[Human fascioliasis. Humoral clinical picture and anatomohistological aspects of the liver].
Twenty-seven patients with fasciolasis which was diagnosed through biliary drainage indicated in patients with upper digestive symptoms, particularly of the gastroduodenal portion are presented. The great significance of this procedure in the positive diagnosis of this disease is stressed. The clinical and humoral pictures of these patients are analyzed, and emphasis is made on their poorly defined clinical picture as well as on the little effectiveness of the humoral tests and parasitological studies performed on them. The results of liver macro and microscopic studies on a group of these patients are shown, and the fact that only one patient had lesions attributable to parasitic infestation is pointed out.

Trematode infections. Opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, and paragonimiasis.
The parasitic diseases of the liver and lung are caused by trematodes or flukes--Opisthorchis viverrini, O. felineus, Fasciola hepatica, and Paragonimus westermani. Humans get infected by eating the second intermediate host of the fluke, for example, fish, crab, or water plant. The disease runs a chronic course. The diagnosis is made by the recover of eggs in stools or sputum, or by serodiagnosis. Praziquantel is the drug of choice except in falcioliaisis.
[Effectiveness of Nilzan and Dovenix in the treatment of fascioliasis in cattle and sheep].
The authors tested the effectivity of the foreign preparations Nilzan (tetramisole ++ oxyclozanide) and Dovenix (nitroxynil) in the treatment of cattle and sheep naturally invaded by Fasciola hepatica. The effectiveness of the two preparations was evaluated on the basis of the results of coprological examination in the test and control animals prior to treatment and in two intervals after treatment. In slightly invaded cattle (the average egg number in 3 g of faeces in 28 test cows was 1.46 per animal) the last examination (4 weeks after treatment) showed 100-per-cent extenseffectiveness and intenseffectiveness of both preparations. When the test was finished in sheep (average number of eggs in 3 g of faeces in 45 test ewes--5.40 per animal) six weeks after treatment, the EE of Nilzan was 86.7% and IE 97.4%; in Dovenix EE was 93.4% and IE 99.0%. Both preparations were accepted well, without any side-effects or unfavourable phenomena related to their application.

Ovine fascioliasis following reinfection.
Sheep were reinfected with matacercariae once. Half were treated with anthelmintic one week before reinfection. Compared with a primary infection, the reinfecting flukes in most seemed to migrate faster through the liver although in one treated sheep migration seemed to be longer and more destructive. Migrations extended into areas little affected by the primary infection thus producing more widespread fibrosis. Although a temporary retardation in fluke growth rate occurred, there was no reduction in the numbers of flukes recovered. Flukes killed by anthelmintic formed large granulomata.
Efficacy of glutathione for treatment of fascioliasis. An investigation in the experimentally infested rat.
Liver fluke infection (Fasciola hepatica) depresses the drug-metabolizing capacity of the hepatic mixed function oxidase (MFO) and glucuronosyltransferase (GT) enzyme systems, throughout a free radicals mediated lipid peroxidation process. Glutathione (GSH, CAS 70-18-8) administered chronically (100 mg/kg i.p. once daily for 40 days) to experimentally infested rats from the onset to the maximal development of the infection (40th day), greatly reduced the damage to membrane lipids of the liver tissue (primary event of the disease), as judged by malonic dialdehyde (MDA) content (decreased by 80%) and diene conjugation absorption (delta E 1% value falls from 1.94 to 0.67). As a consequence, serum glutamate-oxaloacetate (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate (GPT) transaminases levels, liver GSH and phospholipid (PL) contents, cytochrome P-450, NADPH-cytochrome-P-450 reductase and some typical cytochrome P-450-dependent activities (p-nitroanisole O-demethylase, aniline hydroxylase, as well as UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (GT) activity, all markedly affected in the acute stage of the disease, tend to recover to the control values. The efficacy of GSH in preventing the impairment of the hepatic drug metabolizing capacity was also demonstrated by using as substrate the widely employed flukicidal agent nitroxinil (3-iodo-4-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzonitrile). The in vitro cytochrome P-450-dependent nitroxinil detoxification (reduction to 3-iodo-4-hydroxy-5-aminobenzonitrile), drastically impaired in infested animals (-80%), is markedly restored (3-fold increase) in GSH-treated rats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
