Medicine as patriarchal religion.

This article demonstrates, by use of specific theological paradigms, how medicine functions as religion. In doing so, medicine promotes anti-feminist beliefs, symbols, social memories, and churchly structures. The essay then examines the enhancement of women's health from a feminist philosophical perspective. It argues against fetishizing in health promotion to the extent that everything comes to be regarded as therapeutic. Medicine has advanced the ideology that life itself is a disease to be cured or, at best, prevented. Alternative ethics of health promotion could revise this tendency of regular medicine to appropriate all of life into the medical domain, advocating that all sorts of simple daily activities are profoundly therapeutic in some way. Rather, health must be viewed as the constant attempt to re-create a female environment that is Self-defined on the boundary of an environment that is man-made.

Historical perspectives on cardiac transplantation: the past as prologue to challenges for the 21st century.

The development of cardiac transplantation is based on experimental studies that started in the beginning of the last century. The improvement in the surgical technique for cardiac transplantation, associated with other progress in the field of cardiac surgery and a better understanding of the immune responses, allowed cardiac transplantation to become a reality for the treatment of endstage heart disease. Recent development in immunosuppressive agents and advances in cardiac surgery have meant that cardiac transplantation is not a "fantastic speculation for the future," but a reality for the present. Thus, cardiac transplantation is performed around the world with an excellent survival rate and has become a lifesaving treatment for many patients with severe heart disease.

The odyssey of Marian the brave: a biopsychosocial fairy tale.

A creative application of a patient's health/illness situation is derived from a patient interview, to illustrate the patterned human responses that represent the phenomena of interest to nursing. The patient's story is described from a biopsychosocial perspective that encompasses the nursing phenomena of health: chronicity; stress and coping; attachment; power and control; hope; uncertainty; and caring. An analysis delineates the opportunity for advanced practitioners to learn from their patient's stories about the lived experience of health, derive a deeper understanding of nursing knowledge, and gain an appreciation for the accuracy of findings in nursing research.
