Filariasis, a parasitic infection endemic in parts of India, Myanmar, islands of the South Pacific, West and East Africa and Saudi Arabia can be diagnosed from various types of cytopathological specimens. This case documents the detection of filarial infection from hydrocele fluid cytology in a 30-year-old Myanmar migrant worker in Malaysia.

A case of a Caucasian girl with leukocytoclastic vasculitis, polyarthritis and eosinophilia is presented. A blood test showed microfilariasis, probably of the Loa Loa type. The epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of filariasis is described. In the western literature revised, reactive arthritis has been described but none of the other clinical features of our case. The presence of circulating immune complex might explain the pathogenic mechanism. We believe that filariae should be included amongst the causes of hypersensitivity vasculitis and in the differential diagnosis of eosinophilic vasculitis.
Dirofilaria immitis (the dog heartworm) microfilarial periodicity was determined hourly for five days in an infected dog from Kambai village in Muheza district Tanzania. Maximal microfilarial counts were found at 1100 h and minimal at 2200 h. This finding represents the first record of D. immitis microfilarial periodicity in Tanzania.

Definite numbers of B. malayi mf were inoculated into An. sinensis and Cx. quinquefasciatus, and their subsequent development was observed. The relationships between the dosage and the L3 positive rate on the one hand and the average filarial maturity rate on the other were defined. At the same dosages of 4 and 10 mf/mosquito, the L3 positive rates and the average filarial maturity rates in An. sinensis were much higher than those in Cx. quinquefasciatus (p less than 0.01). It was demonstrated that the immune response to filariae of the mosquitos was the main factor resulting in these differences. The intensity of the immune response not only varied with the species, but also declined with the aging of mosquitos. The results of our experiment might be useful to studies on the dynamics of filariasis transmission and the interaction between filariae and their insect hosts.
