questioning, mass screening and inactivation or eradication procedures. The role of the transfusion medicine service in their treatment also needs to be better defined. This article reviews the growing body of literature pertaining to this emerging field of transfusion medicine and offers some recommendations for transfusionists in dealing with TBDs.

Controversies in neurological infectious diseases.

The past several years have seen major advances in our understanding of neurological infectious diseases, their diagnosis, and their treatment. Along with these advances, however, new information about infectious agents and new therapeutic options have also introduced both uncertainty and controversy in the approach and management of patients with diseases of the central nervous system. Here, we discuss six such areas: the long-term efficacy of HAART therapy in treatment of HIV infection; the role of viral infection in chronic fatigue syndrome; Rasmussen's encephalitis as an infectious or autoimmune disease; the spectrum of neurological diseases caused by rickettsial infection; the role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in human central nervous system disease; and the possible association of Chlamydia pneumoniae and human herpesvirus 6 with multiple sclerosis.
