Ascariasis of the gastrointestinal tract.

The radiographic findings and complications of Ascaris lumbricoides infection of the gastrointestinal tract are presented. Since the clinical symptoms of ascariasis are usually vague or nonspecific, the radiologist may be in a position to play a major role in the proper diagnosis of this disease.

Isolation and properties of mast cells from the small bowel lamina propria of the rat.

A method is described for the isolation of mast cells from the mucosa of the small intestine of rats infected with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. The cells release histamine on challenge with IgE-directed ligands and calcium ionophores but, in contrast to rat peritoneal mast cells, are refractory to the action of basic secretagogues. The mucosal and peritoneal cells also differ markedly in their sensitivity to particular anti-allergic drugs. These results further emphasize the functional heterogeneity of mast cells from different sources.

Importance of gastro-intestinal helminths in calves in Papua New Guinea.

Gastro-intestinal nematodes caused poor growth rates and high mortality in undrenched calves when weaning preceded the wet season. Cooperia punctata and Haemonchus placei were the dominant species throughout the year with worm burdens and pasture contamination being highest during the wet season and lowest in the dry season. Histotropic stages occurred throughout the year in weaner calves but with a clear peak during the wet season. The development of host resistance against the most important worm species generally followed the pattern described by others but a breakdown in resistance against Cooperia occurred amongst some calves during the wet season. The number of H. placei, together with Bunostomum phlebotomum, was sufficiently large in some calves to cause death. It is likely that the even larger burdens of C. punctata observed would have contributed to if not caused death.

Immunoglobulin deficiency diseases of the intestine.

Marshak has emphasized the role of the gastrointestinal tract as a major immunologic organ and described the radiologic findings of immunoglobulin deficiency diseases of the small intestine. According to his classification the radiologic findings include multiple nodular defects, edema and increased secretions associated with Giardiasis, a sprue-like pattern, and thickened folds. In this report, the role of the intestine in the immune response is briefly reviewed and several of the radiologic features of immune deficiency diseases and those of benign nodular lymphoid hyperplasia are illustrated.

Colorectal schistosomiasis. Endoscopic polypectomy.

The role of colonoscopic polypectomy for schistosomal polyps was studied. The results showed that, in spite of the large number of polyps, a total of 404 polyps were removed from 20 patients. The procedure is feasible with minimal complications. A marked reduction of rectal bleeding occurred in half the patients, and the remaining half had minimal symptoms. Colonoscopic polypectomy gives equal results to colonic excision for schistosomal polyps.
