A poly(HEMA) sponge for restoration of articular cartilage defects.

The properties of poly(HEMA) sponges have been studied after implantation in the weight-bearing articular surfaces of young and adult rabbit knees. Only sponges with small pores (less than 50 micrometer) were able to withstand weight-bearing. After 12 weeks, the implants were overgrown by cartilaginous or fibrocartilaginous tissue, and the ingrowth of chondroid tissue into the sponges was observed.

Radiopaque solidifying liquids for releasable balloon technique: a technical note.

Recently we have reported a catheter having a balloon which can be released simply by twisting the catheter. In the technique, 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) has been used as a solidifying liquid to prevent the released balloon from deflating. Since HEMA is not radiopaque, the place and the size of the balloon cannot be visualized under an X-ray image intensifier. The present investigation involves the preparation of a radiopaque, solidifying liquid, by mixing HEMA with a suitable contrast medium such as metrizamide, sodium iothalamate or meglumine sodium iodamide. The use of HEMA-contrast medium mixtures made injection of the solidifying liquids much more controllable.

Collagen and fibronectin immobilization on PHEMA microcarriers for hepatocyte attachment.

Polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMA) microcarriers in a size range of 150-250 microns were prepared by a suspension polymerization in an aqueous phase containing magnesium oxide. The hydroxyl groups on the PHEMA microcarriers were activated by cyanogen bromide. In order to improve cell attachment, cell-adhesive proteins, namely, collagen and fibronectin were immobilized onto PHEMA microcarriers. The nonspecific adsorption values for collagen and fibronectin were 0.10 mg collagen/g PHEMA and 0.044 mg fibronectin/g PHEMA, respectively. Collagen and fibronectin immobilization on PHEMA microcarriers were studied at different pH by using single protein solutions containing different amounts of proteins, at a constant temperature of 20 degrees C. The maximum immobilizations were 0.85 mg collagen/g PHEMA (at pH: 9.5) and 0.52 mg fibronectin/g PHEMA (at pH: 7.4). Hepatocyte attachment onto these biologically modified PHEMA microcarriers was studied. Hydrophilic PHEMA microcarriers did not support cell attachment. High hepatocyte attachment yields (up to 75% surface coverage) were observed on collagen and fibronectin immobilized PHEMA microcarriers.

Ridge augmentation for immediate postextraction implants: eight year retrospective study.

Implant placement immediately after tooth extraction has become a well accepted treatment modality. It is used to replace either a single tooth or several teeth in an edentulous ridge. Various augmentation materials are used to build up the edentulous ridge, to maintain it, and to prevent resorption upon extraction. The learning objective of this paper is to present an 8-year retrospective study of 55 screw-type implant placement in 40 patients, using an alloplast (mixed with autogenous blood) as the augmentation material. The paper reviews the progress of implant technology and describes the method and materials used in this particular study. Four cases are used to illustrate the simultaneous implantation and ridge augmentation procedure.

Replacement therapy.

HTR Synthetic Bone's user friendly properties include: Hydrophilicity: holds clot and prevents its breakdown. Negative electric charge: adheres to bone and implant. Doesn't seem to get infected: less than one percent. Can graft to its surface: antibiotics or bone growth proteins for a slow timely release into adjacent areas. Does not require a barrier membrane with its use. Regenerating bone adheres to and is in direct contact with the HTR material. Has ability to attract the immature mesenchymal cell of the marrow that differentiate to osteoblasts: it is more than filler. Results in regeneration of bone three to four times as dense as bone regenerated by a barrier membrane/or as found in most normal dental alveolus.

[Miragel in surgery of retinal detachment].

The authors presented results of the surgical treatment of 33 patients with retinal detachment, in whom Miragel implants were used for scleral buckling. The studies have confirmed that Miragel is a very good material for retinal detachment surgery and its application on a larger scale is recommended.

Chemical sorbents: official guidelines and experimental approach.

To evaluate the biocompatibility of an anionic exchange resin with active group trimethylammonium and charged with chloride ions an experimental study was performed with different tests to determine cytocompatibility, acute systemic toxicity, intracutaneous reactivity, allergic sensibilization, haemocompatibility and release of acetone, dichloromethane, quaternary amines and heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd) in eluate. Thus an anionic exchange resin can link all anionic substances; an ex vivo study on the participation of the dissociated sodic heparin in the anionic exchange was also conducted. In fact every time an extracorporeal circuit is made an anticoagulant must be administered to the patient and the removal of the drug could cause serious haemocoagulative problems. The results of the study showed a high biocompatibility of the resin that did not cause different significant reactions in comparison with negative control substances. The coating of the resin with poly-hydroxy-ethyl methacrilate with a separation phase technique avoided heparin removal from blood. Therefore adjustment of the dosage may not be necessary during further in vivo experiments. Future researches aiming to evaluate the the effectiveness and the biocompatibility of the sorbent in a living being will be performed in the next steps of the study.

A unique method of combining teeth and endosseous implants for a stable removable prosthesis.

This report documents a unique use of osseointegrated implants for preservation of a patient's remaining dentition after the loss of many teeth and presents the following ideas: how to combine natural teeth with endosseous implants by means of commercially available analogues and impression posts used in an indirect technique; how to have retrievability of the implant-connecting bar from the teeth and implants; how to be able to replace natural teeth at any time with endosseous implants should they be lost; how to have provisional restorations that are always fixed during the treatment phase; how to simplify the jaw relationship and prosthetic replacement of missing oral structures; and how to have a stable, removable, easily replaceable and maintainable, prosthesis.
